    Season 4 Retrospective · 4:35pm May 10th, 2014

Warning: Season-wide spoilers abound. Proceed with caution.

No, I'm not doing another poem. There's just too much to talk about, and it can't fit into a string of four-line stanzas. Especially this frankly awesome finale.

So, another season has come and gone. We had some good times, didn't we? Granted, it wasn't perfect, but hey, what is? Now that all is said and done, what have we learned?

We learned that Twilight Sparkle is the most humble princess Equestria has ever known, yet she still wants to play her part and contribute. It's as if the analyst community's biggest pet peeve of Twilight's new title not being recognized was building up to something. They're gonna have a field day with this one; I know it.

Three Year Anniversary Special: Writing Retrospective + AMA · 10:32am Feb 4th, 2015

As of today, I have been a member of this site for three years. Three years! That’s older than some of my relatives. My use of this site has outlasted my enjoyment of the show. To celebrate this “milestone”, I thought I would look back on some of the things I published on this account. Examine what they taught me and how they have held up to time. Further, I thought I would analyze some of the themes and concepts that repeat across multiple stories. I always enjoy such analyses of other author’s works, and I certainly do have some noticeable quirks in that regard. Finally, as an extra bonus, feel free to ask me questions in the comments section. Be it about writing, me, my cat, go ahead. I welcome comments and questions all the time, of course. Having an explicit avenue for it, however, often makes the act of asking less daunting. :raritywink:

Dwell on the Past · 3:49am January 1st

As 2016 dies its slow, 24-hour long death, I thought I'd look back on what I've accomplished this year:

    • 20 published stories
    • 11 published Dueling Keyboards shorts
    • 8 Writeoff entires, one of which won its contest
    • 1 newly published minific collection
    • 1 newly created AU with associated group and several other contributing authors
    • Over 100,000 words written
    • 43 Friendship is Card Games blogs
    • Hundreds of cards created
    • Hundreds of new followers
    • 1 college degree
    • 1 car
    • 1 job

Don't get me wrong, there has been a lot to be upset about this year, from the acid bath of the election to celebrity deaths coming in thirties. But it's nice to take a moment to look back on the positives, and they're definitely there to be found.

At the time of posting this, there's about 75 minutes of this year left in my time zone. Here's hoping 2017 will have at least as much to celebrate and far less to mourn.

Know Your Mare: A Look Back. · 6:09pm January 1st

Three-thousand likes. That's a lot of people, honestly. I don't really remember the exact day KYM was created, but I know it was in the early 2014's, and it was on a different site. I came to FiMfiction with four stories in my portfolio: Elements of the Past, Former Etiquette (which I only learned today was spelled wrong for over three years), Scratch the Octave, and -of course- Know Your Mare.

Let's Talk About "The Mare Who Once Lived on the Moon" (Chp 1-3) · 12:37am April 26th

If you haven’t read this story before reading this, you’re doing it wrong. So, go do it right by reading the story and then come back!

Note: This is my longest follow-up to date, so I'm going to be dividing it into sections with three chapters a day. I'll be doing separate blog posts for each day. So, let's get this party started shall we?

Good golly, it’s been too long since I’ve done one of these. First and foremost, the following will spoil the entire story for you. So, if you haven’t read this story yet, go away and read the story first!

Let's Talk About "The Mare Who Once Lived on the Moon" (Chp 13 & 14) · 7:02am April 30th

If you haven’t read this story before reading this, you’re doing it wrong. So, go do it right by reading the story and then come back!

Part Five of my follow-up for "The Mare Who Once Lived on the Moon!" This part covers the chapters To Love the Moon, To Love the Moonshine & The Student who Defies. If you want to start at Part One, you can find it right here!

To Love the Moon, To Love the Moonshine

You know, I didn’t really read the title for this chapter completely. And frankly, even if I had, I would have seen it as the shine of the moon… not the other thing. This was an unexpected chapter. An odd chapter. But a chapter that builds.

