Author note:
Let's try something different - a short chapter.
Manehattan
USS Wisconsin
The wooden pier groaned under the force of the ship mildly bumping into it. As long as the waves didn’t do anything strange, it would probably hold. Twilight Sparkle had informed Mittal that the tides in Equestria were very predictable.
Ponies of all kinds had come down to the water to have a look at the ship. It was quite an attraction. There were tall buildings in Manehattan, even some that could be classified as skyscrapers, but Wisconsin dwarfed them all.
The resemblance to Manhattan was unsettling. Combined with the inexplicably English-speaking animals and other details Mittal had noticed, it was beginning to seem like they had arrived in some bizarre version of Earth, rather than a different planet.
Maybe he could ask Twilight about it later. For the moment, there was too much to do in preparation to leave.
Field Marshall Sparkle came aboard with the ponies she had picked for her staff. Most of them were members of the Equestrian military. The colorful ponies that were with her before were not present. Mittal asked about them.
“The six of us are the Elements of Harmony,” she told him, briefly explaining the purpose of the Elements. “We’re all really great friends, but we had a long talk and decided that Harmony is not something that would really help us with the necessary chaos of war.”
“Where did they go?”
“Applejack and Rarity are with the supply group, in food and clothing respectively. Pinky is in the planning and logistics division. Fluttershy is helping with the hospital. Rainbow joined the Sky Corps.”
Ponies seemed to be naturally good at organization. Their cutie marks, the symbols that every pony received, easily told them what they were good at. With each pony doing a job they were suited to, things seemed to run more smoothly than humanity could manage.
Mittal had heard a few stallions refer to their marks as “stud stamps.” He couldn’t blame them. If he had a tattoo on his posterior, he wouldn’t call it a cutie mark either.
Joining Twilight were Zecora, and a small purple dragon that Twilight introduced as Spike, her assistant. Prior to the introduction, Mittal had assumed that all dragons were bad news. It seemed like heritage was not discriminated against in Equestria.
The Manehattan harbor began to fill up with vessels of all kinds. Ponies had no need for fish, so they seemed to be different types of boats than a human port would have. Many were repurposed civilian craft that had been volunteered for the cause.
Everything came together much more quickly than Mittal would have thought. Things ran on a smaller scale than in the human world, and events were able to happen faster.
Wisconsin was tied to the pier for two days. In that time, masses of pony volunteers arrived. Mittal was wary of sending untrained civilians, but Twilight informed him that “volunteer” was the Equestrian equivalent of army reserves. Perhaps not quite as effective as a standing army, but able to respond on short notice.
Joining the ponies were crowds of buffalo, sheep, donkeys, and just about every other creature Mittal had ever seen before. Twilight showed her prowess at logistics by arranging transportation, food, and supplies for them all. It looked to be no easy task.
The night before scheduled departure, Mittal took a walk along the waterfront. He’d been to New York City before, and his eyes kept picking out similarities between it and Manehattan. Maybe his parallel universe theory wasn’t so crazy after all. Were the dragons some kind of equivalent to Saddam Hussein’s regime? There was a scary idea. Mittal decided to think about other things.
Alcohol did not seem to exist in any large quantity in Equestria. Some of the sailors probably would have figured out a way to smuggle it aboard if it did. He understood the need to relax occasionally, but going into battle buzzed was not a great idea.
Mittal glanced at the stars. Despite being in a city, there wasn’t much light pollution. He didn’t immediately recognize any constellations, although there were three collinear stars that rather resembled Orion’s Belt. Perhaps the clear skies made more stars than usual visible, crowding the night sky and obscuring the familiar constellations. And what was to say the ship hadn’t also been transported across a distance, ending up somewhere else on the planet that had a view of the sky from a different angle? Speaking of-
Mittal shook his head. It was all right to speculate, but he had no facts to back any of those ideas. He decided to go back and get some sleep. The next day was going to be long.
