Seems Generation 5 will be so far into the future that magical tech is going to be a thing. Also Pipp and Zipp are siblings apparently.

So being serious for a second, I really don't like that they are modernizing the Gen 4 universe. I think the lack of computers and advanced technology made Gen 4 feel more natural and appealing. Sadly the more stuff gets released about Gen 5, the more I'm not going to be watching it with my kids.
Maybe I'm just being upset and reactionary over nothing, but whenever something about Gen 5 drops, I become more and more dead inside.

Eh. This part is fine for me. I'm pro-technology generally and I roll my eyes at the sentiment I hear repeated often that "kids these days are always on their phones."
Yes, communication technology is far more powerful and affordable today than it was when I was still a kid in the nineties. It's no surprise that "kids these days" use current and highly accessible technology. And there isn't anything wrong with it.
I think that it makes sense to show characters using phones. The body language involved as well as the cultural effects of having that communication available are important. The mindset of having a camera available wherever you go is important. They're important because "kids these days" relate to those body language and culture elements.
In my day, a punishment of "go to your room" hardly had any teeth to it because my books were there. But for awhile that was a punishment my mom thought would matter because she was used to always wanting to go outside and stuff. The TV was in the living room and going to her room meant being cut off from her main source of entertainment. Taking away the phone would be today's likely analogue just as my mom had to figure out how to ban me from reading to punish me.
But you need to accept the baseline premise that they have and use phones in order to be able to take them away for story reasons. And this lets you tell relatable stories to "kids these days."
In other news, that's a pretty clear view of Pipp's underhoof. I wonder if those are shoes or her natural hooves. Solid and flat and shiny/metallic is an interesting choice. They managed to avoid that (possibly completely, I don't recall) in G4. I think (again, don't remember to be sure) they avoided ever having a camera angle and pose that would reveal that in G4.
Though the fact that she can interact with her phone with those (even if they are shoes) is pretty silly and fun.
I donno G4 had a helicopter in one episode.

Basically selective technology such as in fields the technology is modern or so while others medieval.
There are plenty of anime that use this idea. Best example likely being Hunter X Hunter.

EH, Equestria's tech tree has always been fucked. No washing machines, but video games? Also, they built huge skyscrapers in Manehatten, but still travel in carts. So, they've come up with giant cranes and complex metals, but not internal combustion engines?
Like, this would not bother me at all... if it wasn't the G4 world. That said, have they actually confirmed that it's the same world as G4? Like, I know we saw the Mane six action figures, and they did call it "Equestria," but is it actually the same universe?

I can feel you on that. I already cast gen5 in the closet. Artstyle isn't appealing and gives off such an awful vibe and the characters seem not remotely interesting. Basically more hyper active cast (yeah.... more pinki pie knockoffs :P)

I'm starting to think it is not the same universe as we are being lead to believe I mean if you look back at G4 mlp had different forms of technology but still used scrolls to message each other along with spike who used his fire to send letters to the princess along with mail wouldn't they just update there mail system to something more different if not Im just saying ..

Ah, but remember that if this is our Equestria, and they really have "turned their backs on harmony and Friendship," then this means that the world has been spinning so long that alicorns, canonically able to live for thousands of years, are dead and/or gone. SO who knows?

We have precedent for how this can work well. There's really far out there fics that take thousands of years in the future with galaxy spanning pony empires. Those can be fun, but they aren't really something you'd want to see in the cartoons. But we have fun stories where ponies invent, say, fake wings or horns for ponies that can be very interesting.
If they treat this in a fun fantasy way rather than a technological way, it can make things more interesting. For example, Pokemon is usually not super high tech (having only watched 100/10000 of it's pieces of media lol), but they use things like the Pokedex to make the story more interesting and give context, not to immediately solve mysteries or problems. If they use the phone in a limited capacity to communicate in a limited way or to identify plants, then it's fine and relatable. If they use it to look thing up on Ponypedia, then it's going to be a boring letdown.

Well, in a world with unicorns and pegasi, they could get materials into the air without cranes. I'm not sure if the show ever had a real crane like modern construction work uses; maybe in MMDW? But then that episode was already a contender for most-hated episode of the show.
Consider the Pony Life clips. The mane six had smartphones, tablets, streamers, all kinds of modern technology. G5 is on equivalent ground with Pony Life so far, and Pony Life is, I dunno, G4.1? I think the answer will be the same for G4 and G5 being in the same universe as it would be for G1 and G4 being in the same universe; Scorpan, Tirek, The Smooze, Grogar; they were all in G1. That said, I hope they're different continuities.

that is very true if Luna and celestia are dead let's say "they are" along with the other alicorn's and twilight is dead as well or either failed equestria or had modernized all of equestria to the point where they don't need friendship or harmony
2ed is twilight is no where to be found or dead along side the princess or simple went into hiding cause of how things have changed i don't no fully but i hope for some more answers when the movie comes out fully

I agree on all counts.
G4 wasn't perfect (a train in my Romantic village?!), but it got a heck of a lot right. And the rest could be ignored due to "Buy our toys!".
I wasn't all that optimistic about G5 in the first place, but every thing they release about it strips away yet another piece of the tiny bit of hope I have for it.

I'm going to blame this entirely on Twilight being infected by the technology bug when she crossed through the mirror portal. Sunset Shimmer, being thoroughly indoctrinated by technology, didn't help any as she crossed back and forth to further spread it.
