I ain't here to stir the pot or start controversy, but I wanted to give my two cents on the G5 movie.
Y'all may not know it, but I'm a veteran of the long war pony game since G1. Trust me, I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly, so I figured I'd give my hot take on the newest iteration of pastel equines.
The G5 movie exceeded my expectations, introduced a number of interesting characters, and was a fun, entertaining movie.

Here's the thing about the G5 movie - it did what it was meant to do. The movie was literally just an introduction, a nice piece of cheese to get our interest for the impending special and first season. I'll admit, the film had a relatively simple plot, there's a metric ton of shit that wasn't explained, and some would say it felt rushed - that said, it was a perfectly serviceable story with likeable characters, damn good songs, and it served its purpose.
If there's one piece of advice I can give to folks, it's to go into the movie with an open mind - sure, they may reference G4 and G1, but it's its own thing!
TLDR FINAL THOUGHTS
At the end of the day, pony has been about one thing and one thing only - enjoying a comfy, fun, wholesome IP that warms your heart and distracts you from the doldrums of everyday life. I don't give a shit who you are, where you're from, or what kind of life you live, MLP was, is, and always will be just a cute show to make you smile.
I'll more than likely write some G5 stuff, but I need more data. I can't go and start making content without more exposition and lore.

The thing I like about this film is that sure it would’ve been nice if they answered some things but it’s cool that it’s not relying on the chemistry and formula of G4 to move its own plot along

Purely subjective opinion:
I'm glad they didn't lean too heavily on G4 material/characters/lore
There are plenty of easter eggs and little fun bits, but G5 is its own thing
If we're lucky, Hasbro will let it stand on its own two feet instead of riding the coat-tails of G4

I fully agree about the G5 movie, they had to keep it simple and not let itself be bogged down with lore and explanations that were ultimately not necessary for the story and I fully agree on their decision on sticking the focus on the characters. keeping the story simple to it's constituent elements allowed plenty of breathing room to allow us to get lost in the world and atmosphere and appreciate the details and attention on the scenes; the the explanation and detail come in when the actual TV series finally start and getting to explore the world more in detail then.

Which honestly I really do think that trying to critique on it just to compare it to G4 and to see how it connects is EXTREMELY unfair tbh.
I’m curious about G5 and I watched a review on it and it seems promising. It’s not going to take the place of G4 but it can’t be worse then the old Gens

Haven't seen it yet, but I completely agree with the sentiment. Cartoons are meant to be fun escapism first.
I dare say the G5 pilot was better than the G4 pilot; in part because they had more time for exposition to tell a compelling story. Also the theme of coming together to ignore the lies and fearmongering of the older generation is extremely relevant now, whereas Nightmare Moon was kind of shoehorned in there as a conflict source.
I have to agree with some leech here. While there was alot not explained and it was a simpler story, I took it as an introduction to our new generation and the kind of problems it's facing. In that regard the movie did great in my opinion as the problems that were mentioned about it were things that are things that would be better addressed by the specials or the upcoming first season. While I'm on the fence about the new gen I'm looking forward to how it works out

That's one of my big gripe about the neighsayers. Folks tend to turn a blind eye to all the flaws of G4. I loved G4 with every fiber of my being, I really did, but don't pretend like it was some perfect, immaculate piece of media.

If they blew their load and explained everything in the movie, what reason would we have to keep watching?
The movie was the carrot on the stick - nothing more than incentive to keep us tuned in.
That's by no means a bad thing, but they know they still have more story to tell.

Unfortunately, the movie does not just reference G4 but canonically is a sequel and a continuation of G4. This creates so many issues
If magic disappeared then how does the Earth ponies grow their food, who monitors the weather, who moves the Sun and Moon
If the four tribes have been separated then what was the point of the mane six, the young six, the school of friendship, PRINCESS twilight sparkle, and everything that happened in G4
I am more than worried about the future but I reserve my judgment until season 1

I liked it as well. Enjoyed the animation (except for about 10 seconds where the walk animation looked off), the music and most of the songs. I did have the slight annoyance of how the hell the situation got the way it is but I understood that not everything can or should be crammed into one movie. I hope they’ll reveal the past through ruins or old books.

My guess is the local quantum "Weave" (ultimate source of all magic) for equestria would return to what we consider normal. Physics would return to our definition of normal, weather patterns would return to the water cycle driven model were used to, crops would grow at the rate we would expect here without the earth ponies accelerating it, etc.

I really really enjoyed it a lot now that I watched it 5 times. I don't mind them not explaining much of what happened in the past because that's not the point of this story. Sunny has to unite the three tribes first before she can move on to finding the cause of this conflict. It was an entertaining movie, likeable characters, a simple story, and great songs. It received mostly positive reviews from the fandom and am glad
In any case, the movie not explaining what happened gives us the reason to come back. They want us to come back for the series

Crunch the Rockdog is probably my favorite for solidifying my adoration and empathy for Wind Whistler.
And the one with the monkey kidnappers which solidified Danny and Surprise as a ship in my mind.
And pretty much all of Pony Tales is good.
In G3, A Charming Birthday is my fave. You gotta love Razaroo being a slightly less-manic Party Pony than any of the G4 party ponies, and you know Kimono is constantly internally asking herself 'why do I bother with all these lunatics?'
Much as I'd have liked an answer to "what the hell happened for pony society to end up like this", I'm kinda glad we didn't get it because that's not the kind of thing you can just handwave away or say "oh it was just this guy's fault". For things to backslide this hard, it was probably more several somethings, and it'd probably have bogged down the movie with more exposition.
But yeah. It was a fun movie with a coherent storyline, good visuals and some surprisingly good songs. I eagerly await the show.