The Lion and the Unicorn, what would have been... · 11:56am May 7th

When I started writing this story, I envisioned it to be the first part of seven stories. Each focusing on one of the main 6 and their own struggles to try and find a way home, the seventh would have been a final showdown using what they had learned and brought back with them against Discord.

But as always, life got in the way and I stopped writing. As time passed I lost the will to pick it up, and then in the long break between season 4 and 5 I had sadly lost all interest in MLP. But now that I’m back, I still can’t bring myself to finish this story, or any of the others. It was an ambitious task, and while I do believe that the Lion and the Unicorn is the best fanfic I’ve wrote, the whole plan was just too much for me.

So, today I decided to show you what would have been the first half of chapter 7. But what would have happened next? Well…

    Greetings my Brony brethren!

A belated Happy New Year to you all!

Well, this certainly took a lot longer to get out than I expected. The Christmas season ate up a lot of my time. This ended up becoming my first blog of this year.

    Season 5 Retrospective · 11:53pm Nov 28th, 2015

Warning: Season-wide spoilers abound. Proceed with caution.

So, that was fun, wasn't it? I honestly consider this to be the best season so far. Why do I think this? Well, I have a few reasons. And I'd be more than happy to list 'em off to you.

I liked Starlight Glimmer as an antagonist. Her blatant hypocrisy and petty short-sightedness made her somepony I loved to hate. Yes, I know she was redeemed; I don't have a problem with that. But I certainly don't sympathize with her.

I liked how they dealt with the destruction of Golden Oak Library. Well, for the most part. The girls seemed to have turned off their brains when thinking of ways to make Twilight's castle feel more like home. Still, the feels were there.

I liked the insecurities Apple Bloom had to face about getting her Cutie Mark. I think we all were expecting an episode like that to happen sooner or later.

    Season 5 Retrospective · 12:53am Jan 8th, 2016

Right, so it's been a month since I last checked in, and at that time I said I'd write a couple blog posts. Well, the holiday season came at me like a ton of bricks, what with its real-life obligations and so forth. I wish I had been able to put some time aside for writing, but I'm honestly pretty bad about that. But that's all over and I have more free time than usual. So, like I said last time, I had some thoughts about Season 5, specifically everything after "The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone". It's been a while since I wrote about an episode and it's all old news by this point, so I'll try and lump it all together instead of writing about each individual episode. Honestly, my opinion of Season 5 is mixed. Some things I feel were done very well and the rest wasn't, and you might be surprised to hear what I liked and didn't like. But we can definitely start off with what I enjoyed! Just be prepared for a few paragraphs.

This is where I wish I was more prolific: A Season 1 retrospective, or something. · 8:36pm Dec 20th, 2015

Well, guys, I did the thing. And then some.

I have just now caught up with the entirety of Season 5. The reason it took so long is because I got it into my head that I should rewatch the entire show again.

Now, not to bore you with personal stuff, but unfortunately I didn't work on my stories all that much the past few weeks. So I regret to inform you that Rainbow Dash and the Embarrassing Self-Insert is nowhere near ready, not even past outline stage at this point, and Ponyville's First Warrior Meet (the Flight Camp sequel) still needs to get its actual Warrior Meet written. Now that I know Diamond Tiara has a mother and Moondancer is a character, I'll have to edit a few things, too.

Is This the Place We Used to Love? (Musings on Somewhere Only We Know) · 4:23am Jun 7th, 2015

Somewhere Only We Know just had its fourth anniversary and what the actual frickity frack, you guys.

When did that happen? Who allowed this? This story could go to preschool. This story could talk smack to me and draw pictures of itself. People who read this story in high school are in college now. The sands of time grow abrasive. Even now, I feel the claws of Father Time drag across my cheek as I the cold chasms of time whisp--

    Ahem.
Pardon, I had a bit of nostalgic panic, there.

