My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - "Mirror Magic" Special (SPOILERS) · 4:01pm Jul 8th, 2017

In which Sunset Shimmer goes back to Equestria!

That sneaky bitch Juniper Montage is already back for revenge!

Juniper is still bitter about everything that happened on the set of the Daring Do movie, and seeing the Dance Magic music video all over the mall where she now works as an usher and popcorn jerk isn't helping. While having a little drama queen meltdown, she comes into possession of a magic mirror.

By which I mean "kindasorta steals it from a kiosk while the clerk isn't looking", but since when did a little thing like shoplifting and petty theft matter to Juniper "I'm Special It's All About Me" Montage.

Meanwhile, Sunset is writing to Princess Twilight about her worries over rogue magic when she realizes her magic journal is out of pages. While she's talking to the girls about her fears, she gets a message from Princess Twilight asking her to come back to Equestria.

At the cinema, Juniper discovers the magic mirror is a wishing mirror.

Sunset heads back to Equestria, where she has trouble remembering how to horse. She meets Starlight Glimmer and gets a new magic journal. Their meeting is...awkward, since Princess Twilight is away, Sunset was hoping to talk to her, and Starlight doesn't really want to deal with Sunset's anything. Starlight talks Sunset into letting her go to the human world.

(This whole scene is a montage of HILARIOUS faces from Best Human and Psycho Pony.)

Starlight's first time as a human goes about like Twilight's.

The Rainbooms show up at the theater, encounter Juniper, and have a tense confrontation. Juniper throws a fit, then accidentally sucks the Rainbooms into her magic mirror. The accident gives her the key to figuring out how to control the mirror.

Sunset vents her problems to Starlight, who gives her some advice that...it's not bad advice? But it's not the best advice either.

Sunset and Starlight head for the movie theater, where Sunset sees Juniper wearing Fluttershy's barrette. She uses her empathy magic to read Juniper's mind to find out what she did to the Rainbooms. Sunset tries to convince Juniper to wish her friends back from the mirror, but Juniper wishes Sunset into the mirror. Starlight is left alone in a strange world, with no magic, and the only one who can bring Sunset and the Rainbooms back--and up against a bitter little bitch who has a magic wishing mirror and no morals.

Inside the wishing mirror, the girls' geodes start to glow. The running gag of Fluttershy trying to get everyone's attention surfaces again as the other girls discuss Starlight Glimmer being outside in the human world. The Human Elements of Harmony all react in unison and DEMON MAKEOVER! Juniper Montage becomes the latest supervillain to menace teenagers.

Starlight manages to steal the mirror from Juniper, but it starts to break during the fight. She tries to wish the Rainbooms back from the mirror, but it doesn't work. Inside the mirror, the Rainbooms are in danger of falling to their dooms in a dark abyss. Starlight tries to use the power of friendship on Juniper Montage. Juniper releases the Rainbooms from the mirror and apologizes for everything she's done, and joins the ever-growing club of reformed villains. Pinkie Pie hilariously lampshades the rapid-fire support group confessions, and Starlight gets permission from Princess Twilight to hang out in the human world for a few days.

I kinda want to take a half point off my score for this for no Shimmercorn. But that's petty. I'll go ahead and give it a full 10/10 even though it was a "Starlight saves the day" episode. Again. Ugh.

Sunny's gone native!

For me, this was easily the best EQG thing ever, and it's entirely because of Starlight.

Addendum: I call bullshit on Starlight Glimmer being able to JUDO FLIP KICK after 1 hour as a human. Seriously.

By which I mean "kindasorta steals it from a kiosk while the clerk isn't looking",

It's worth mentioning that Juniper tosses some bills at the kiosk, and the clerk turns his head to look at her after she says "Keep the change". Most likely the value of the money well exceeded the value of the mirror, so the clerk saw no reason to put up a fuss.

It was kind of rushed but I still enjoyed it. I wanted more Pony Sunset but I have to admit I like Starlight's human design. Like a lot.

This special was good, up until Sunset got sucked into the mirror. Everything after that was rushed, forced, and just a complete mess. Even "To Where and Back Again" didn't shill Starlight as horribly as this special did, this is EXACTLY what makes Starlight look so bad, is it so hard to ask the writers not to do this kind of stuff?

4595627

Actually that was kind of cool too.

4595635
Exactly. This is the kind of thing that makes her a horrible Mary Sue.

4595638
That's good though you don't want a character to be a great Mary Sue.

Also Juniper did pay for the mirror she left a bunch of money when she swiped it which we're meant to assume was enough.

And Juniper being reformed honestly strikes me as a bit sub-optimal. I think that I would have preferred for something to break through her magical corruption and delusions and her freeing the Rainbooms after she decides that she doesn't want their deaths on her conscience, but her not being all buddy-buddy with them afterwards.

4595647

Honestly her entire character is "meh" and forgettable.

MFW Sunset didn't have wings just proves that if you're not named 'Twilight' Hasbro thinks you can't lvl up.

4595662

Or it means Larson wasn't involved. :trollestia:

4595662
If they ever made sunset an alicorn they would want it to be big deal. If she came out of the portal with wings then the entire episode would have to be about alicorn Sunset and that wasn't the story they wanted to tell.

4595662 Honestly, I wouldn't expect Sunset to be an alicorn. She ran away and abandoned her studies, she chose to give that up. If she ended up getting them anyway, despite the growth her character has gone through, it would've only cheapened Twilight getting them on her own.

4595688 So did EqG Twilight and yet she gets the wings. It also implies that you need a "perfect record" which even Pony Twilight didn't have and that redemption and effort to be better count for nothing. It's BS.