Rising before the sun, Mittal ran one more check to make sure every sailor and every piece of equipment was ready. He consulted the supply department about their provisions.
Under standard rations, there was enough food left onboard for perhaps a week. Mittal was thankful that the supply officer had been keeping careful records. Wisconsin would normally have a stores ship in the battle group to resupply from, and running out of something would be no big deal. Mittal discreetly asked the galley staff to cut back slightly and make the raw ingredients they had stretch as far as possible. The ponies were happy to supply fresh fruit and vegetables to replenish their stocks, which helped quite a bit.
Fuel was another limited commodity, although that wouldn’t become a problem for a few weeks. Battleships carried not only their own fuel, but often refueled the destroyers in the battle group. There was quite a lot in reserve.
By midmorning, all the smaller boats had put to sea to give the battleship room to maneuver in the harbor. Mittal had learned that the Equestrian Sea was actually more of a strait than an ocean. Relatively speaking, it wouldn’t take very long to cross.
As Wisconsin pulled away, the crowd that had come to see them off cheered.

You should submit this to Equestria Daily.
This is damn cool. Keep it up.

Dunno how. I'm new to this whole thing.
Yes, as mentioned above, when i went to read the first 4 chapters all at once, by the end i was on the edge of my seat! Please try and make the chapters a bit longer than this, we don't mind if they only come out every few days, or even a week or so apart from one another...
And besides, why aren't those boys at their mess? If i was about to go to war, that's where i'd be...
Also, rainbow dash approves.
>>totallynotabrony
Its easy just say "look at my fic, my fic is amazing"
and then they will give it a lick.
If it tastes just like raisins, you're in!
227830 Just go to EQD and go to the submit section. It will give you instructions for submiting there.
227830
There are instructions on EQD for how to submit a story. It's not hard.
Although frankly, I don't think it's worth the hassles. I write stories for fun, and I find that dealing with EQD's vague and arbitrary rejection notices, and playing guessing games with their pre-readers, is stress that I don't need. FIMFiction is way better set up for handling the fanfic side of things anyhow.
You shouldn't bother with shorter chapters, try going with 2.5-4,000 word chapters, or more if you feel up to it.
awesome.
but i've read Fallout: Equestria and Fallout: Equestria Project Horizons twice respectivly. Project Horizons is longer than Fallout: Equestria, and i think Project Horizons just hit around 500,000 words or something.
That wasn't too bad for a short chapter.
When'd you write this chapter?
MOARtars reloaded, sir.
FIRE!!!
Direct Hit!

wait, I thought most big warships were nuclear powered?
Potential future scene:
Mittal: "I see your dragon and raise you a 16 inch, 1 ton shell to the face. Your move."
228325
Modern aircraft carriers and ballistic subs are, but the Wisconsin is an Iowa-class battleship of late WW2 vintage -- with many systems upgraded later, but never converted to using nuclear power.
Man. This is too fast-paced.
I don't want to be a jerk or anything but don't battleships, carries and destroyers work on nuclear power and not your ever day fuel.... Just sayin
228911
Apparently not. Check here on Wikipedia; according to that article, the US Navy fields some eleven nuclear-powered carriers and an unspecified number of nuclear submarines. No nuclear destroyers or cruisers, and to my knowledge no battleship has ever been built or refitted with a nuclear reactor -- mainly because battleships went out of fashion before the technology actually became available, anyway. That the US decided to retain a few in the first place (when everybody else was scrapping theirs) and even reactivate and upgrade them in the 80s can be safely considered a luxury.
The first four chapters were very, very rushed. You glossed over some obvious, glaring holes in diplomacy and just decided to lump them into the coalition. Celestia was out of character in her willingness to just accept assistance from an unknown faction with a dubious story, and Mittal seems right as rain with the fact that there are other sentient species and even whole other worlds out there, completely undocumented by humanity. Deciding to throw his men's lives into the budding war without deep contemplation of the repercussions doesn't seem something a military man of his rank would do. I also think you're ignoring some very interesting interaction potential between the crew of the ship and the ponies of Equestria.