    Can't Hold Out Forever : Musings on "A Diamond and a Tether" · 6:03am Jan 26th, 2015

    Hello, Dear Reader.

    Observe: I wrote a thing!
It's about this tiny horse jerk and her tiny horse problems:

Yes, as I mused in my last journal entry, I indeed entered EQD's More Most Dangerous Game Contest.
Lemmie tell ya, this story gave me a run for my money. This is the biggest word count I've written in this amount of time. 13,000 in one week (and since I write my rough drafts in a notebook, I pretty much rewrite it again when I type it, so arguably, 26,000). Usually this workload is spread out over a month and frankly, I'm amazed I managed it. I'm a first timer for a contest of any sort, and it's all quite exciting/terrifying. How I'll be able to wait for the results, I have no idea.

    The Best of Season 5 · 2:51am Dec 4th, 2015

Another season of pony has come and gone. And what a bucking season it was :pinkiegasp: The Crusaders got their Cutie Marks, Discord learned two friendship lessons, Derpy Hooves spoke, we got to see all our favorite old villains again, Diamond Tiara got redeemed, and Big Macintosh became BBBBFF (Best Big Brother Best Friend Forever). Not to mention the massive feels train the writers seemed intent on pummeling into the fandom every five episodes or so. Our little ponies (get it?) have come a long way from Season 1. There were a few duds this season, but for once it's not even worth complaining about the bad episodes because the good ones completely overwhelm them. When this season struck the mark, it struck it HARD

    Covering Season 3, for what it's worth. · 3:52pm Dec 22nd, 2015

In general, there’s not as much to say on the individual episodes, simply because a lot of them are situation-based, rather than character or world-based. For shorter stories, that can be enough, but the downside is it doesn’t do much in terms of worldbuilding.

Season 3 was the first season I followed completely as it came out, so it’s the first time I started blogging shortly after episodes came out. It was also the last season I followed as it came out.

A lot of the points I’ll have covered in stories, more so than before.

    Crystal Empire

Oh, Berry, how did you end up there?

Remember back in Canterlot Wedding, I pointed out that Shining’s shield had to be recharged at times? Cadence’s shield doesn’t, and she suffers for it. She is constantly leaking magic and she cannot afford to sleep, or eat, or the magic tap is switched off and the kingdom falls. Poor girl.

    Remarks on Season 4 · 8:09am Dec 23rd, 2015

Again, for those who aren't aware: the following was written during the viewing, and usually pausing the videos. It was also written without prior knowledge of Season 5, some spoilers notwithstanding.

    Enjoy!

I’m not going to do an episode-by-episode talk on this one, simply for the sake of saving time.

Edit: at the time of writing, I'd missed a few days in my schedule, and come to the realisation that stopping and writing down thoughts really slowed down the viewing process.

Suffice to say the show is a very different beast now. This Season is to My Little Pony what Beast Hunters was to Transformers: Prime, basically. Not bad in and of itself, mind you, just different.

    Let’s Talk About Summer Island · 6:21pm Jun 23rd, 2016

Time for another editorial/review/commentary-thingy! (I really need to come up with a name for these things). As usual, the contents of this will spoil pretty much the entire story, so if you haven’t read it, go away and read it before you go any further.

Don’t make me bring out the pickle barrel.

    I’ll do it. I WILL!

So this whole FiMFicition book cover design thing seems to be a lot more popular than I expected. When I first started out, I got someone who declined it. They weren’t mean about it, but it came off as a little bit odd, sort of like a “pat on the head.” In truth, it probably wasn’t meant that way at all and I was just looking at it weird that day. But what ended up happening is I kept them to myself for a while.

Just a modified cover with the title and author name.

Before I even started this story, I knew I would do another one of these emotional retrospectives. Hm. Not sure about that name. But it’s easier to say than editorial/commentary/review-thingy. As usual, the following pretty much spoils absolutely everything for Sunset of Time by Albinocorn, so please, please, please...if you haven’t read it, do so before continuing.
