This was a good effort for a first story. Your premise is a bit contrived, but not annoyingly so. It does seem like there's not enough information about the situation presented in the story itself. It feels like there needs to be more character reaction to the situation they find themselves in. Also, you had a lot of issues with consistent verb tense. I'd recommend you stick with past tense going forward.
