Moonatik

A man with more ambition than he will ever have time.

It was supposed to be so simple for Grim Fate. A necromancer from a far-away land, she offered her services to King Sombra and easily rose through the ranks of his forces owing to her magical skill. With legions of undead thralls under her command, she'd rule the world as one of Sombra's Legates. All that stood in the way was the Lunar Empire to the south.

Eleven months had passed since the Lunar-Crystal War began. After some initial victories in the first weeks, the war had been nothing but a slow, agonising retreat. Now the Lunars had the Crystal City itself surrounded, and for the last week what disorganised and depleted Crystal legions existed in the city could barely resist.

Now pinned down in the midst of the war's final battle, Grim must put in her all if she wants to escape Lunar justice. Sombra himself may not survive, but Grim won't give up without a fight.

Takes place in my New Lunar Millennium alternate universe. More information can be found here, but no prior knowledge of my AU beyond the general concept is required to read this story.

It's a slow emaciation, a gradual stripping away of Grim's powers that makes this a great read. She's a necromancer, but we don't get any more of that after the first third; she struggles against weaker and weaker opponents (entire battalions before the story > a single mage > some generic[?] soldiers > concedes to a researcher who probably didn't fight her way to glory).

It's also rather... saddening, maybe, that for all that beset her, Grim never really did much introspecting or wondering about herself through all this, save for something about loyalties. It's clear that she wants to dark magic, but the morality of it? How those souls she tampered with might've suffered? Being given a job in the Lunar Empire would probably do nothing but reinforce a downward spiral for herself (if you believe that dark magic does corrupt morally).

All in all, this was pretty nice! Thanks for the dark romp, Moonatik!

holy cow thanks for the nice comment!!

I've got a few stories planned involving grim, including one that goes a fair bit into her emotional side. though a *real* moral redemption is not on the horizon for her. the new lunar millennium doesn't tend to reward principled morality, like canon twilight sparkle, nor does it reward chaotic barbarism, like king sombra, and until a better world is built cold ruthless pragmatism is the best way to go.

was fun to read over, hope to see more

ends up defecting to luna empire, Luna empire defeated by celestia.

Grim: why do I always end up on losing side

Interesting, really interesting. I'm looking forward to future works of this universe!

Actually! While I don't have much in the way of stories like this, if you're interested in the world there's plenty of visual art set in this world you can see: https://derpibooru.org/tags/new+lunar+millennium Much of it has attached stories or context in the description, too!
