Urban Wilds art commission (Content warning: blood)

A while ago, I commissioned Moonatik for some Urban Wilds art, and I think it turned out great. But fair warning: it's pretty bloody, taking place shortly after Amanita kills her two attackers, so only open this post if you're okay with that. (I checked the site's rules, and it fits in the postable "borderline" category".) Got that? Good.

    New Hinterlands sequel

I've been working on another sequel to Hinterlands for over a year, and it's finally ready to be published! Check out the continuing adventures of our hapless necromancer and her bounty hunter friend in the great white north:

    TDeath Valley
Hostile lands. Frigid valleys. Backwater villages. Shadowy forests. Vicious beasts. Gloomy mines. Strange magics. And the nicest pony for miles is a necromancer. A royal investigation of tainted ley lines uncovers dark secrets in the Frozen North.

Barcast: Last Call, Last Mini-rounds, I'm on Tap

As you may have heard, the Barcast interview group is sadly closing its doors. But before they do, they're having one last stream: a series of rapid-fire five-minute interviews this Saturday with as many people as they can manage. And guess who decided to sign up?

    Hinterlands / Urban Wilds fanart

Recently, Moonatik decided that Hinterlands and Urban Wilds were somehow good enough to merit fanart and drew a picture of Bitterroot and Amanita. I think it's neat!

Plotbunnies I Can't Get Rid Of · 3:37pm Jan 26th, 2022

I've got a lot of ideas bouncing around my head and I feel like I'll go nuts if I can't get them out. But I've got more ambition than I do time, so the odds of getting them out are slim. But I've got some people who think I'm interesting here; might as well tell them what's bouncing around my head. Here's what I've been thinking about:

  • Catch You on the Flipside: A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. Just make sure it’s dangerous for the right pony. Sombra has ruled Equestria with an iron hoof for nearly a millennium. Technology is advanced, but magical knowledge has stagnated, and any research not approved by him is quickly suppressed to ensure his forces are always the most powerful. Many ponies are unaware of their full potential. When a small group of rebels try to perform an experiment to test the known limits of magic, it pulls something unexpected from another universe: a mare named Twilight Sparkle. And in this stunted world, her brain, not her alicornhood, might be her most valuable asset.
  • Chasing the Sunset: Daring Do, Zecora, and Autumn Blaze sail west. Where, exactly, do kirin come from? How have they survived long enough to become legends when their grove only holds a few dozen? With Autumn as her guide and Zecora as her linguist, Daring sails west to find out. Lots and lots and LOTS of stuff happens. Basically, the obligatory Epic that never gets finished.
  • Daring Do and the Crest of the Skies: Some might call it adventuring. She prefers “dynamic archaeology”. An Indiana Jones homage, with Daring chasing after a set of artifacts that can let any pony control the weather with more skill than a dozen crack teams of pegasi. Do I really need to say anything more after “Indiana Jones homage”?
  • Heavenly View: Garbagemares in spaaaaaaaaace! A sci-fi fic set hundreds of years in the future, some time after an ablation cascade has rendered much of low-Equus orbit nigh-unusable. It follows a batpony rookie in the crew of DT Heavenly View, one of numerous trawling crews cleaning up space trash, on her first mission. The reactor technician is a seapony who speaks in Jamaican patois.
  • Laid to Rest: There’s business that needs finishing. An alternate-universe fic set in a 1950s-esque Fillydelphia with a heavy urban fantasy bent. A cash-strapped Starlight desperately takes a job as an apprentice medium under Twilight (who, due to the changes in the timeline, is still a unicorn), helping dead ponies pass on.
  • Locomotive Breath: That howling you hear isn’t the engine. A short horror fic about a dark artifact being moved across the wilderness by train, the ponies responsible for guarding it, and the monster stalking them through the carriages.
  • The Streets of Porto Cavallino: Take your pith helmet off, stay a while. Technically about Daring tracking down the location of an ancient general’s perfectly mundane award (for pure archaeology, not world-saving), but that’s really just the setup for a slow-paced, plot-light experiment in creating a sense of place for a peaceful seaside Bitalian town.
  • What Went Wrong: Derpy wants ice cream. This has serious international consequences. Pinkie gets Derpy a carton of really good ice cream, ice cream only made in a certain region of Equestria. Derpy goes there to get more, only to find the region embroiled in [TO BE DETERMINED], with herself as the tipping point between the various factions vying for control. Except she doesn’t notice any of that, she just wants her dang ice cream. Picture a low-Intelligence, high-Luck playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas or The Outer Worlds.

Does one of those sound especially interesting to you? Mention it and maybe I'll get to work on it once I've got the time!

I think I love necromancy stories and I won't mind seeing more of them ("helping dead ponies move on" does count, right?) aside from the adventures of Amanita and Bitterroot. Garbagemares in space has an attractive set of conceptional contrast (mundane trash cleaning versus adventures in space) and Locomotive Breath sounds interesting as well.

I'm always up for the improbable adventures of Best Pony. :derpytongue2: Though honestly, most of these sound outstanding.

Oh... Damn. Thine Cup flows over with the fount of imagination! I love all of them, but the three that tip my interest the most: Locomotive breath, cause everyone needs a little fear now and again. Laid to Rest, cause let's face it it sounds like fifties noir fun with a mix of haunting epithets. And finally, Catch you on the Flipside, though ya gotta forgive me my want to ship Twilight and Sombra sometimes. Just too much fun a pairing.

And ya know what, since you're throwing out plotbunnies. I got one of my own I wanna niggle ya with! Muahahaha!!!!

Think Frank Herbert's Dune. While Harmony is a force of the world, what of the waters of life? What if Harmony were more like the Melange? Rare and quantifiable, only one region within Equestria able to produce it. Celestia takes the role of Empress, Luna leads "House Sparkle" with Twilight (Or even better, Shining Armor!) as her heir apparent! "House Sombra" has been removed as the harvesters of the source! Even Chrysalis and her bugs play a part as the Navigator's guild!

What Went Wrong and Heavenly View both sound really interesting

Daring Do and the Crest of the Skies and Chasing Sunset seem interesting. (There aren't enough Daring Do stories in my opinion.)

I don't feel a special desire to read any of these beyond the last one, which seems hilarious.

All of them sound interesting.

And the last one sounds hilarious!

Throwing my weight behind What Went Wrong for sure.

Chasing the Sunset, Porto Cavallino and Crest Of The Skies all sound bangin

Of those, mainly Heavenly View, What Went Wrong, and Flipside catch my interest, though the train one might be interesting too?

Catch You On The Flipside and Ponytes Heavenly View both sound interesting! Or more Amanita and Bitterroot... :rainbowlaugh:

I know how you feel
I got notes up my flank.... :/

Working on other fanfiction atm

Oooh, these all sound fun. Hmm... Catch You on the Flipside, Chasing the Sunset and Laid to Rest sound especially appealing.

Locomotive Breath sounds interesting! For some reason I have a fascination with supernatural horror stories on trains.

With how many stories you manage to complete, I did wonder how many you never start. I like the sound of Heavenly View just because there aren't enough sci-fi stories.

Laid To Rest sounds pretty awesome.
