My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Season 8 Episode 4: "Fake It 'Till You Make It" (SPOILERS) · 3:59pm Apr 7th, 2018

In which Fluttershy. Just...Fluttershy. And Fluttershy. And Fluttershy. ...and Fluttershy.

Fluttershy is having a critter picnic at the animal sanctuary when Rarity runs up in a screaming drama fit.

Some of the writers have forgotten that Fluttershy is an expert at knitting and sewing in favor of a "bad knitting" gag that fell flat.

Anyway, Rarity's drama basically boils down to she can't find anybody to run her Manehattan boutique while all her assistants are busy working on a project for a big fashion show. Fluttershy is literally the last pony she asked (the montage of everypony she asks is HILARIOUS).

Rarity runs Fluttershy through the way Rarity4U is organized and basic management of the shop. Rarity demonstrates how to interact with her clientele (which is a bit baffling), then suggests how Fluttershy should conduct herself in interacting with the customers to overcome her shyness.

Fluttershy's first customer asks a question Fluttershy can't possibly know the answer to, and she immediately freaks out. On the advice of Rarity (before she left) and her animal friends, she gives herself a quick clothes-and-hairstyle makeover and puts on a "professional" persona, confidently nailing the sale with an act that's halfway between Rarity and Sassy Saddles.

Rarity rushes back to her shop in a panic when she realizes Fluttershy is basically a sheep among the wolves in Manehattan, but she runs into the satisfied customer, who convinces her there's no problem. So she heads off to the train.

Meanwhile, Fluttershy is bullshitting her way through her new temp job. But when she runs into a pony who isn't impressed by her "sophisticated salespony" persona, she rushes back of shop for a new costume--and puts on a hipster persona next.

The next customer is a goth, so Fluttershy goes goth to relate to him.

For the next while, Fluttershy alternates between Propershy, Hipstershy, and Fluttergoth, ultimately irritating her raccoon friends and driving them off. They head to the School to complain to Spike, who is an expert at animal charades. When Spike interprets the situation for Twilight, she rounds up her friends to head to the scene and save Fluttershy from herself.

Fluttershy's personas have all gotten out of control to the point where Flutterbitch has returned in roaring fashion. Her new bitchy attitude leaves her friends stunned and horrified--especially when she pushes them all out of the shop and slams the door in their faces.

The gang heads to Canterlot to tell Rarity how out of control Fluttershy has gotten.

Meanwhile, Flutterbitch is driving away customers with her excessive bitchiness. Rarity, surveying the situation, fires Fluttershy. Three times. Once for each crazy character. When all her characters are no longer needed, Fluttershy returns to her normal, kind self. She...kind of tries to apologize for how out of control she got, but it was a bit of a...Discord apology. Fluttershy's inner strength inspires Rarity to finish her last dress and debut it at the Manehattan store, with Fluttershy as the model.

I'll give this one a 9/10 just for Hipstershy and Fluttergoth. Derpibooru and Deviantart are gonna go NUTS with this episode.

I didn't know Rarity was part of the SCP Foundation.

Fluttershy is clearly the schizophrenic love child of Iron Will and Fili-Second

This was a great episode, but last week's was slightly better

When I realized Flutterbitch was slowly resurfacing I thought "oh, Moth is gonna love this ep."

Good season 8 Fluttershy episode.

She is quite the actress here, but as said went to far into her personas.

Nice to see continuity with the raccoon still living in the boutique, but yeah the forgot Fluttershy is also good at knitting. Additional error, we have either a miscoloured Berry Punch or a grey furred mare with somepony's else Cutie Mark.

Also, is the first male gothpony suppose to by a ponified version of Marilyn Manson?

This was a delightful farce. Especially that last bit of Confrontationshy. I shudder to think how the human behaves in Internet arguments.

She does have the Chamber of Extreme Knitting in the comics, but that's the comics.

That said, the comics do offer an answer to the question of "Where's Coco?" (Seriously, where was Hatbutt in all of this?)

I'll give this one a 9/10 just for Hipstershy and Fluttergoth. Derpibooru and Deviantart are gonna go NUTS with this episode.

Oh this is gonna be Flutterbat all over again isn't it.

