Thanks AutoPony, now I'm depressed. I hope that you are happy with yourself.
why do i feel your setting up a bio pony uprising with "improved" sunrise as the leader and celestia of the group.
...As crazy as it sounds, I think Midnight's—Well, Shadow's—memory was more than wiped. I don't know how Pony Bot engineering and bioengineering works in this universe but if those personality and processing chips are anything to go by, swapping them out may damn well be similar to getting a brain transplant.
If that's the case then my theory is that her memory was more than wiped, she's a brand new soul forced into a body that used to be occupied. Shadow literally doesn't exist anymore. Well, unless... If she does exist then it's the form of a stowed away chip.
It had been mentioned back a few chapters how Midnight had been altered to include the Twilight chip. So, this scenario was what she had been before that alteration. Also, the description of this "Sunrise" pony bot seems to resemble the one now named Starla.
Tightening up some loose threads here, perhaps? A bit of background for Midnight?
Dude, this gets more interesting as the tale unwinds...
Okay, okay... ouch...
This is some great world building, even if it's a bit depressing.
I hope we get more peeks like this into where pony bots come from and how they are made.
Awww >< Midnight...
That's just awful, but this does do a great job exploring her a bit more
I wonder if in the future, some bit of this memory might remain
Auto, thank you for deciding to include the one shots!
Also, why are people still calling them bots? They're real living ponies. Fully organic. Bred in an artificial womb in a lab - sure, but I don't think that makes them in any way bots.

I'm 100% sure Sunrise isn't Starla - Teddy mentioned he and her met in a different company located in a completely different state. Besides, why would he give her a different name if she already had one? He was also around much of Starla's time in the lab so he'd have to knew Midnight from back then. Also, Starla has prosthetic forelegs (before she got them she couldn't stand, let alone run) - memory wiped Midnight would surely ask about them.

They probably call them bots specifically so the Don’t think of them as living creatures.

No, no... I mean people here in the comments, not in the story :D

Ahh

Then, perhaps "pony-borg" might be a better term. As in "pony-cyborg", meaning a living, organic pony having robotic enhancements. The author has been describing them as a kind of cyborg without actually naming them as such.
The use of the term "bot" is merely a convenient term. Yes, I have fallen down the age-old path of Humans being superior, when in all actuality, anything, either organic or biological, or even robotic, should be considered to have "life" as being both aware and sapient.
Thank you pointing out my error in thinking. I read too many of these fics here, and sometimes I get mixed up.
It would be nice if Sunrise met Midnight again. I mean, there is a chance, right? Teddy probably isn't the only one making friends with ponies, so maybe she was deemed defective due to being depressed and someone took her home instead of dumping the poor girl's lifeless corpse in a dumpster.
As a side note, it would be horrifying to read about how the 'defects' are disposed of from the perspective of someone who doesn't care. It would put the sheer cruelty of fucking around with the creation of sentient artificial life into perspective.
Damn, shows tje real.evil here
:(

Bots are purely mechanical. The series Shadow and Sunrise are part of are different and technically illegal.
I wonder if Midnight gives much thought to Sunrise these days. At a minimum she would likely realize any of the ponies there could suffer exactly as she did.

Yea I think just midnight and a few others are all organic/cyborg. The rest are pure robots preprogrammed.
11824852
Because aside from those that were created as a part of the now illegal bio pony program, they ARE bots. The bio ponies made are probably more accurately referred to as pony cyborgs.
Midnight and Starla are the *only* pony cyborg that we know of in the story - bio ponies such as Sunrise (and the others mentioned there but unnamed) are bio engineered, but otherwise completely organic. And illegal.
The bots, such as Twilight who we saw before, are robots with circuits, servos, motors, etc. There's nothing organic about them, but they are legal and can be bought from many different vendors in this universe.
Midnight stopped being 100% bio pony when this little one-shot happened - the initial experiment was to try putting chips in her noggin to not only enhance her intelligence, but to see what it would do introducing a preprogrammed personality - or personalities - into something alive.
In Starla's case, her only cybernetics are her front legs.

Okay, so my theory of pre-placed personality chips being swapped or increased in number from one original chip to multiple chips falls a little bit short since they never had any to begin with. When you meant bio-pony, I didn't think you meant 100% bio. That's on me, thanks for the clarification!
Not only is that a fair bit worse but it sounds similar to injecting raw DID and BPD into a human brain, right? Even as a reader of this story I'm grateful that John is as levelheaded and thoughtful as he is. Midnight needs that stabilization.
I cried so hard. This was the moment that she couldn't trust anything. Even before it was her turn.
From slow burn romance to a surprise one shot that rips your heart outta your chest....
God....
Can someone give sunrise a hug?
I want to burn EquisCo to the ground, just Exterminatus the entire top of the company.
(The fact that I was listening to Sabaton's Last Stand as I was reading this certainly doesn't help either)
