6720325 I'm glad someone doesn't think it's crap. The only thing I can guess is because "automatic downvote because 'self insert'" Even though he's only self insert by name.
I read this out of curiosity, after the first 3-4 letters, I might get why it has the many down votes it has, for one, it has no world built. Everything that he writes is quite standard and to be expected of a guard. The letters don’t tell us the story behind the two how they got together, how their relationship is, how they fell in love etc. Because of this we cannot really feel for the character. It pretty much comes down to: here is my OC, his marefriend is Rainbow Dash.
What I miss the most is Rainbow’s reply. It leaves a void because we don’t know what she writes back and how its worded. Not to mention how she feels to his letters.
As a last note, your description is a... somewhat advertisment. And as you mentioned, its 1.2k words of small masseges, there are stories that have done it like this, but more expanded and bigger world build.
It ain’t harsh critisism, just my two cents on why I think it got the downvotes it got.

No probs, bud. I'm all for OCs x canon, but it is nice to have a bigger story around the two, you know? How'd they met, how did their relationship blossom. All the things that make the reader connect with the characters and get us immersed into the story.
I wish you good fortune with this story and other ones.
