Hooray Hooray the first of May . . .

Source

Y’all know the rest.

We got socked with a late-season snowfall on April 21st or thereabouts. Amusingly enough, over the next couple of days, Facebook shared my memories about other late-April snowfalls.

In the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t much, but after a week of leaving the windows open and the shop doors open and the promise of spring, waking up to snow—even if predicted—was dejecting.

But now it’s (hopefully) gone for good. As is the F150 that I put one exhaust manifold on and then another. Remember that 350 that needed up pipes? Turns out once it was gone there was another Ford that needed manifolds; at least those can be installed with the cab still on, sort of. I fixed one side which we knew was leaking badly, and once it was installed it became apparent that the other one was leaking, too.

Remember that buy who put the engine in the Silverado and the clutch in the Dodge and doesn’t know how to keep bolts sorted so when someone else has to finish putting it together, they just have to guess where the parts go and what order they go on? He worked three days a week, ‘cause he was going to school the other two. Anyway, last Friday he turned in his two week notice. No big loss.

He normally doesn’t work on Monday, and he called in on Tuesday saying he was sick, and my manager who’s also tired of his :yay: told him that he couldn’t come back until he provided a negative COVID test. So I suspect that the last I’ll see of him is when he comes in to pick up his tool cart. Granted, that’s made more work for me, but honestly I’m not even mad.

Also speaking of work, on Wednesday Ford delivered a crate containing a remanufactured 6.4L diesel which I’m going to get to install in that truck I mentioned a while back. The one where I put injectors in it but it wasn’t the injectors after all. That’s likely to be a fun all-week project, or more if I get pulled off it to do other things, which is likely. And that’s also going to get done on our dodgy hoist, which means I’ll be doing some disassembly and reassembly on the floor. At least I know now how far away I’ve got to get to avoid a coolant bath.

I’m still debating which cons I might attend this year. Trotcon’s been postponed to December, and I’ll probably do that one although the weekend they chose is hardly convenient. EFNW is still a toss-up for me, even with the vaccine I’m still not sure I want to commit to crowding in a infectious skytube. Might just pick another couple cons that are near to Michigan, assuming that they’re on; it’s a good excuse for a road trip. I think there’s Ciderfest and Windy City which are both drivable distances.

Source

And speaking of road trips, one of these days I ought to finish my series of blogs on my epic trip up north. Ideally before a year has passed since the trip. I’m pretty sure it hasn’t yet, but then since the start of the pandemic, time has lost all meaning. For example when I went to start this blog, I had to check the date stamp on the picture of snow to remember when that happened.

Springtime is planting time, and I’ve got some plans for plants. I’m not the only one; on a few of my test drives I’ve had to avoid tractors on the road, and on Thursday I had to dodge a giant lawn-roller trying to get through town. Hopefully this year I’ll be able to find my shovel; I do actually remember where I left it, and since it’s all-steel it won’t have been eaten by termites. Might have rusted some, ‘cause where I left it was stabbed in the soil next to the last plant I planted, sort of as a marker so I wouldn’t accidentally run that plant over with a lawnmower.

I don’t remember where my lawnmower is.

Eh, whatever, I’m sure it’ll turn up.

Image not related, however it might serve me as a useful reminder that my bin is broken and I should call Granger and see about getting a new one.

Feels like there’s one more tidbit of wisdom I ought to impart at the end of this, some grand conclusion to keep it from just being another rambly blog but with cute pony pictures and the occasional bit of mechanic lingo. But I got nothing.

Well, except for another cute pony picture.

You say that like it's a bad thing! :raritywink: Keep the rambles and cute pony pics coming!

And it also means May the Fourth is approaching, I think you know what that is.

Can I ask why call Granger? Wouldn’t your local Home Depot, Lowe’s, or other box chain home improvement store carry them?

Y’all know the rest.

Um, yes, of course we know the rest of that. :twilightoops: Right, so let me just, er, get right on remembering... the thing with the other thing... ah!

Hooray Hooray the first of May . . .

"...we gather together to play all day,
the pony is merry, the company gay,
and yes, I certainly meant 'that way'?"

...sorry that's all I got :derpytongue2:

Too bad you didn't get a picture of the giant lawn-roller, I would've liked to see it.

