The greatest beach in the world.

Nobody knows where it is. But it's a place you are bound to visit at some point.

Normally, you'd get to visit it just once.

River Republic border trooper Strawberry and her squad are considering what beach would be their ideal vacation spot this summer.

Optimistic in a (positively) painful sense, but that's what this is and I adore this fic for that. It does bring into focus one thing about warfare that is just as important as fighting the enemy before you: of the people behind you that you've sworn to protect. The gruesomely late realization that everyone else is dead and that Sunny Shores is, well, some sort of afterlife just brings it home even more. Strawberry's duty might've ended there... but she had to pull through for the ponies that still lived.

Notably, the suddenness of the chapter's events give it a dream-like quality. Other than the first chapter, there's little to no preparation for the whiplash that is the turn to preparing for an invasion, to the actual fighting, to getting on a beach somehow, and then getting back to the living. While I think part of it might've been a precaution to stay below the word limit, it does have its own quality of, well... you know the thing about a dreamer not knowing how he got where he is right now? Inception style? I think that works in your favor here, given... well, the afterlife being a place we visit here.

With that, thank you for the nice story, Mokoma!

Eeeeeeeee! Thank you for your awesome comment!!!

A very interesting take on a very mundane prompt, probably the favourite approach out of everyone. While I did think that your story was not the best last year, if you had won it this year I would have zero complaints. (I actually didn't read the results because I was going to read all the stories, but somebody has claimed in their long description they did it, and I have little reason to doubt that).
