In relating to Scootaloo being gay, that honestly has nothing to do with her upbringing (as I firmly believe sexuality is innate anyway), she's just gay. Well, more accurately she's likely bisexual, and just doesn't spend much time exploring heterosexual feelings. I tend to consider the ratio something like 90% of Earth ponies are straight, 90% of unicorns are gay, and 90% of Pegasi are bisexual with some wiggle room therein. This is primarily because (and I'm going to get expositive here for a bit) Earth ponies can't reproduce without both genders, so they evolved and developed a culture focused on reproductive partnerships. Unicorns can reproduce magically, and while they can have heterosexual relationships, they tend towards the same-sex partnerships because typically unicorns of the same gender tend to mesh better emotionally and socially. Pegasi are impulsive and nonchalant, and tend not to concern themselves with propriety or cultural norms. They're fairly well-known for having multiple partners of both genders, as well as non-ponies (think RD & Gilda). That's not to say that can't or don't settle down, because they often do, but not as young as Earth ponies and not as permanently as unicorns. Of course, the younger ponies of today are losing their cultural identities, and Earth ponies are starting to sway towards the homosexual lifestyle more, and vice versa for unicorns. That said, Octavia and Silver Spoon are still unusual, but they were both raised in cosmopolitan settings, leaving a lot more room for flexibility.
And as long as you keep asking, I'll keep explaining, because I like my headcanon. I want everyone else to like it, too!
More? moooooore...
Scootagenius needs to cool her heels a bit...
Oh my god, the tension between Silver Spoon and Scootaloo is awful. By which I mean amazing, unbearable, and I would gladly eat up more of it in a heartbeat. Their failings and insecurities are so compelling, and I can't help but hope that they eventually start actually trusting each other.
That being said, I'm really, really scared for what could happen if Tiara gets the plans for the Dash off cf Silver. It's entirely realistic but also really sad that Diamond Tiara's able to manipulate her like that. Anyhows, Amazing chapter (as always), and I'm excited for whatever happens next.
at least daimond well get called out on this right? cheerilee isn't that malicious/sadistic she'd let DT get away with her plan?
What a place to make a typo… "square" of the hypotenuse, man.

2721769 Your Headcanon comforms to mine! what are the odds? btw, I love this fic! Ive been waiting for this update since may! Also, No Longer Lost really helped shape up some undefined ideas I had floating around my head about scootaloo. also, I kind of consider your fics to be Canon.
PM me a reply?

In general I find judging a person (or pony) based on their socioeconomic status is counterproductive and frequently flawed. The idea that someone's personality is inherently determined by their wealth is deeply seated, leading to the concept of 'big bad corporations' and evil genius billionaires (like Lex Luthor), but it relies on the assumption of archetypes that severely narrow the range of potential characters and character flaws available to the writer. I try hard to avoid allowing my characters to trip into these archetypes without some level of intent on their part, because it seems like a cop-out to simply say, "Filthy Rich is filthy rich, and that makes him a bad guy." I like villains who look like nice guys from afar, and saints who seem villainous on the surface. Of course, there's a continuum there that is fun to dabble in--think Bumble Bee from No Longer Lost, who seems spiteful and rude at first, but turns out to simply be putting up a front because his job requires a certain level of fortitude of will.
In this case, the intent is not to paint rich ponies as necessarily mean by nature, but to give a glimpse of what makes certain ponies in certain classes turn out the way they do. In Silver Spoon's case, her home life is unsatisfying and generally uninteractive (as we'll see in the next chapter), leaving her as something of a blank slate to be imprinted on. There is more to her story, as there always is, but suffice it to say that whoever she used to be, and whatever happened to bring her to a point of emotional and social tabula rasa, the only influence she had at that formative period in her life was Diamond Tiara, who is herself an interesting experiment. Her home life should be much more fulfilling than Spoon's, as Spoon herself will occasionally attest, but there is something missing there that nothing can really fill, leaving Tiara a damaged soul, the sort who only finds solace in schadenfreude (the trope 'misery loves company' inevitably comes to mind).
In neither case is their wealth a factor in their personalities, it's simply a tool with which they each impose their personality on the world around them. Tiara chooses to be elitist and arrogant, and her family's status makes that easier. Spoon wants to be Tiara's best friend, and because of Tiara's self-imposed social rules (money equals status, et al), her wealth is the only thing making that possible. To that end, it would be incongruous to suggest Scootaloo or any of her friends could be similarly close to Tiara, because while Rarity may be quite wealthy (and is, in this continuity), Sweetie Belle's social status is tied to her parents, not her sister, and Sweet Apple Acres, while self-sustaining, is not a huge money machine, leaving Apple Bloom somewhat lacking in disposable income.
Scootaloo is a unique case, because though her family is quite wealthy, they tend to save and spend it on less obvious things rather than flaunting their money with large houses, carriages, and the like. Even Scootaloo is probably unaware how much her parents make, although the sheer abundance of phenomenally expensive textbooks, toolkits, and similar advantages her parents provide her without questions should give her some indication that they're not exactly struggling. For what it's worth, the Royal Academy of Canterlot for Engineering is a supremely expensive private institution, and the fact that her parents haven't even flinched at her assertion that she wants to attend is probably quite telling for her.
In the end, the point of this story--and others I write--is to try to redefine archetypes like this so that characters who seem one way at first blush end up much different--and much deeper than you may initially expect. I hope to pull that off and give some less-popular characters a fresh new image.
2721769 That... is a headcanon that I am going to accept. Right now. Well done.
I'm actually really liking this story on Scoots and Spoon. It's interesting to watch them interact as teens and not younger fillies, and how their older minds are as they try and work together. I can't help but wonder what Spoon would've/will think if/when Scoots reveals that she did make that mistake on purpose.
2799231 When I said I had something against rich people, I didn't mean like I hate them because they're rich. I meant I dislike, not hate, people who show off their money(in a large manner), use their power to solve problems, and people who get whatever they want because they have money/power. I don't mean to start a large argument, but I just thought I should clarify.
wait a minute i just reread this fic and i noticed something interesting
what if DT is doing something similar? She does the schoolwork for SS, thus SS, doesn't do it and doesn't learn, which means she stays "stupid" and still fells in dept to DT, in response she sticks around DT.

