Haven't read Journal, but I heard it said that Celestia and Luna were born alicorns. Though last episode seemed to make it non-canon, what with them not knowing of any ponies born as alicorns. And it looks like Twi will have to really convince Faust not to go postal when she is released, telling the princesses back home all about her is going to be necessary, you don't leave ticking time bombs like that to pop up and distract at the worst moment. Figuring out a solution will be paramount as she can't stay there as canned-not-exactly-evil to pop up.
7079909 It really is typical of them go and change the canon on alicorns right after I wrote that chapter. I could have changed it so that they ascended later, (and had a pretty cute idea on how they did so,) but it would ruin the reasoning behind why Platinum abducted them in the first place. Seems they're also writing the alicorn nation that was mentioned in the journal out of existence. Guess I'm just going to have to ignore all that and add it to the list of canon things we don't mention.
Wow... that's pretty ballsy to debase the representation of the show's creator like that. That wasn't a bit of closet agenda there was it?
Were I to make a snap judgement based on my readings as a whole, I would think you a sadist. If I read too deeply into it, there may be a case for sexual sadism disorder, especially after having to read through the torture chapter, or the situations as a whole.
That can't possibly be the case though, but I have to wonder, is all this cruelty and depravity necessary and beneficial to the story or is it just superfluous shock-value to inflate a "Dark" tag and supplementing the "Random" tag. I am at a loss though, as I'm not invested enough in this to properly analyze, but I am curious enough to wonder.
7081310 That's just it. Where I draw the line and where other people draw the line aren't always going to be the same. Those torture chapters as you call them are probably the most graphic description of such a thing I've wrote, or at least I think so, and I don't think I went too in depth as it is. I do try and keep most of the horrible stuff as being implied to have happened, but sometimes just implying it isn't enough. I couldn't really have them rescue Fleur and be like "What happened to you?" "They tortured me and cut my horn off. It sucked." Seems silly when she's one of the main characters.
I could point you to plenty of fics that are far more gratuitous for far lesser reasons other than because someone wanted to torture ponies in fics. Cupcakes was just the tip of the iceberg for stuff like that. The worst one I've found recently is Lesson Applejack, which really didn't need to be on the front page where a person can find it. When I get to the point where there is no reasoning at all behind the less pleasant aspects of what I write, then yes, you might be on to something. At the moment though, I'm not doing anything that hasn't happened in real life on quite shocking scales.
Forgot about your first point. Was kind of torn over that, but went with it in the end because going with a recognisable character, even if not in the show, is going to be more impactful. I realised that it might bother a few people but I wasn't happy going forward with an oc instead, so I stuck with it. Nothing but love for Lauren Faust as I am coincidentally a big fan of her work, and not just pony. Think of her original plan for the show, and imagine Platinum as Hasbro, doing what they want with her world while she watches powerless from the side-lines, and you might have an inkling of what I thought when I first came up with the idea.
7081631 I wouldn't run a parallel with or even suggest comparing this to stories like the one you mentioned and others we could name. Those are most definitely touted as exactly what they are, and their writers are mostly exactly what I expect them to be. You are right, we do draw different lines. I for one wish it was as simple as those of us that have seen it, find a higher distaste and less of a need for it to further a story, but I know a few who would be more then happy to give you good detailed pointers on the smell, the taste of the air, and even joyfully detail the subtleties of splatter patterns.
In terms of the narrative, what purpose does the torture of Fluer, the cruelties of the Earth ponies visited upon the other tribes and non-ponies, etc., serve? Is this allegory to the atrocities committed by the Nazis against the Jews? Is this to creatively bring attention to China's many atrocities that the west largely ignores? Are you making a statement in relation to the Russian invasion of Crimea, the gruesome reality of racism in South Africa, the ISIL's activities in Mosul? Or is it more of "I just wanted some really evil bastards that everybody will hate"?
7081732 More of the latter using examples of the former. Not gonna lie about that as this is a story where none of those countries actually exist so drawing attention to their actions is going to be difficult. This is the part where I fall out with myself though, as I often feel that adding that little bit of extra unpleasantness could be deemed unnecessary, yet I feel the need to remind people that things are bad, otherwise what's the point of trying to triumph over said badness? It's a tough balance to find and I'm not claiming to have found it. Don't know if you've read fallout equestrian, but I think it did a mostly okay job of reminding you how awful their world is through the main characters running into slavers and raiders and such like, while at the same time not being overly gratuitous apart from where it mattered. It definitely worked at reminding you that the heroes were far from saints.
In the end, like so many things it largely comes down to personal opinion.
7081787 And that is fine, I just did not want to think I was missing some big message or important theme here. As with my opinions on Fallout: Equestria, it comes down to personal taste, on that we completely agree.
Oooo time for the a bligatory defend your position chapter.