This was a nice way to wrap up the EqG "shorts," as it were. The producers missed an opportunity by not naming the first one "Music Magic" to make all three of them "M" named.

The highlight of the episode for me had to be seeing Pony!Sunset again. How I've missed her. I didn't remember her eyelashes looking like that, but I found some stills from the first movie, and yep, that's how they were.

For those wondering why she didn't unicorn well, I have a theory. Before she was defeated, Sunset viewed the human world as a temporary base of operations. She bode her time until she figured out how to gain ultimate power and show Mom, I mean Princess Celestia, what a good girl she was and how she deserved the crown and WHY DON'T YOU LOVE ME LIKE THAT NERD BEE-YOTCH TWILIGHT SPARKLE?! WAH-HA-HA-HA-HAAAAA!

Ahem. Channeled a bit of OG Sunny there.

Anyway, afterward, she accepted Humanland as her homeworld, and as such, started acting like she'd always been a real girl. Henceforth the fumbling and stumbling upon returning to Equestria this time.

Starlight Glimmer's human design really reminded me of Zoe Trent from Littlest Pet Shop.

Have to agree with many commenters that Juniper's the weakest of the HuMane 7's villains to date. She's a spoiled brat who's being pissy because she didn't get to be Daring Do and become famous and junk.

Yep, in rides Starlight to the rescue. Do we need the Elements of Harmony, the new magic geodes or any alicorns with her around? That's sarcasm, by the way.

My second-favorite part was when Starlight, Sci-Twi and Sunset each gave a brief synopsis of her past misdeeds and Pinkie stated what we fans have been saying for several years: Those girls are extremely forgiving.

Overall, I enjoyed this three-week trip. Could the episodes have been stronger? Yeah, but they weren't terrible.

4595693
If I can scrounge up the energy, I had a story idea about this whole thing. Sunset IS an alicorn but inherited a gene that causes congenital winglessness. As an orphan, no pony knows her family history.

4595724:rainbowlaugh: I would read that~!

4595630
The mirror also looked completely different when she took it. I imagine the clerk was just going "whatever, crazy lady".:trollestia:
4595656
Yeah, it's too bad though. Her human design is cute.

Her monstrous form is ... weird. Total Uncanny Valley. Maybe that was the point, but unlike with the others, I don't enjoy looking at it. Brrr!

4595765

The better question is why did she have to all of a sudden get bigger? Like, is that a "Attack of the Thousand Foot Woman" reference?

On the one hand, yay, pony Sunset again, at last! On the other hand, ugh, it turns into the Starlight show after that. Even if I didn't dislike her, Starlight's already got tons of screentime in season six and seven! Whereas Sunset barely gets an hour of screentime a year (as she's sharing screentime with the Humane Seven). Its not quite as bad as comic #50, but I do wish instead Sunset and Starlight could have worked together rather than Sunset getting trapped too.

4595776

:rainbowlaugh:

But... I think it's missing something.

There you go. :moustache:

4595627
by the way did you read mlpfim issue 55 yet?...its intresting to say the least

4595800
Last one I read was #53.

4595689
You really need to stop commenting on these. We all get already.

4595741
What 4595892 said. I've warned you before about this. I've warned you, and you've chosen to ignore that warning.

I believe you know what happens when I ask somebody not to do something and they keep doing it anyway, right?

4595769
perhaps her transformation was a reference to the size of her ego

4595769
4595925
I think it's more basic than that: she wanted to be a BIG star...

4595929

A bigger ego than Trixie!? Say it isn't so!

4595932
At least Trixie has an excuse. Her ego is part of her act. Juniper is just an entitled little bitch who wants the world to bend over and adore her when she's done jack shit to deserve it.

I just realized something. A big part of Juniper's character trait is that she wants fame, glory and admiration immediately, without putting in the work or the time to get it, right? And her last name is "montage."

4595627
Twilight: "It took me 3 days to adapt to my human form."

Starlight: "Hold my cider."

4595967
I'm chalking it up to Starlight's proven "mind over matter" methodology which explains her magic. It's the only way I can justify that bullshit.

I kinda wanna skip the other specials and jump to making a follow-up for this one. There's going to be a lot of screaming.

4595693 I don't count the pony wings for the humane seven as being the same as actual alicorn wings.

4595719 I feel like only "Movie Magic" really stood out in a good way. "Dance Magic" should've utilized the time it got after being delayed to tweak the story and make it less of a poor man's "Rarity Takes Manehattan", and it's just so weird to see the Crystal Prep girls with Indigo Zap nowhere to be seen. "Mirror Magic" had so much potential, but as soon as Sunset got sucked into the mirror it just turned into "Shill Starlight"! The writers are better than that!

4596169 Rarity doesn't get wings. Sunset doesn't get wings. They're unicorns. Flutters and RD do get wings. They're pegasi. AJ and Pinky don't. They're earth ponies.

So Twilight, who's counterpart is a unicorn, gets wings. I don't really know what you want to call them, but it's a clear indication she's not the same as the others.

4595936
Apparently, the novelisation explains she's had a totally friendless upbringing.

I know, I have a hard time buying that too. Especially if you compare that to Timber Spruce and Gloriosa Daisy, who would've had good reasons not to have friends (living out in the frikkin' woods) and they turned out okay.

...These episodes just reminded me to get back to work on fanfics I started.
Anyway, I was expecting more of a reaction to the part where the writers addressed and solved the "out of Magic cellphone paper" issue as easily as you did about a year ago. Oh well.

This was my second favorite of the three specials. I did like the stuff, but I did find a couple things lacking. Just saying. You were right on the faces Sunset and Starlight made.

Anyone else think that the premise is pretty much an episode of Miraculous Ladybug? All you needed was a black butterfly.
