Sometime after the events of Sonic Generations, Dr Eggman manages to escape the White Void, traveling back to when his two sworn nemesis were born. After throwing them into another dimension, he then took over the planet of Mobius, transforming the harmony between nature and machine to the dominance of his mechanical ways, ruling Mobius with an iron fist, and raises taxes to ridiculous levels. A group called the Freedom Fighters resist his tyrannical deeds, and attempt to take their home back from the 'good' doctor. But in the alternate dimension, the two hedgehogs, Sonic, and Jawsome, must also learn the Magic of Friendship, as well as recovering the 14 Chaos and Sol Emeralds, mystical gems containing near infinite amounts of energy. Collecting these gems also restores their memories and abilities. It's their turn to strike back at Eggman. No matter what.