That being said, I do enjoy the idea. With a little (ok, a lot) more substance, you could have a very nice story on your hands. Your grammar is good and sentence structure is fine. Describing more about how the humans and ponies feel when talking would help get across the emotional feel of the scene. You've got a good beginning down, you just need to take it slower and fill out the chapters more.
Tracking.
228911
Wisconsin was built before the atom bomb existed. The US did build some nuclear destroyers and cruisers, but all were decomissioned by the mid '90s.
All current US carriers and submarines are nuclear.
228447
Is this a real ship?
229221
USS Wisconsin (BB-64). Quite real and still around as a museum ship today.
As an aside, if somebody absolutely wanted to write a story involving an actual nuclear-powered battleship, they certainly could -- it just couldn't plausibly come from our present-day or earlier Earth but would have to hail from some suitable parallel universe itself.
Ugh, you're making things shorter?
Well at least if you submit this to EqD someone might point you in the direction you need to go to start making this story less wonky.
Not quite a fan of the shorter chapter but still pleased with what I saw. Also, I am glad that you covered the fuel aspect. I had been wondering about it as I read the previous chapters.
227970 lol i dont c how that is relevant to this
229443
Fallout:Equestria deals with the prospect of war coming to a world where violence is nearly unknown, and uses heartwrenchingly realistic reactions from all factions to bring the world from a sugary utopia to a 1984 parallel. Each of the Mane Cast are slowly corrupted by the concepts and effects of war as it affected our world.
Pinkie Pie, the head of the Ministry of Morale, is so desperate to make everyone happy and forget about the world's troubles turns to constant surveillance and drugs to control crime and emotions respectively, stopping at nothing to know everypony without exception through violation of privacy.
Applejack, head of the Ministry of Wartime Technology, is so desperate to protect her nation through what technology the Earth Ponies can offer, ramps up bailouts and bribes to corporations, driving corruption and a vast arms trade which begins destroying Equestria from the inside out.
Rarity, head of the Ministry of Image, is so obsessed with maintaining good public opinion and image that her division becomes a propaganda machine, censoring all sorts of media and taking control of the newly opened airwaves.
Twilight, head of the Ministry of Arcane Sciences, is so desperate to find a way of gaining an upper hand that she stoops to biological and magical experimentation, creating a weapon with side effects that last centuries.
Fluttershy, head of the Ministry of Peace, is so desperate for everyone to stop fighting that she creates the ultimate tool of peace, dooming the world.
Rainbow, head of the Ministry of Awesome, is so focused on doing what she wants to do rather than running a ministry that she unwittingly creates a separate faction in a world war, leading to a decision which forever changes the face of the world.
By allowing Equestria to be affected by war, and through the naivety of six ponies who thought they could save the world through Harmony alone, they unwittingly caused the end of the world, and the beginning of the Wasteland of Fallout:Equestria.
By addressing these very real effects of war on not just the economy and politics, but also the very psychology and moral beliefs of Equestria, Fallout:Equestria presents a horrifying yet realistic view of exactly why friendship and harmony is so desperately focused on. This story, compelling though it may be, seems unwilling to explore the implications of war and its affect on the psychology and society of Equestria and the surrounding nations, as well as the cultural, social and legal differences between military personnel from our world and the peaceful citizens of Equestria. It is because of this that many readers are incredulous at the speed with which these decisions are made, and even that these decisions are made at all.
How would a creature, who had never even heard of war and bloodshed before, react to a fellow citizen suddenly losing limbs in a splatter of blood and flesh whilst screaming for mother and goddess? How would she react to hearing news of hundreds and thousands of fellow creatures dying daily in skirmishes, and an enemy that won't stop fighting when you scream for mercy? How would she react to the very real possibility that she may die the next day? That she may never see her family again? That her entire nation could be wiped off the face of the planet? And yet, that the enemies also have feelings, and families, and children of their own? How would she react when her lover returns from the horrors of the battlefield, a haunted look on her face, a changed mare suffering from nightmares every waking moment of her life? How would society adapt as newer and newer technology flows from the military into the streets, and suddenly disgruntled citizens can kill each other with a simple flick of a hoof to make a point?
