State of the Writer, April 2024!

    It's another boring one! I ain't wrote nothin'! :B

It actually feels lately like I've been crawling out of a pit? So maybe there's a light ahead? But it's also blocked by Balatro lol somepony save me D:

The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

She's Everything Inside of You That You Wish You Could Be [episode spoilers!] · 3:58pm May 20th, 2017

At this point, I am not even pretending I'm trying to keep to any kind of schedule. I've been friending all week, had no time to watch anything, who cares, it's all Canada's fault.

So yeah, for those keeping track, this one's about the Celestia/Luna episode. That I tried reallly hard not to get excited about when the synopsis was revealed, because Starlight Glimmer. :B

Yet, lo and behold, worst pony award this episode goes not to Starlight, but Twilight. The show writers do love making her annoying as fuck sometimes, y'know? Just, constantly freaking out about the wrong thing and making everything worse, good fucking job, Twilight, I used to really like you.

At least that tiny ballet dancer version of her is someone's fetish. >:B

No, but this is literally the episode the fandom has been clamoring for since like season two. Admittedly, if you wanted a slice of life piece showing the princesses' day, you're getting a good bit more than that, but as for me, all I wanted was, and I quote, "An episode where the Sisters act like sisters", and that is fucking exactly what I got. :3 Starlight of course gets to do some bone-headed cutie mark bullshit, but it turns out for the best, since that's pretty much the whole plot.

My god. Best Luna episode since Do Princesses Dream, and more or less a spiritual sequel. It's another episode about the princess(es) having problems that, on the surface, seem obvious, but stem from deep-seated emotional issues. (Seriously, giving Luna power over dreams was the best decision the show has ever made. It opened up so much good narrative potential.) I just, I really, really get into that, probably because I have deep-seated emotional issues of my own (who doesn't, really) and I really, really like the princesses. As they were arguing with each other, I just started grinning more and more; it was what I needed. Lewis and Songco may have botched the premiere, but as far as I'm concerned, they're the best writers in the show right now.

Also, a considerably better Nightmare Moon cameo than the season four opener.

AND THEN WE GOT THE MOTHERFUCKING DAYBREAKER HOLY SHIT STAND BACK THIS IS JUST TOO GOOD

First, I want to say that Daybreaker is a way better Nightmare Celestia name than anything the fandom has ever come up with. Admittedly, all I can bring to mind right now is "Solar Flare", but I never did like that one, and just sort of defaulted to it the way I do with Conner Cogwork's R63 names, y'know?

The rest of that scene was just sort of a blur of orgasmic bliss for me. :V So I'm not sure I have any coherent conclusion to make about this episode, save that I can call it the best so far without caveats, unlike with Parental Glideance, and I hope someone gets the reference in the blog title, because I was way about that song, to say nothing of the band, back in like 2001. :B Also, Celestia sounds very Cheerilee when she's yelling.

Best episode of the season for me too. Shows exactly what the show is capable of at its best.

Daybreaker.

Holy ducking skit, that name sold me. It's like a damn Warhammer villain.

Great character building, good hidden implications and Persona-esque facing the self, sure-they-ripped-the-comics-but-they-did-it-well, sure-it-was-Glimmer-but-at-least-it-was-kinda-an-accident-this-time, and Daybreaker. Look upon her. Look upon the End.

I liked "Nightmare Flare" but Daybreaker is pretty sweet.

Adding: Twilight I can understand acting like she did, considering who was involved. It's annoying, but entirely within her character.

I agree with your analysis of Twilight... Five minutes into the ep and I wanted to hit her with a shovel

Now we just need Royal Apple, Party Animal, Prism Burst, and Beast Tamer and we have ourselves an evil Main Six.

And if you're wondering where the other two were, we already have Midnight Sparkle and Nightmare Rarity...:duck:

Have to watch it yet but i know i will love it and jizz my pants...

Easily the best episode of the season. This one's going to be a lot of fun to cardify.

Also, one fun little detail: Sure, Luna left Celestia a few messes to clean up, but at least they know about them. Celestia took all night to deal with one nightmare. Who knows how many troubled psyches Luna will have to soothe come tomorrow night?

There is a Doctor Who reference in one of the dreams I saw. Also, Queen Derpy looked awesome! :derpytongue2:

I agree, this one's going to be tough to top. So much win!

And now the map can call other ponies besides the manes. How this works, I have no idea, but there we go!

EDIT: Forgot to mention how FREAKING TERRIFYING Luna's nightmare was. Damn.

It's episodes like this that got me like
toonarific.com/pics_root//00002666/ocanadalogo.jpg

Also, the old princess shipper in my just got a kickstart to the heart! I can taste the fics already.
Celestia talking to herself when no one is around because she's used to constant company...
Luna canonically giving no shits...
THE MOTHER:yay:ING BANANA JOKE
Luna can't cook for shit...

There is just so much little details to unpack in this episode. So very very much fanfic fuel...oh god...the crap that's gonna come out of me and several other accounts from this...

4540181 Why would you need to know how to cook when your diet consists the the rinds and peels of fruits.

Also, yeah, this was a fantastic episode that very nearly drove me to tears.

4540213

very nearly drove me to tears

You and me both.

Also why would you need to know how to cook when you are the god empress of an entire specie? It's like Celestia spent time working at an IHOP or Waffle House some time in her youth to be that dedicated to pancake fruit faces.