The evil part of me hopes that there's something terminally wrong with your shovel because that would be hilarious (well, for me anyway). :rainbowlaugh:

Dan

It was almost 90 today, and then dropping back down to the 30s on Tuesday. Gonna have to bring the plants back in again for the 3rd time in a month.

I have not the heart to speak of that. For me the grief is still too near.

1977-2012

Fuck Disney.
Aaron Allston's final Wraith Squadron entry was the last piece of real Star Wars.

The Glorious 25 of May is Towel Day and International Geek Pride Day. I hope everypony is stoked for that.

Picture absolutely related! Tongue bath = coolant bath!

sort of as a marker so I wouldn’t accidentally run that plant over with a lawnmower.
I don’t remember where my lawnmower is.

Why does the lawn need to be mowed? :trollestia: town regulations? Home owners club?
Why not just put some pavers where you want to walk and leave everywhere else to grow, or better yet, use grass that remains naturally short, or not have grass and instead have some other, more useful plant?

On a semi unrelated note, I recently found out apparently radishes, if allowed to bolt and go to seed, produce edible seed pods. Kinda like beans. Reviewers commented that they tasted... Kind of like the radish root. Maybe with a hint of spicy and a stronger "raw vegetable" taste.

Speaking of going to cons... ;)
This was yesterday afternoon.

Still about 15 minutes to go (of the 24 hours) before the closing ceremony.

Spot Dark Roast. Apparently drunk enough to do some dance moves.

I don’t remember where my lawnmower is.
Eh, whatever, I’m sure it’ll turn up.

And even if not, you had already provided the solution:

ESaturday
Saturday was a day to unwind, a day to sleep late, to eat brunch instead of breakfast, go out to the lake, or to invite friends over for a barbeque. Unless the lawnmower was broken and Ms. Bundermann is on the prowl.

Should anyone tell him he still uses the christmas version of his avatar?

As I often say: "Never put your snow supplies away until May at the earliest."

I was waiting to see how long it would go before he changed it.

Well, except for another cute pony picture.

Lucky thing then that the world could always use more cute pony pictures. They are, after all, good for the soul. :ajsmug:

Cute pony pictures are the balm for life's torments.
Road trip Trixie was especially adorable! :raritywink:
And I'll take your rambles over others diatribes any and every day. :pinkiehappy:

You say that like it's a bad thing! :raritywink: Keep the rambles and cute pony pics coming!

Alright, can do!

5510783

And it also means May the Fourth is approaching, I think you know what that is.

It’s also the day I’m probably going to start putting an engine in a Ford. Yay!

5510787

Can I ask why call Granger? Wouldn’t your local Home Depot, Lowe’s, or other box chain home improvement store carry them?

I forgot Granger the industrial supply company was also a thing.

Granger is also the name of my garbage service, and they provide the curbies, so when you need a new one, you call them and they’ll deliver it and pick up your old one, too.

5510790

Um, yes, of course we know the rest of that. :twilightoops: Right, so let me just, er, get right on remembering... the thing with the other thing... ah!

It’s either a reference to a Jonathan Coulton song,

"...we gather together to play all day,
the pony is merry, the company gay,
and yes, I certainly meant 'that way'?"

...sorry that's all I got :derpytongue2:

That’s a possibility, too.

5510838

It was almost 90 today, and then dropping back down to the 30s on Tuesday. Gonna have to bring the plants back in again for the 3rd time in a month.

That’s kind of how it’s been around here, although without such extremes. I think it was in the 80s today, and lows are supposed to drop back in the 30s next week.

The Glorious 25 of May is Towel Day and International Geek Pride Day. I hope everypony is stoked for that.

Indeed!

5510839

Picture absolutely related! Tongue bath = coolant bath!

Well, I would rather be licked by a pony than drenched in Ford Gold Coolant, so. . . .

sort of as a marker so I wouldn’t accidentally run that plant over with a lawnmower.
I don’t remember where my lawnmower is.

Why does the lawn need to be mowed? :trollestia: town regulations? Home owners club?

To keep it sort of in control. Also local regulations require at least the front yard to be mowed; the backyard can get longer, ‘cause there’s a pasture on one side and a wooded hill and then a swamp on the other.

Why not just put some pavers where you want to walk and leave everywhere else to grow, or better yet, use grass that remains naturally short, or not have grass and instead have some other, more useful plant?

I do have some of that, and I’ve been planting things here and there that I don’t have to mow, but I don’t have the budget to re-landscape an acre of yard.

