Like many people, I was rather dreading a rehash of "Baby Cakes". Like many people, I'm happy to be wrong. I've long been on the side of the 'Blueblood' argument in favor of giving him the benefit of the doubt; venturing the guess that he just has a keen instinct for picking out the fops and then acts like a boor to scare them off. Rarity was being a fop at the Gala. This was before I rewatched the season one finale the other day. Having done so, I can now confidently say I was right; his behavior toward Rarity was an act.

I've still only been able to watch this once, so consider this a provisional rating. It was touching and sweet and interesting and all that, though I don't go along with the "Best Episode Ever!" crowd; "A Royal Problem" remains S7's best ep. Yup, there's a show I just got introduced to the other week. And I LOVE it. I'll provide hints as to what it is:

1. It's animated
2. It's a mystery show.
3. Its name is the location it takes place in.
4. There's codes at the end of each episode.
5. The villain is a demon of chaos.

That was something different -- instead of last week's action adventure, we got a much more domestically-focused episode, reminiscent in some ways of the early years of the show. It was particularly nice to get so much of a look at the secondary cast -- Carrot Top spoke, which will please someone... -- and there was even a callback to the series pilot late on. Also, that Rarity look. ★★★

I'm a bit surprised this one has stirred up so much controversy. I didn't really think it was any more startling on the "digs at certain parts of the fandom" front than "Stranger Than Fan Fiction" last year. More importantly, it was also heaps of fun, even (especially!) when one or two of the jabs cut a little close to home. The song was okay, with a good message but a meh melody. The episode's ending was a bit unfocused, but oh well. Also, Fluttershy. And Rarity. ★★★/★★★★, leaning four.

Terramar: "I have to choose soon. Every other griff my age already knows where they belong. I'm still not sure." This suggests to me that, however obvious the episode's resolution might be to us, it isn't obvious to the hippogriffs themselves, and that they do expect to have to choose in such a situation. Maybe there's some cultural reason why splitting environments hasn't been a thing up until now, but that's pure speculation.

A reasonably entertaining episode, though not quite as entertaining as the last two. I've never really found Sunburst all that interesting. Starlight I do like, and actually I think she's possibly the season's most consistently fun character. The plot was so-so but executed well enough, but I wasn't that fond of either parent. I know we weren't supposed to be, but they didn't really grab me. So, a solid episode rather than an amazing one, which means ★★★ again.

This one's going to be a(nother) base-breaker. I found it interesting, but with flaws, some more annoying than others. New characters are variable. Is this the Pony we knew in S1? Nope. Is it still fun? Yep. Songs were okay without being classics. This is a provisional three, as I need more time to process everything but don't want to leave this blog post too long. Biggest complaint: where was Cheerilee? ★★★