And as an aside, I meant to tell you I dreamed a Majin style fic last night. Like not something you have wrote, but it felt like something you would write. And now I wonder if I should write it.

At least that tiny ballet dancer version of her is someone's fetish. >:B

PP no

Daybreaker was so great.

"Deep inside you know how powerful you are"
"So much black, we get it, you're sad"

So great.

That sounds too much like "Nightmare Flair", which would be like... When the Nightmare virus runs out of actual powerful ponies to infect and is left with, like, Coco Pommel. :B

4540079
I've never had a teeth dream, but I love that they used that, because I know it's classic dream imagery. And it was pretty horrifying!

Luna's greatest fear is letting people down. :c

4540250
Celestia is pancake. Fucking write it.

4540366
Maybe I fucking will!

I read that as "You wish everything that you could be inside of her."

Then again, I also read the last twenty blog post titles that way.

I was scared about this episode, and very happy it was a top tier episode. GJ Pony

I remember that song. They used to play it all the time at the gym that I went to. It's... not really great workout music.

This episode was just stellar. And solar. Eclipsular. I loved the hell out of it.

Gonna have to knife fight you about Twilight, though. She was fun and funny as hell in this. I love having her personality back. Like, I don't want it in every episode, but freaking out is a core part of who she is.

They've been knocking it out of the park recently. I mean, we had the CMC episode (shudder), but other than that, there's been some great stuff. Hopefully this isn't front-loading all of the good stuff at the beginning. It'd be a real shame if the season goes downhill in the second half, but if they keep this up, this will be one of the best.

4540443
That is a very specific sort of dyslexia.

To be fair, the TCG used Nightmare Star, Solar Flare, so for a while Hasbro couldn't come up with anything better for Nightmare!Celestia either.

I actually watched this episode because of this recommendation (I quit the show a long time ago). While it was a good episode, I think it reaffirmed why I stopped watching the show in the first place. After so much fanfic, the show feels kind of rushed and incomplete by comparison. Even during the good parts (like Daybreaker's appearance and Motive Rant or the slice of life elements at the begining), my brain could only think of them in the context of fanfic. "This would be a good topic to explore in a story." "This would be interesting in a longer story." Thoughts like that.

At least the people who still do watch the show are getting decent episodes now and then.

Well, I think it was your blog that called out Lesson Zero haters, and I will forever be one of those, so...

4540703
Oh, pssh. Pssh. The CCG, go figure. :B We can blame Cupcakes for that, then.

4540727 And I will always call out Lesson Zero haters, but not as hard as I'll call out Bats! lovers!

Y'all are just mind-boggling!

Easily the best episode in the season. Bar none. Nothing else comes close. Might be the best episode in the past 3 or 4 seasons, not that they were bad. This instantly went into my top 5. We've been waiting 7 seasons for this, and though it might not have been worth the wait per se (in that I would have liked to see this episode three seasons ago. Replace Spike at Your Service with it!) I adored it. My wife and I were both laughing throughout the whole thing. It was genius. Daybreaker? And she can breathe fire? Perfect. Just perfect. You're right in that it's the best name for Nightmare Celestia so far. It's so obvious in hindsight! I also loved the little touch that their horn auras switched when their cutie marks did. It's the little touches that made the episode truly great, like when Luna eats the peel instead of the actual banana.

I didn't actually mind Twilight in this one. I thought she was hysterical, and they didn't use her too much, which would have been very easy. It's in character for her to do that. Her being a music box ballerina was inspired. "Why are you here?!"

"I'm not! It's a really easy spell. I'll show you when you get back!"

Neurotic freaked out Twilight is one of her best character traits to me.

All that said, yeah, one of the best episodes in the show period. I'm only worried we won't like the rest of the season because it's likely that nothing will come close to this.

This episode was fantastic, and everything tastes like happy rainbows.

4540250 Celestia working at a waffle house...

Yes.

Huh. That's not how I took this one. Suffice to say, at least here, I put this as the worst episode this season, and it's hard for me to decide how far back I need to go to find another I disliked more, but it could be as far as Season Three.

It does not help that Friends Forever did this a lot better a couple months ago.

It was a fine episode, a little lower than Parental Glideance for the convoluted way they squirmed Starlight into the plot. They literally did not need anyone besides Celestia and Luna in this episode.

This just in: being the plot contrivance does not mean you're becoming a more developed character.

People who love Bats are to be suspected of sedition. <.<

4540850
I'm way behind on the comics.

But hey, there's always gotta be someone on the other side of the fence. Glad you took this one for the team. :B

4541018
Cutie-mark-swapping is just a step above mind-control in this world, and the fact that she did it reflexively? Yeah, I still say she needs to be locked up. :V

4541239
To whom it may concern: Would you kindly detail the precise manner in which Starlight Glimmer is a reformed villain?
Most sincerely yours,
Me

Or perhaps Twilight could look up another copy of those books with the reform spells in them. Starlight, after all, hardly would have standing to reject their application as, indeed, the right thing to do. <.<

4541239

Cutie-mark-swapping is just a step above mind-control in this world, and the fact that she did it reflexively? Yeah, I still say she needs to be locked up. :V

She wants to do good, it's just that her skill set is fine-tuned to evil.

Gotta say, between sperging out over princesses and absolutely not helping, I loved Twilight. Sometimes the show feels like she's gone too far toward becoming the voice of reason and wisdom, a pony of perfected virtue, and that's a dull place for her. So this was fun even though she's a terrible mentor here.
