First contact has been made, successfully, and the strange equine creature known as Twilight Sparkle had assured us that we would be welcome to cement relations with Earth with an embassy in Canterlot.

You cheeky old... well played, Celestia.
Miss Sudden Turn, aka Scootaloo, what are your feelings towards Mister Saffron Ree?
Good to see Scoot become a reliable officer and trainer.
Are you talking about the data on the internet? I don't think she really mean that one. Most of them aren't for academic anyway.
Ask Moondancer: Could you describe your computer you have back home?
Ah, so she did figure out that flying thing. Most excellent.
In this AU was Scootaloo a late bloomer or something? I thought teh way they were going over teh seasons, was that she would end up a literal Pegasus. A stupidly powerful vectored thrust engine, that someone stuck the rest of the aircraft to?
Something that could be worth in Earth trade, would be Silicone Non-Slippers, tough, resiliant, easy clean, anti skid, etc? After all, Winter Tyres use similar compounds? Certainly for hospital use because the ease of use for Autoclave sterilisation, and quieter ward walking?
Feels more now like they're grooming him for the Wonderbolts than teaching him to fly.
to mr. and mrs. ree
Are the two of you worried that by the time your tenure in equestria is up you may have gone so native that you wont be able to intigrate back into human society?

And why wouldn't they? He's a really gifted flyer that they managed to get their hooves on in an unthinkable age for normal ponies. One that's lethally an adult human and could choose to remain in equestria when his mother's term comes to an end. That would come back anyway in some fifty years with a strong base, even if rusty - and that's not to mention the brownie points for helping the ambassador's son.
He's basically the (almost) perfect young recruit that they'd be stupid not to train.
Someone (probably Randall Munroe) did the math a few years ago. Clair is not only not exaggerating, but things are being added to it faster than any human reader could keep up with... Actually, I think the real comparison was that it was being added to faster than a printer could keep up with.

She's going to laugh and say something about an abacus, or cringe and say something about an abacus, or something else that denotes that she lives in a pre-industrial society and doesn't even have home electricity. Maybe don't ask a recent widower whether he's stopped beating his wife?

Because the Wonderbolts are a military outfit. You can't join a foreign military if you're a citizen of a different nation without giving up your citizenship. The whole situation with Saffron feels contrived to be honest. He was forced to come only to make a heel turn and love it so much he wants to stay forever and leave his whole life behind, and just so happens to have just become a legal adult at the same time so nobody can make him come back. Its almost like he was deliberately shipped to equestria to turn him into a soldier for them.
10051543
That's how it works for the US, not the rest of the world. I don't think equestria has any reason to look at him as a soldier, if anything teaching military training techniques to as foreign element that could skeedadle at any time would be extremely stupid. But they still do it, because they're not warmongering militarists, but pacifist ponies whose military has way less an emphasis on war than average defending from actual monsters - a situation Earth hasn't felt slightly like for millennia.

The junior wonderbolts is more like Jr ROTC ( high school Reserve officer training corp) or Explorer Scouts ( boy scout troop that work in a specific work field medical, law enforcement, ect .) yes the cadre will be real professionals but they are not soldiers or kid cops . is it a recruiting tool ? yes but only as far as an individual saying when I grow up I want to be a fill in the blank.
10051515 There are downloadable "mirrors" you can get that have a snapshot of Wikipedia at that point in time. It's only a few hundred gigabytes IIRC. (Checked, about 220GB for English.)
10051668 Pretty much. It gives a taste of what military regimenting would be like, as well as good grounding in the skills needed. It doesn't teach young ponies to be soldiers. That said, as I've described it, the Wonderbolts itself is only a quasi-military unit. It has soldiers in it, and they can be called to active duty, but the non-soldier members do not participate in any military actions of the Wonderbolts.

"Only" 220 gigs? You realize that each of those gigs is a billion of something that you can usually make a text character out of one of, right? The images skew things a bit lower but it's enough for Clair to be understating by necessity because it's just so far beyond the scale of what the mind can really deal with.
10052136 Clair was also ballparking a guesstimate. I was actually halfway through doing the research to find out "how much digital storage the internet would need" when I realized "Clair doesn't know this fact off the top of her head" and just had her estimate. She never, for one second, thought about printing it all out.
10052139
Because she knew the idea was so laughable that she was literally laughing at it. And as you've pointed out repeatedly in-story, politicians don't laugh easily.
10052165 Damn ponies have been putting her off her game.
Has Clair been stationed in Russia before? I'm told that in Russia, smiling must have a reason, and in fact smiling at someone randomly or who you have just met would be equivalent to laughing at them.
10054514 No, she's been a staffer in the White House for the current president for some time, however. This is her first "overseas" mission.
It just feels so good to see Scootaloo airborne.
Family in a nutshell.
Nice to see the Ree kids settling in... though the language issue will definitely need to get ironed out in later versions of the translator.
To Moondancer: You're basically getting an encyclopedia you'd have to store in a warehouse. Anything else you'd like on top of that?
10050828
Other Earth wonders to trade? Velcro, fountain pens (when you're not a unicorn with a fancy magic-refilling enchanted quill), aluminum... And there's knowledge too like how to build skyscrapers (they can learn from our mistakes of buildings in the past), mass production and doing other things super sized (although I kinda doubt they would have much need of it).
Ooops.... Now they discover the MLPUT needs an "off switch"? How much FUBAR is that going to cause?
And let's not forget all the Marines and a Navy Captain who might want to practice disconnecting the UT to keep their English ability alive, too.
Don't know why, but for some reason that line reminds me of RPGs, Choose-Your-Own-Adventure text games, and light novels.
Somthing about the way it's phrased perhaps?
