    State of the Unicorn: Poor

That's poor in both senses, I'm afraid! Though before I say any more, I need to stress that I have a warm, safe home, enough to eat, internet access... the essentials, really. I am not in danger of losing those. However, I won't be doing much beyond those essentials for a while. Without going into boring details, I will very shortly be going in for dental work to be done. Which, as

    Happy Hearth's Warming Eve!

I keep my online activity to an absolute minimum on Christmas Day, so I'll take this opportunity to wish all of you reading this a Merry Christmas!¹ However life has treated you over the past year, I hope it treats you better over the next. I shall be back to reading Fimfiction on Boxing Day!

    So then, Doctor Who

Loved it! A few little quibbles, not all the acting from the newcomers was stellar and sadly parts of the gender-related stuff felt awkward and forced, eg "something a male-presenting Time Lord wouldn't understand", but I liked much more than I didn't. Plus one of my worries about the new Disney-cash-infused Who has been dispelled: this definitely did

    Bloody Covid

Fortunately not in the literal sense! But yeah, I'm currently stuck at home, yet not feeling well enough to concentrate on ponyfic. It's a seriously annoying combination. :pinkiesick:

    UK PonyCon report

This is inelegantly copy/pasted over from the (slightly) nicer looking report over on Louder Yay. Of course, I'm sure you all read Louder Yay anyway because you're such great people, but just in case here's the report here as well...

Season 8, Episode 9: "Non-Compete Clause" · 8:48pm May 13th, 2018

Character development? Pah, who needs a silly thing like that? Thank Celestia for the Student Six. And Fluttershy. Because the stuff with AJ and Dash was pretty dire. Watch "Fall Weather Friends" again instead. It's basically this, but better. ★★

Yeah the :ajbemused:/:rainbowderp: dumb got a bit too much for me, particularly when the middle of the episode was the same thing repeated too many times, and especially when the two of them still hadn't wised up by the end.

But the Student Six were very enjoyable, and I hope we see a lot more of them... possibly on their own. Or is that too much to ask?

When the new gaggle of idiots and jerks have a better showing than characters with seven years' worth of development, they may as well admit they're trying to writing the mane six out of the show and just get on with it already. >.>

The first major dud of Season 8. Not an offensively bad episode like "Newbie Dash", just an aggressively mediocre bad like "The Cart Before The Ponies."

"The Cart Before the Ponies" is the episode I've been comparing it to, too. Much the same problem there as here with character regression.

I actually quite like "Newbie Dash". :fluttercry:

My apologies, "Mysterious Mare Do Well" would have been a better point of comparison. But yeah, this episode was rather poor.

Fortunately, the next two episodes are a lot better than this one.

This was painful =/. As nit-picky as it may sound, the fact that they decided to have this as the 9th month since they started the school, all to do a very cheap gag, is perfectly emblematic of the writing process here. The rest of the 20-odd minutes were just a prolapsed confirmation of that.

At this point I would be happier if they stuck to writing episodes about not-yet-stablished characters.