Nope. It's a fox mon from Legend of the Five Rings.

Except, of course, the piles of money they have.
Of course, if money makes no difference to you, I'd be happy to help you get rid of yours. Let me know if that sounds good!

Somehow I did not get a notification about this. Hm.
Well, I didn't realize. Thank you for letting me know.

Well, I suppose that depends on what your definition of a "plus" is. If you mean she just happens to fall into a situation where her disability benefits her or turns out to be great, then no, that's not what's going to happen. However, she's smart enough to know that her best plan is to find something she likes where her disability either doesn't hurt her, or does benefit her. As has been mentioned, she possesses all the heightened reflexes and sharpened senses of a pegasus, but has the strength and endurance of an earth pony. The only thing she can't do is fly. It just so happens that's the only thing she wants to do. Her only real option is to find a way to fly that doesn't rely on her having a light frame. There aren't many, but she's smart, and she's already thought about it a lot. She has plans.
Ah I see whats going on. In grade school Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon had the upper hoof because the CMC were still blank flanks. BUT after getting their marks, Scoot, and Sweetie Belle turned the tides and became the bullies, with Silver Spoon their only target, because she was timid, vulnerable, and slower on the uptake where as Diamond Tiara's only faults had to do with her attitude and she was too confident in herself.
So in short, poor Spoony bore the backlash in High School for both her and DT's prior bullying.
"She's still dumb as a post." was Scootaloo's exact words even after their truce. So Diamond Tiara is correct to assume nothing has changed, yet.
Poor Spoony.
2721769 That's an interesting concept. Personally, I'd always assumed that they were primarily bisexual like humans are when not tied down by culture.
2799603 Actually Silver Spoon even said in an earlier chapter that Diamond Tiara had helped her through a "rough time" when she was a filly and had been the "only person there for her", thus making her feel like she owed her.
I love that line because it's basically Diamond Tiara unknowingly outing herself for what she's done.

That is a pretty awesome headcanon.
In your own headcanon, how does herds of the past, and forced monogamy of the present. Along with a 1.85 Female to 1 Male split effect the above head canon? [of the 752 ponies on the show shown. 488 were female / fillies, and 264 were male [Foreground, Background, and unnamed scenery filler ponies]. Which is good in all in a herd setting where a few stallions lived with a bunch of mares and matings were less monogamous compared to what was needed to further the species. But what does the 35% do that can't find a male to mate with? Do friends open up little mini-herds or something?]
What the...
I've had more than half of the songs on my Pandora be love songs of various kinds the entire time I've been reading this story.
I think this story has song magic.
Oh Silver Spoon....
Scootaloo!!! Didn't Rainbow Dash teach you loyalty?
