Actually makes a lot of sense. Japan adopted a lot of American culture following WWII. What's more, KFC in Japan is sort of a middle-tier, 'nicer' kind of restaurant, being 'foreign food.' To merge the quintessential American holiday with the quintessential American restaurant was a stroke of marketing genius, which has now been around enough to become tradition.
