I imagine most of Earth would give the ponies a similar reply. Every human culture I know about has meat as a central part of its cuisine, and by extension its culture. (I know that the Hindus believe cows are sacred, but other kinds of meat are fair game.) Twilight's done her homework and knows that.

4494583 sorry ponies. Cows here have less intelligence than certain bugs. And plus, atleast we kill them quickly and (mostly) painlessly.
Cows are not intelligent but they are not the lazy and dull thing you portray. being transported with a new environment and suddenly surrounded by strange equines would not be acceptable to a cow of any kind. they would be stressed and very interested in the change of local, they certainly wouldnt be unaware they where anywhere different.

Since I can't actually remember ever having been within thirty feet of a cow, you almost certainly know more than I would.
That being said, it's slightly more amusing to have this instead of, say, somepony getting trampled by a panicked cow and the ponies having to do an emergency abort to find a doctor.
