    State of the Unicorn: Poor

That's poor in both senses, I'm afraid! Though before I say any more, I need to stress that I have a warm, safe home, enough to eat, internet access... the essentials, really. I am not in danger of losing those. However, I won't be doing much beyond those essentials for a while. Without going into boring details, I will very shortly be going in for dental work to be done. Which, as

    So then, Doctor Who

Loved it! A few little quibbles, not all the acting from the newcomers was stellar and sadly parts of the gender-related stuff felt awkward and forced, eg "something a male-presenting Time Lord wouldn't understand", but I liked much more than I didn't. Plus one of my worries about the new Disney-cash-infused Who has been dispelled: this definitely did

    Bloody Covid

Fortunately not in the literal sense! But yeah, I'm currently stuck at home, yet not feeling well enough to concentrate on ponyfic. It's a seriously annoying combination. :pinkiesick:

    UK PonyCon report

This is inelegantly copy/pasted over from the (slightly) nicer looking report over on Louder Yay. Of course, I'm sure you all read Louder Yay anyway because you're such great people, but just in case here's the report here as well...

Season 8, Episode 10: "The Break Up Break Down" · 10:29pm May 19th, 2018

A pretty entertaining episode this week. Very predictable at times, but the journey was fun enough that knowing the destination didn't really matter. I'm not generally a great fan of romance in FiM, but Big Mac and Sugar Belle are a cute couple. The CMC subplot was amusing, too. ★★★, but a high one. Update: upgraded to ★★★★ after a second watch.

Sugar Belle is cute as fuck, but they need to stop doing romance episodes. <.< That was the whole point of Hearts and Hooves Day, after all.

I'd file that under "this isn't your mother's FiM", probably, same as the way the early satire and scepticism about the upper crust has fallen away now Twilight is royal herself.

Ah, so you also agree the show has gotten worse. :D

Nah. It's different, but that's okay. I don't think I'd have wanted eight years of S1/S2-style Pony, in any case.

Could you write a blog post going into a little more detail about this?

I mean, I didn't either. Three years would have been plenty. :B

That would require coherence of thought! I don't rule it out at some point, but don't hold your breath. However, I can give a brief idea here: with a couple of exceptions (eg Fancy Pants) the royalty and aristocracy we see early on are pretty awful. Blueblood, Upper Crust, Jet Set, etc. Now that Twilight is a princess she's more often mixing with folk on a similar level. While they might have their foibles (eg Rutherford) they're usually fundamentally good characters.

A vast improvement over last week's outing. Though I think I'd give it a 4 out of 5 for how it juggles 3 subplots with relative ease, the well-timed comedy, and the character interactions.

See, it's possible to make an episode in the vein of a past story WITHOUT regressing or undoing any development. (Take notes, Ms. Beyer-Johnson.)

It might get bumped up to a four for my full review offsite. I'll decide after another watch. Nick Confalone has a reasonable record with me, if not the best. (AKR holds that overall title, I think.)
