    Eclipse 2024

Best of luck to everyone chasing the solar eclipse tomorrow. I hope the weather behaves. If you are close to the line of totality, it is definitely worth making the effort to get there. I blogged about how awesome it was back in 2017 (see: Pre-Eclipse Post, Post-Eclipse

    End of the Universe

I am working to finish Infinite Imponability Drive as soon as I can. Unfortunately the last two weeks have been so crazy that it’s been hard to set aside more than a few hours to do any writing…

    Imponable Update

Work on Infinite Imponability Drive continues. I aim to get another chapter up by next weekend. Thank you to everyone who left comments. Sorry I have not been very responsive. I got sidetracked for the last two weeks preparing a talk for the ATOM society on Particle Detectors for the LHC and Beyond, which took rather more of my time than I

    Imponable Interlude

Everything is beautiful now that we have our first rainbow of the season.

What is life? Is it nothing more than the endless search for a cutie mark? And what is a cutie mark but a constant reminder that we're all only one bugbear attack away from oblivion?

    Quantum Decoherence

    Happy end-of-2023 everyone.

I just posted a new story.

    EInfinite Imponability Drive
In an infinitely improbable set of events, Twilight Sparkle, Sunny Starscout, and other ponies of all generations meet at the Restaurant at the end of the Universe.

This is one of the craziest things that I have ever tried to write and is a consequence of me having rather more unstructured free time than usual for the last week.

Eclipse 2024 · 10:22pm April 7th

Best of luck to everyone chasing the solar eclipse tomorrow. I hope the weather behaves. If you are close to the line of totality, it is definitely worth making the effort to get there. I blogged about how awesome it was back in 2017 (see: Pre-Eclipse Post, Post-Eclipse Post; also my eclipse story). While I briefly toyed with the idea of taking another trip to see this one, but didn’t think I could really justify another trans-Atlantic flight. Technically it is visible in the UK. If you drive out to the west coast and watch the setting sun, for minute or so you just might see the moon clip the edge before it drops below the horizon.

Other news from me. If you haven’t noticed, Infinite Imponability Drive is now Complete. Thanks to everyone who has read and commented. Sorry I haven’t been very good at responding to things lately. I hope to write a post or two to deconstruct this crazy project in the next week or so.

I convinced myself I didn't care about it because A) it's everywhere here, completely inescapable, and my inner high schooler rebels against conformity, and B) the weather here is always bad for stuff like that, so why get excited. :B

But there is a gremlin in my brain telling me I should prepare to look directly at the sun tomorrow, how bad could it be? >_> Spoilers: Really bad, do not do this!

I'm down in Arkansas with some friends for the Eclipse.

I saw the 2017 eclipse with some friends, now I’m watching this one with family. Absolutely worth the trips both times.

Watching from my mom’s house in Buffalo! I’m looking forward to it!

I'm in Texas, so I'll have my fireworks and drums all ready to scare away the Dragon trying to eat the Sun tomorrow.

...wish me luck...

Watching it from Ottawa!
>mfw 99% totality
Would've gotten my driver's license earlier if I knew that 100% totality was about an hour's drive into the countryside...

Went out today and made a little pin-hole viewer. From where I am, the coverage was only about 50%. It still became noticeably cooler and all the birds stopped yammering for a while.

Thanks for the reminder about Infinite Imponability Drive; I've added it to my read-it-sooner list!

Saw it in Cleveland today, then drove like 9 hours to get home. It was worth it. Photos do not do it justice. Really drives home just how weird and special our planet is, IMO.

What tiny hope there was of seeing partial horizon edges from Ireland were thoroughly squashed by the heavy, murky clouds. There actually hasn’t been a total eclipse on Irish soil since 1724, and our next one won’t be till 2090, a year I might not make it to…

That said, in two years time there will be one going from northern Spain up to Iceland. Might be worth travelling for that, even though there would be a decent partial view from here. Tried watching the NASA livestream last night, did not do it justice. Would be cool to experience in person the once…

I drove from southeast Texas to the Ouachitas in Arkansas to get out of the forecast cloud cover. It was worth the drive.
