My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Season 8 Episode 3: "The Maud Couple" (SPOILERS) · 4:00pm Mar 31st, 2018

In which we get our first ever canon R63 character.

We open with Maud doing a set at a comedy club. A very...dry and unfunny set. Which is the joke. I guess? Nopony else seems to get it either.

Pinkie Pie is most obnoxious third wheel. Lyra and Bon Bon certainly don't appreciate her.

New opening debuts this episode! It's cool.

Pinkie's being extra Pinkie Pie trying to get some alone time with Maud and plan Maud's surprise birthday party. But Maud's been busy every night for a while.

The next morning, Pinkie goes comedically overboard trying to find Maud. Eventually, she gives up and goes shopping for ingredients for the special birthday cake, but she encounters a very unpleasant, snotty stallion with a slow voice and a severely pedantic manner. He holds up the line and gets on Pinkie's nerves--PINKIE! The pony who likes EVERYPONY!

After her altercation with the snotty stallion, she finally finds Maud, and learns that Maud has a boyfriend. Pinkie is ecstatic to meet him...

...until Maud introduces her to Mud Briar, the same annoying jerk from the baking supply shop.

Maud and Mud met at a petrified wood show. Maud is into rocks. Mud is into sticks.

Mud Briar is basically R63 Maud, except everything that makes Maud Pie awesome? Makes Mud Briar obnoxious, annoying, rude, and weird. Pinkie and Starlight even lampshade the hell out of this with Pinkie's ranting and Starlight's counterpoints. Starlight suggests Pinkie Pie get to know Mud Briar by planning Maud's surprise party together with him. Pinkie tries...but it just isn't working. No matter what, Pinkie can't bring herself to like Mud Briar. And when she talks to Maud, she learns Maud only likes surprise parties because throwing them makes Pinkie happy, and she'd much rather just hang out with Starlight, Pinkie, and Mud for her birthday. Pinkie is shocked that Maud likes Mud Briar as much as, if not more than, Pinkie, and runs off in tears, feeling like she's lost her place in her sister's life.

Pinkie runs back home to the family farm to talk to her other sisters, to try to figure out what's going on with Maud.

"So you're saying I should crack Mud Briar open like a rock!" WOW that got dark.

In the end, Pinkie kinda-sorta makes friends with Mud Briar (but clearly still isn't terribly fond of him) and, on his suggestion, throws a fake surprise party for Maud--the entire town attends the surprise party except for Pinkie, Mud, and Maud, who watch it from the hills above.

This episode had a LOT of padding, and Mud Briar is a character I honestly hope we don't see too much of. Technically, I liked this episode? But I can only give it an 8/10 because of all the padding and tiresome cartoonish Pinkie.

(Incidentally, I forgot to post my rating for the premiere. 9/10 for the premiere.)

This is one of the best and funniest Pinkie episodes.
Limestone is best pie sister

I think this episode was only padded a bit at the beginning. The comedy club scene didn't feel like it established anything. I'm guessing Nick wasn't sure how to lead into the story while saving Mud for the revelation before the commercial break.

Other than that, I liked this episode. It had a good deal of heart. The only thing is, Maud didn't technically say anything about a party or that she wanted to spend her birthday with Pinkie. Feels like a line went missing somewhere.

Well, haven't seen Pinkie go that crazy since Party of One.

The hallucinations on the bridge though. Twilight was my favourite. "I never learned how to read" :rainbowlaugh:

So you're saying I should crack Mud Briar open like a rock!

We're gonna see some Cupcake style of fanfics about this in less of an hour.

“Crack Mud Briar open like a rock?” Really? They couldn’t make a gag about putting a stick in the Mud Briar, or something?

I give it an hour and a half myself.
4829232
We need more Limestone and Marble.

4829227
Pretty sure it was Leonard from Big Bang Theory.

4829274
Parsons plays Sheldon.

I get the sense that this will be one of those episodes that's easier to watch the second time around. Some of the jokes definitely overstayed their welcome, but overall, I liked it. Especially Pinkie's nervous breakdown; those always make for a good time.

Here's his IMDB page. Not a lot on there.

His special talent is being a stick in the mud.

The same way we know Rainbow doesn't do the same.