If Cele and Luna were born into a world with magic, they could've easily presumed that everything would fall apart without magic
A few facts:

> the ending was rather forced
> this wasn't so much a movie was a 'Pilot episode' (similar to 'Jafars Return' setting up Aladin, the series).
Overall:

'everyone suddenly forgot to get along' is all we got... and Princesses are not around? What about other immortal beings?? okay...
So there is a lot open, clearly meant for the show to pick up~ so as a 'standalone movie' it doesn't quite work in that regard.
The Gen4 movie (Tempest n all) has a start and an end and you can watch it just fine without knowing a thing.
Anyhow: the 'MAGIC HOOVES TRAIL' at the very end was a great tease!
Earth ponies got their own magic (if more subtle >strength/plant growth) which reminded me a lot of Mistmane (or possibly Rockhoof) so that area is rather unexplored! I hope to see a lot more of it :)
Now, this might sound rather cold and analytical, but i do like it and saw it twice already :p

It was fun, only mildly cringey, and it leaves a lot of stuff to explore for the actual series. All in all better than I expected, yeah.

The G1 cartoon is canon in this universe. Therefore, there's nothing to say that what we watched in G4, aaaall the seasons of Twilight & co's adventures, they could aaaaaall just be a cartoon that aired in the G5 universe, and could have never happened for realsies. The toys and stuff? Could just be Sunny thinking a cartoon was actually real, indulged by her father. So people who complain about G5 being different to G4? You could just tell them "but G4 wasn't even real, in universe".

I think it could be a good thing if they make it in the future of the G4 universe; I just hope they don't retcon too much stuff like Legend of Korra did to Avatar, but as long as their new team is as attentive as the G4 team I think we'll be mostly ok.
I also hope they think up a good explanation of how they got from Twilight's kingdom to this state.
If it were its own thing that would be easier on the writers, but they already announced it would be a continuation so idk.

I think the continuation/sequel is just a money grab. A way to milk G4 further.
I already see G5 as Legend of Korra for several reasons:
1) in a world so reliant on Magic, the loss of magic does not cause a societal collapse. They make no reference to this Monumental historic event in the movie. Imagine what would have happened if our entire world suddenly lost electricity; no more lights, no more cars, no more fridge, no more internet, no more phones.
2) G5 introduced ancient pony relics that contain all of the magic ponies had. It doesn't matter if they needed it or not in the movie The Very fact that G4 never mentioned nor referenced this makes it a deus ex machina. I know some people would compare them to The Elements of Harmony, however, the Elements of Harmony were introduced at the beginning of the show and G4 was its own thing and not a sequel.
3) at the end of G4, the ponies had made friends with Dragons, take, changelings, hippogryphs, zebra, and Griffins. Yet in the entirety of the G5 movie we do not see any of them.
Because G5 is a continuation of G4 it must play by the rules established in G4. And by the movie's standards it has failed horribly at that front. If it was its own thing these issues would have been moot.
I hope in the season 1 of G5 they are able to explain away these issues and I hope that My Little Pony has not caught the progressive bug. I was worried that Pony Life, and by extension My Little Pony, would go the way like Teen Titans Go and Thundercats Roar.

Just because humans were canon in Prior Generations does not mean that they are Canon in Equestria (world) in G4. Just because they are inventions that are similar to what humans have nowadays to that mean the ponies could not invent them themselves. G4 ponies exist in a separate Dimension to the humans. While it is unlikely that they interacted in the past we do see inventions meant for humans such as chairs and hammers, but they have no knowledge of humans as shown in the Equestria Girls movie. Also if humans become so integral to Pony Society, where are they in the movie?
So far you have offered an alternative Universe to G4 timeline; which would not make it a continuation, as stated by the Creator's, Discord; which while possible, is a literal deus ex machina, and Grogar's Bell; which would still cause the societal collapse of the ponies (see electricity example) and should have been locked away. These are some great ideas for some FanFictions and maybe the creators will use one of your ideas but they still have their flaws not worth the money that goes into a show like MLP.
I still stand by the opinion that G5 should have been its own thing and not be constrained to the rules of G4. The loss of magic in G4 should have caused a societal collapse for the ponies, if not the world. They were too reliant on Magic.
Where are all the other creatures introduced in G4? (If I were to fix this I would have a background zebra or mule with the earth ponies and maybe a griffin with the pegisi)
The creation of generation 5 so soon after generation 4 ends AND the fact that it is a continuation of generation 4 (why not just make a season 10) makes me fear the generation 5 will be nothing more than a corporate Leach off the popularity of generation 4 but we will see when season 1 premieres