These are horrifying questions, but they are questions that need answering if bringing War to Equestria is to be considered. Celestia may be a goddess, but I doubt ANY of the inhabitants of this world are anywhere NEAR ready to face the threat presented, nor the fearsome power and coldhearted ruthlessness of the Human military. Those softspoken, moralistic men sound awesome when they're talking to you in a friendly manner, but I'm sure opinions would change when they see a Dragon, a father of children and a companion to his own kind, screaming in agony, fear and confusion as he finds his vital organs blasted to bits by merciless shells and explosives.
Sorry if I seem grim, but WAR IS HELL, and anyone who refuses to consider this probably should think twice before writing about it, no offence to the author.
... The comments section is scaring me...

This.... is gold. I have NEVER seen someone point that out, nor reference the fact that a stallion might be even vaguely uncomfortble with their rump maks being called "cutie" marks. You have won the internet.
Words cannot express how overjoyed I am that something like this doesn't seem to have caught on and gods willing never will. It just feels really sexually insecure and I think the generic brony hate on M/M shipping showed that more than enough.
256210 Which is why it is lucky for Equiis (the fannon name of the planet Equestria is on) that the universe got drunk and brough Humanity to them. It is lucky because war, death, terrorism, and vulgar stuff such as porn and profanity is a every day occurrence for Earth. Every time I push a key on my laptop a soldiers brain is spread all over his best friends and a child dies of mal-nurrishment. But it isn't that bothering because I and the rest of the world population is very use to this reality. Unlike the ponies who would probably loose their mindes, leading to their worlds destruction.
It is unsettling how if you copy the cold war and paste it over a different civilization things would end up very differently. Ponies in the Fallout:Equestria universe were not mature (for lack of better terms) enough to handle it.
Again leading to my point that it is damn lucky for them a Battleship showed up. Especially an American battleship that has crew members from Vietnam. The vietnam vetrans being aboard is lucky because they are obviously the ones who didn't loose their minds because of it meaning they can pretty much handle anything and the American part because American Battleships are historically damned powerfull. Especially the refited Iowa class battleship.
But yea, the Ponies would be dead in this universe if we hadn't of shown up.
2154345 Dude, you replied to a comment that is a year old.
Still, nice to know someone still reads my primitive stories.
2154377 I am replying to your 10 week old comment hehe. I like the 'Primative' story.
Sounds like Operation Dynamo.
Interesting fact, Charles Lightoller, the second officer of the Titanic, was a part of Operation Dynamo, also known as the Dunkirk Evacuation, or The Miracle of Dunkirk. His personal motor yacht, Sundowner, was one of the "little ships." Sundowner is now preserved.
228325 Nope, the Iowas are still steam. The nuclear ships are also steam powered, in a way. The reactor is used to create steam, which in turn spins a turbine, spinning the shafts. The Iowas use boilers burning bunker fuel, which has the consistency of tar when warm, and cement when cold. Oil burning steam locomotives used the same stuff, a flavor known as Bunker C, the bottom of the refining barrel in terms of oil
The Wisconsin is out to kick some ass! 58,000 tons of diplomacy comin' at you, dragons. If I were you, I'd duck.
But apparently going into battle high as a kite on PCP is genius!
mmmmm
Yeeeeahhh...that's just Twilight, actually. Unfortunately for the ponies, xenophobes, friends do not make. Unless you're the Imperium, but you can do a lot of things when you have the bigger army.

You profile picture matches your first sentence perfectly
I love it
Heeheehee, short but... this is going places, another well done chapter.
Gaaah I am hyped for the battle, hehe
