For a left-leaning UK resident, this was not the happiest of weeks. After spending hours over-analysing polling data, speculating on what flavour of Labour/SNP/Green/LibDem parliament we would get, and the end result of the general election is the most unexpected and least cool scenario of a majority Conservative government. Intent on further cuts to public spending, abolishing the Human Rights Act, and taking a road which could lead to British exit from the European Union. Not cool.
So I spent the weekend at home, eating too much ice cream. And I was in need of some pony fiction therapy - i.e. writing something short and FUN. The result is an extended version of a minific I did for a writeoff some time ago: All in the Presentation.
Now time to look for a job in Alberta.
They are what? Seriously? They want to abolish the whole of the Human Rights Act???
Damn. They really do want to pass those "You have no rights to privacy" laws that badly? Yeesh. Dark days ahead. Fuck.
I just heard on the news, that theyre looking to cut £12 BILLION from the benefits bill.
If 40% of the population is in poverty as has been claimed the last couple years, that will be a reduction in every poor household, of about £1000 a year.In my case, almost 20% reduction.
Trident update as it is and HS2 would pay for about 15 years of that.
I wonder where they are getting the money from.
Exit poll had an error of 3%. So called majority they got, was 2% variation. that was 2SD, or as much as 1 in 10 chance. Bookies were giving 1 in 44.
I wonder if they are going to ban Watson from running in the next GE, because they cant hope to compete? which they wll be able to because of pulling European Human rights, unless someone sneaks it in and they believe computers are cardboxes filled with candles and theres no worry passing it because theyll never be able to be a threat.
If you get one in Edmonton or Banff in the next week or so, drop me a line. I'll be there for a wedding.
Isn't Canada run by Stephen Harper, who is basically David Cameron but with grey hair? Not much point to switching countries then.
UK went conservative but Alberta went away from it? What an odd odd world (well more so about Alberta).
:c
If it's any consolation, the U.S. somehow survived eight years of George W. Bush. Things will get worse, but life will go on.
Further consolation: Your right wing parties probably still aren't as right wing as my right wing parties. I mean, your guys are not-so-subtly pushing for a theocracy, right?
Yup, I think it's the first times I was shocked by an election result. Not pissed off or anything but actually shocked.
Five more years, this time with a majority... the UK will be unrecognisable after this.
I'd say come over here to Denmark but we're due for the same treatment after the general election this year.
People seemingly just want to be screwed over as long as they can watch somebody they don't like being screwed over worse.
Oh please, at least they don't intend to spend money we haven't got. And when Benefits and the NHS form more than 50% of government spending don't you think that they should come down? And all they're doing is giving us a referendum on the EU. You know, that democracy thing that the left seem so very much against these days. Socialism is supposed to be about everyone having a voice, which under these circumstances is terribly ironic. And they are not abolishing the Human Rights Act, not entirely. Merely the part that forces us to allow prisoners to vote. 7 in 10 people in this country say that prisoners should not get the vote, yet it forces us to allow this. That is not democratic. It's all about democracy my dear chap, and the sheer entertainment value that the right seems to be more willing to listen to the people than the left. I've been laughing all weekend.
3060799 Still not as damaging as 8 years of obama.
3063303 Which themselves weren't as damaging as the eight years of Bush before him.