This is thefirsttime i've been up early enough to watch an episode live in forever. It was a little weird. I still haven't finished off last season or see the first two episodes.

Need to correct that.

I'll give this one a 9/10 just for Hipstershy and Fluttergoth. Derpibooru and Deviantart are gonna go NUTS with this episode.

I mentioned it in the stream chat - I'm pretty sure Fluttershy has had the most named "personas" in all of FiM. Besides the three you guys mentioned, apparently Derpibooru has dubbed the "prim and proper" one as 'Severeshy', the goth persona could be Fluttergoth or Emoshy (though the latter more applies to the striped mane version), there's also Opposite Fluttershy, Flutterbitch, Impossibly Rich, and Saddle Rager.

You left out Flutterguy, Fluttertree, and Flutterbee.

I knew I forgot a couple. I went through the "implied by' tags under 'fluttershy' on derpi to find them, though that's kinda hard to dig through, what with the absurd number of ship tags.

This is also good horror fanfic material.

man what is the name of that brown maned “valley girl mare “ that flutters spoke to before her 2nd persona? cause i like the name Nieghvada (Nevada the state) or Valley Hills. cause i think i found a new waifu. i mean i grew up during the late 80s and the 90s myself

I'm glad to see Moonlight Raven again.

4835087 Doesn't Coco work for Rarity as a back-up to her main job of costume design? Maybe there was a big bridleway musical debuting. (Though that should have been mentioned).

I think Coco was only going to be handling the opening since Rarity was still looking for full-time staff.

So that's 3 goth ponies we've seen so far right?

The knitting thing bugged me a little as well, tho as others pointed out that was a thing in the comics. But worse was that she just how much she was BSing on when trying to answer the clients' questions because she WAAAAAYYYY back in "Suited for Success" her sewing knowledge stunned Rarity when she complained about her dress. The tea cozy thing just compounded that because even with the different skills involved between knitting and sewing I just can't see her thinking that her knitting was in any way acceptable quality. Looked like something Sweetie Belle knitted! :unsuresweetie: "Hey!"

That said it's really just a minor nitpick I happened to pick up. Maybe I'm just surprised that I noticed it since I'm usually the last person to pick up on things like continuity errors. Overall I really did enjoy it - I think my wife even got a kick out of, especially because she isn't really familiar with Fluttershy's alt personalities (I don't think she's seen "Putting Your Hoof Down") so seeing her "what the heck is going on with Fluttershy" face was pretty great! :rainbowlaugh:

I had a tough internal debate this week about whether to watch ponies or the Season 3 finale of Star vs. the Forces of Evil. Ponies won out, but I did watch the first part of the SVtFoE two-parter, then caught the last part when it reran a few hours later.

Seriously, that show's been super awesome since Miss Heinous/Meteora returned. The finale didn't disappoint, either.

Pardon me, what was I discussing? Oh, ponies.

Overall, I enjoyed the episode, though it's evident it was penned by some writers not fully versed in pony lore. Fluttershy never acted before? The spirit of Private Pansy weeps in the afterlife. Plus, there's the whole forgetting that 'Shy's fashion knowledge is second only to Resident Fashionista.

I did enjoy the "searching for a temp shopkeep" montage, and Flutter's descent into multiple personality disorder was pretty good. Hurrah for Spike showing his competence yet again by translating the raccoons' chitters for Twilight.

One other thing that bothered me: Just how far apart are Ponyville, Manehattan and Canterlot? The gang got together awfully fast for being scattered all over Equestria.

one thing that folks seem to be missing about the bad knitting, is that that was apparently her first cozy(how, when most folks do cozies rather early in knitting, and with flutter's skills in it, I have no idea). Other than that, it was a pretty decent episode.

Also, is the first male gothpony suppose to by a ponified version of Marilyn Manson?

I think he was supposed to be Edward Scissorhands because of the strap jacket, wild hair, and the snowflake cutie mark to reference the ice sculpture snowing scene.

I particularly enjoyed Hipstershy and Fluttergoth. Spike is a charades champion. Rarity was funny when she fired Fluttershy 3 times, especially Hipstershy.
