You have mistyped Shining's name by doing "Shinning".
Also LOL at the reactions of Cadence and Shining, especially Shining. I'm pretty sure David can share a few of human science fictions he has around.
7350277 They called him "Shinning" when he kept banging his lower legs against the bunk early in the mornings... :D
Ahh, the L5 ONiel Colony Cylinders. Handy to have the book just behind me if I need it.
I think I might have a handle on the theoretical modification to the Alcubierre warp field to turn it into the Star Trek warp field. Came from a modification proposed to a stasis field so an object contained within it could have the protection from mass, eenergy etc but not have the time lock.
A 4 dimentional donut. The ship sits in the non 4D enclosed hole in the middle, but is totally surrounded by the field effect when compared to 3D space. therefore the ship can recalculate the field as needed at local light speed while being seperated from universal light speed.
Or i could be looking at anchovies again..
I look at the whole immortality thing in mlp from a biology perspective and not a mythological one. Celestia and Luna are not gods that just happen to look like allicorns. They are allicorns. As such their bodies are no different from Cadence and Twilight once she gets changed. Twilight and Cadence are not pegacorns or unicorns or pegasi with horns or wings grafted on. As such their bodies should behave the same as Celestia or Luna.
If it is magic that is keeping them young, Twilight and the mane 6 would be ageless too. They beat Tirek with a magic attack more powerfull than his. Tirek had all the magic of Equestria in him including Celestia and Luna. So it goes to show that they can channel more magic than the princesses being bonded with the tree of harmony.
No Luna this is a much more probable cause of why ponies have not taken to the stars.
"There was no technology that could do that, at least not to her knowledge and as a Princess of Canterlot and now the Crystal Empire she knew all kinds of things that most ponies weren’t meant to know about." The suppression of ideas and technologies would kill progress. Although in this situation I admit that the research Sombra did might not have any benefits to society. With magic, technology would just develop differently having magical solutions instead of other solutions to problems. What I think is that Equestrians are just a younger race that has not have as much conflict to put research under a pressure cooker.
Good chapter, probably more of a info dump that what some prefer but I like them in moderation. I wonder what Luna and Celestia would think about the whole situation if they knew David's ship was constantly being updated about everything and in the event of David's death would automatically return to humanity. It just makes sense for it to be set up that way since normally David goes to worlds that can be incredibly dangerous and even on non dangerous worlds accidents happen.
At some point I started imagining the word "Shinning" being said by Sean Connery and I haven't stopped giggling since.
While this is more a minor gripe then anything else. Celestia and Luna would be immortal. If they cant die due to time but can still die to damage then their still immortal. If nothing fazed them theyd be eternal. Still an enjoyable chapter as usual.

The word "immortal" literally means that they cannot die. in- + mortalis → immortalis = someone/thing who never dies.
Using the word "ageless" to describe someone who is still mortal but just doesn't grow older is perfectly reasonable.

Okay fixed that, I have no idea how that happened or why my stupid spell checker didn't catch it.
7350979 Yeah that was how I saw it especially since most 'immortal' characters in fictions usually end up dying anyway. Highlander, God of War where actual gods are killed off, most vampire movies, etc. So I wanted to use 'ageless' for that very reason as I'm pretty sure Luna and Celestia can be killed.
7350321 Mostly I used this idea because I thought it would fit the world best as they don't have artificial gravity yet, so I used things like Babylon 5 and the Gundam universal century for inspiration after looking up that kind of colony style.
Extra points for referencing Buck Rodgers and Thunderbirds.
7351408 Yeah had to go with the classics on this.
7354374 I do often wonder how Twilight's parents as well as the parents of all the Mane 6 feel at times what their kids get up to.
The title princess is actually symbolic to my reasoning Because they share the power weather then having a absolute. The title of Queen implies a position of absolute authority also when you consider the full titles of each Princess they each serve as a representation of aspect. Whether in the Greek gods which were thought of as the origins of these things the priestesses of equestria serve as representation of the aspect itself weather then it's origin.
As for the long lifespan, although Alicorn's do have a longer lifespan than others the reason for the seemingly immortality was as I theorized (and later confirmed in the Journal of the two sisters) linked to there connection to the celestial bodies. The simplest way to put it is that each act as a power source that constantly rejuvenates their bodies.
If memory serves, `Tia and Luna were both born unicorns. The only born Alicorn on record is Flurry Heart.
Why do I feel that this paragraph is highly important? Think about it Luna could unfortunately influence her planet with it abandoning magic in favor of science. That just makes me sad.
no one should just accept magic as an answer. It just means that ponies do not really know what it is.

That's not exactly 'canon' anymore as the show has already gone against other official books and stuff unfortunately.

No. "Magic" is a perfectly valid name for a perfectly valid science, in this context. It's not an explanation, because it doesn't actually carry any information - but in-context (ponies living on Equus), it does function well, because everypony knows what 'magic' is and means.
I mean, think about it. You could just as easily try to explain something by saing "chemistry". Is it an explanation? No. Does it work in-context? Yes, because everyone that's been to school knows what "chemistry" means: you say 'chemistry' - I think properties, reactions, processes, products.
Same thing with 'magic': Celestia says 'magic' - Twilight thinks thaumaturgy, processes, equations, spells, the works.
And don't forget - they have researchers working on magical theories (hell, Twilight is one of 'em), they have schools that teach this stuff in an organized curriculum. It's a force that affects reality around them, and it can be trained. It's a valid science.
The only problem with the word "magic" exists for humans, because we've always heard the word "magic" used to explain either the unexplained (which was later explained), or tricks against perception - sort of a go-to word for "I don't know what it really is". For ponies of Equus, "magic" is as real as "physics" is for humans.
Besides, there's a lot of room for incredulity on both sides. I mean, Equus seems to be a unique world, and uniquely affected by some up-to-now undiscovered biological force that permeates the entire thing, living beings and all. A number of basic laws of physics and chemistry don't seem to work on Equus, or work in ways you wouldn't expect them to (with the exception of the Everfree). As such, ponies will probably have a hard time coming to grips with the reality that the rest of the Universe doesn't work like Equus.
In fact, I have this nagging feeling that magic doesn't work outside Equus. Think about it: humans are colonizing the galaxy, they have ships that travel everywhere and study everything. That means that each Pathfinder-class ship has sensors and facilities to analyze everything known to man.
The fact that no piece of David's scientific equipment can properly analyze the magical forces of Equus is evidence enough that this form of energy was not previously detected anywhere else. Anywhere else. Let that sink in. If ponies rely on magic to function, there's a good probability that they wouldn't be able to, if taken off of Equus.
