Why would they not believe her? It's a national incident.

...I do not understand your confusion.

No one in Canterlot noticed the sun not coming up? There was no official announcement about Luna's return? No one saw the royal guard scrambling?

Celestia probably was going to prepare a special announcement for Equestria later that day.

Who, besides the bookworm, would link the lack of sun to the antagonist of an old ponies' tale? How would official word reach Canterlot right after the arrival of Princess Celestia and her sister, who just returned from an "extended vacation" weakened and unfamiliar with the present time, and so likely best kept hidden from the common citizens for the time being? Who, in the apparent absence of Princess Celestia, would have the authority to scramble the Guard? And how would four mere citizens have enough pieces to connect Twilight to any of that, when, for all they knew, the bookworm was studying all night long?

Well that it happened and why it hapened are two different things. Ponies in Canterlot woul have noticed and panicked but likely dismissed the ponies saying "Nghtmare Moon Has Returned!!" As having gone crazy from fear.
If a local downtown area was destroyed by a huge storm and someone told you that it was the work of a Thunderbird you'd assume the where nuts and it was a tornado combined with a thunder storm... Untill you saw undeniable physical evidence of a monster bird the size of a elephant that caused gale force winds when it flapped it's wings and spit lighting from it's beak.
If a costal city was destoryed you'd think is was Tsunami before you thought is was Godzilla.

This is good -- it's an interesting take on what could have happened with Twilight's other friends, now that Twilight has learned more about friendship. Though man, what kind of friends are these ponies, if it takes the word of a Princess alicorn to convince them? I suppose that's what Applejack is for... she just says, "ayup, that's the truth, I reckon", and you're good.

Maybe Moon Dancer would be Honesty, in this set. "Mare in the Moon? Oh yeah, I read about that in Predictions and Prophecies. Princess Luna -- oh, right, I read about her in one of Star Swirl's old journals. The two are the same, and she's Celestia's sister? Well, I'll have to check my old notes, but I don't see anything inconsistent about that..."

To be fair to the four, Cadance was the first word they’d heard aside from the bookworm who overthinks everything and might have done a few too many all-nighters. Lyra’s their friend, she’s in Ponyville, and her word would have been just as convincing. They’ll probably get a letter tomorrow, if Equestria’s postal service is any good, explaining some of the things Twilight already told them.
