Umbral's folloy was simple, he spent so much time planning revenge against Celestia he got tunnel vision and went for the wrong goal. he never saw the changes in Equestria. He never saw Celestia's plans for reclaiming Luna, he assumed she had given up on their sister, given up on harmony and family, when she had infarct learned more about it. His goal should have been to get Luna back, to free her from Nightmare Moon, but he let his anger blind him.
