Spoilers for those who haven't seen the finale yet.
Okay, so I've finished season 8, and I've got to say, it surprised me. For such an old show (especially one that's had difficulties with executive oversight stepping on the team's toes frequently) season 8 still managed to not only have some great episodes, but some solid characters and even more interesting lessons and concepts. But out of all of those, the one that shocked me the most, and ended up being my favorite character of the season?
Gallus.

Yes, there are still annoying continuity issues. Yes, the "here's Fluttershy going over the top" bit is still overlong. But honestly? It was more fun second time through. I think this might be because on initial viewing I was on tenterhooks waiting for the bits when Rarity and Fluttershy bonded in some adorable way -- and, except right at the end, I didn't get them. I felt so disappointed. Second time through, I knew I wasn't going to get that and so it bothered me less when it didn't arrive.
Can't say much about this one without spoilers, but I thought it mixed rather too much cringe humour (even for me) with some really interesting character development. This three-star rating is definitely one of the more provisional ones, but it may take until much later in the season (or even series) to firm it up entirely. ★★★ ★★★★Bumped up to four on a rewatch!
I just watched the Season 8 premiere.
First off, the things I liked.
I love the new characters. I think they are written really well, as they reminded me of my own students. I'm especially fond of the Changeling girl and Gallous, the Griffin boy.
Also, I wanna see more of Grandpa Gruff.
I also like the concept of them opening a school and I'm looking forward to what they're going to do with it.
Now, the cons.
Another entertaining-but-not-amazing episode. I really liked Starlight in this, and I thought Limestone was good fun as well. Pinkie and Maud were generally good but iffy in the first act, and I was disappointed that Marble was reduced to a couple of mumbles. Not one of Nick Confalone's best, not one of his work. An okay episode. ★★★
(Oh and yeah, The Danger Within is still coming along. Slowly, too slowly, but it is.)
Another busy week of work and now another ep of MLP. And a Spike one too. Let’s have a look;
One of the best of Season 8. And my boy got wings!
Hope you all have a nice Sunday.
An episode that was funny in places, but was also tiresome and repetitive. Pretty much a rehash of an earlier episode, and this one also annoyed me for trampling on show canon. A real disappointment. ★★, just for the amusement value.
Man, I completely forgot that S8 of MLP started today. Plus the fact that Season 8(!) of Pony just sounds unreal in itself. I don't think I have to summarize the plot, because everyone reading this probably saw it and many others already do this. So, going straight to the point, I liked it. Season 8 definitely has great potential. Behind the break more in-depth and random thoughts on the two-parter.
Terramar: "I have to choose soon. Every other griff my age already knows where they belong. I'm still not sure." This suggests to me that, however obvious the episode's resolution might be to us, it isn't obvious to the hippogriffs themselves, and that they do expect to have to choose in such a situation. Maybe there's some cultural reason why splitting environments hasn't been a thing up until now, but that's pure speculation.
A reasonably entertaining episode, though not quite as entertaining as the last two. I've never really found Sunburst all that interesting. Starlight I do like, and actually I think she's possibly the season's most consistently fun character. The plot was so-so but executed well enough, but I wasn't that fond of either parent. I know we weren't supposed to be, but they didn't really grab me. So, a solid episode rather than an amazing one, which means ★★★ again.
This one's going to be a(nother) base-breaker. I found it interesting, but with flaws, some more annoying than others. New characters are variable. Is this the Pony we knew in S1? Nope. Is it still fun? Yep. Songs were okay without being classics. This is a provisional three, as I need more time to process everything but don't want to leave this blog post too long. Biggest complaint: where was Cheerilee? ★★★
A pretty entertaining episode this week. Very predictable at times, but the journey was fun enough that knowing the destination didn't really matter. I'm not generally a great fan of romance in FiM, but Big Mac and Sugar Belle are a cute couple. The CMC subplot was amusing, too. ★★★, but a high one. Update: upgraded to ★★★★ after a second watch.
I just read some interesting headcanons presented by Winter Quill in their most recent blogpost, and I decided to share my own headcanons as well:
Character development? Pah, who needs a silly thing like that? Thank Celestia for the Student Six. And Fluttershy. Because the stuff with AJ and Dash was pretty dire. Watch "Fall Weather Friends" again instead. It's basically this, but better. ★★