Huh, that’s interesting. I knew that kale bolted, I had one that did that once. Never tried eating it.

5511291

Ah. I see all that industrial stuff come through at my job. They are about as bad as the company that sells home improvement stuff. Apparently Murphy beds are apparently all the rage these days.

5510852

Speaking of going to cons... ;)
This was yesterday afternoon.

Ooh, online pony con!

Spot Dark Roast. Apparently drunk enough to do some dance moves.

I have no idea :rainbowlaugh:

5510795

Too bad you didn't get a picture of the giant lawn-roller, I would've liked to see it.

You’re in luck; I did. I just didn’t put it in the blog.

The evil part of me hopes that there's something terminally wrong with your shovel because that would be hilarious (well, for me anyway).

Well, if there is, you can expect a blog post about it. With more shovel pictures and shovel facts!

5510888

And even if not, you had already provided the solution:

Very true, I just need to find a bunch of pony friends.

5510898

As I often say: "Never put your snow supplies away until May at the earliest."

Snow tires are still on the van. They’re coming off on Friday, or at least that’s the plan.

5510888

Should anyone tell him he still uses the christmas version of his avatar?

5510979

I was waiting to see how long it would go before he changed it.

I was gonna leave it up until Estee published her blog where I asked her that very question, and now she has.

5510984

Lucky thing then that the world could always use more cute pony pictures. They are, after all, good for the soul. :ajsmug:

This is very true, and it’s a good reason to keep posting them.

5511068

Just saw this and had to think of you.

That is entirely accurate.

Well, nearly so; the pain and suffering part does extend to where the coolant goes, as well.

5511208

Cute pony pictures are the balm for life's torments.

They are! That’s legit what got me into the fandom.

Road trip Trixie was especially adorable! :raritywink:

That’s a great pic.

And I'll take your rambles over others diatribes any and every day.

"Y’all know the rest."
Interesting; it doesn't actually seem to be ringing any bells for me.

Sorry about the snow.

Good luck with the engine installation!

"EFNW is still a toss-up for me, even with the vaccine I’m still not sure I want to commit to crowding in a infectious skytube."
Well, if you have the extra time, there's Amtrak!
(Don't know if that'd work for you, of course, or if you'd already considered it, buuuut I thought I'd mention it anyway, just in case. You )might have picked up by now that I rather like trains. :D)
Good luck with the congoing however it works out, though!

I'm hoping to get some potatoes planted in the garden this week, myself.
And funnily enough, I also have no idea where our shovel is...
Oh, heh, good luck with the lawnmower too, though, in addition to the shovel. :D

And those pony pictures are, indeed, cute. :)
...Though is that pony in the last one wearing a mask or something over the far side of their face?

Apparently, I’m one of the few who fully appreciates what happens on the first of May.

As the saying goes, “May the Fourth be with you” “and with your spirit”

5511560

Interesting; it doesn't actually seem to be ringing any bells for me.

It’s a reference to a NSFW Johnathon Colton song, probably YouTubable if you care to look.

Good luck with the engine installation!

Thanks! Going well so far, that truck was cleaner underneath and most everything came off as intended.

Well, if you have the extra time, there's Amtrak!

I wish I did, but I doubt I could get that much time off work. Maybe . . . I think it’d put another three days on either side of it.

And funnily enough, I also have no idea where our shovel is...

Shovels are good at hiding when you need them.

Oh, heh, good luck with the lawnmower too, though, in addition to the shovel. :D

Thanks! I’ve actually got a good idea where it is, but I haven’t looked to make sure.

...Though is that pony in the last one wearing a mask or something over the far side of their face?

I think that’s just the artist’s style. It looks like something else I saw by that artist, I think, but I’m not entirely certain.

5511981

Apparently, I’m one of the few who fully appreciates what happens on the first of May.

So it would seem. :rainbowlaugh: Years past, lots of people knew, maybe it’s the pandemic getting to all of us.

As the saying goes, “May the Fourth be with you” “and with your spirit”

I always heard “and also with you,” in the Protestant tradition.

5512645
Ah, thanks.
(Though I don't seem to be that interested at the moment.)

Ah, good! :)

Aye, sorry.

It seems so! The closest thing I do know the location of is the blade from the old shovel, the handle of which snapped some time ago.

Ah. :)

[shrugs]
Well, thanks.