Well, to be honest, Maud Pie herself is rude. Not all of her moments come down to awkwardness, if you ask me. Just because it was funny in the moment doesn't mean it wasn't rude when she insulted Discord to his face or made Rarity cry when she just tried to be friendly.

By the way, no mention of the reveal of Limestone being perpetually miserable and jealous of her little sister getting a boyfriend before she did? I mean, damn, I feel a little sorry for the girl.

4829291
...somehow, I never noticed until now that Quibble's mane is basically a greyscale rainbow. :rainbowhuh:

New opening new opening or just another slightly different animation like the last few times?

Zef

:pinkiegasp: "This is a FAMILY show!"

I liked the gag with Pinkie's imagined Opposite Day versions of the other Mane Six members. Something about Twilight blithely saying "I never learned to read!" is absurdly hilarious.

4829428
Actual new opening. The first few seconds of Twilight and Spike in the balloon are the same, but starting with Rainbow Dash's flyby, it's completely different.

4829291
Doesn't count, he's a cosplayer. :P

4829428
Massively remodeled opening.

I thought Mud Briar was funny. At first I didn't like the idea of him cause it interfered with my shipping bracket but honestly I think he's funny. I get the feeling that if Maude met Cheese Sandwich she wouldn't find him interesting unless she knew Pinkie liked him.

Technically Mud Briar wasn't being rude during their first encounter since pinkie did cut in front of him.

4829484
The song is the same, but the animation is completely redone aside from the first two or three seconds.

4829492
OK, so not a new opening.

4829274
No, Jim Parsons played Sheldon, and Mud Briar was definitely based on his character. I'd bet on it.

I don't know what everyone else is on about. I love this dude. I too have a tendency to speak very specific and pay attention to details when I talk. I also have a hard time reading the room.

TFW your computer crashes 10 seconds before the episode starts.

Not really liking Mud Briar. Feels like they chucked Maud Pie and Sheldon Cooper in a grinder to see what came out the other side. The whole 'they like each other because they're the same' thing just seems... off.

I would have preferred something closer to Kudzuhaiku's The Weed, that's by far my favourite Maud Pie ship fic

I hate Mud Briar even more than I hated Svengallop. Because, unlike him, I known Mud Briar is much more likely to be a recurring character. He’s tied to a character who’s staying in Ponyville, a sister of the main cast. Maud is my favorite Pie sister, but now I’ll have to deal with seeing his garbage face every time I see hers. At least there’s still Limestone Limetsun.

4829605
:facehoof: Get your head out of anime.

4829669
Where did that whole idea come from anyway? I know how I am, and I wouldn't want to date me at all.

4829584
His indecision ate up all the remaining time the store was open, when he knew there was someone now behind him who actually wanted to buy something there. Using the quote unquote 'correct' choice and being a literal stickler was more important to him than Pinkie, who apologised for cutting in line accidentally.

4829874
Based on his character it made sense why he would do something like that. He's very literal. Also it's easier to find attraction with someone if there's common ground for them. Besides between them there's enough differences based on how they see the world. Sticks and rocks are what separates them.

4829874
I imagine it's a misunderstanding of the reasons people ship Big Macintosh with Fluttershy or Marble Pie

4829428
No it's a new opening. The theme is the same but theirs new animation and not just new characters added in the background.

No, it's a new animation just like every time before. This series still hasn't had a second opening after 8 seasons.
RWBY has had 4 in as many seasons here's just the first two of them so you can see the difference:
Opening 1:

Opening 2:

4829959
You're confusing a new opening theme with a new opening. A show can have a new opening without having a new opening theme.

4829886

Besides between them there's enough differences based on how they see the world. Sticks and rocks are what separates them.

So...together, they're gonna break ponies' bones?

I'm with Pinkie on this one. He's supposed to be grating and annoying to be around, but it's occasionally funny. Take sticks in small doses,
Best jokes were the mind palace and illiterate twilight. I expect a dozen Mud Briar fics by Tuesday, more than half of those being crackfics.

4829997
Yes the irony wasn't lost on me.

Maud and Mudbriar make a cute couple. I liked Mudbriar's take on pinatas; it's stick abuse. Limestone's words of wisdom were really interesting.
