D&D: why the new OGL is really bad

There's some controversy right now about the new OGL (Open Gaming License) published by Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Dungeons & Dragons.

I don't talk about D&D here a lot, since I know it's not relevant to Fimfiction, but I think it's worth getting this news out. Also they're owned by Hasbro, the same company that own MLP, so it's worth knowing what they're up to.

I don't wish to be rude, but I do want to make a point. Your various online identities are all connected, and anybody who cares to scrape the internet can easily link your Fimfiction identity to your Facebook or Twitter, and to your real name (question 1), address (question 3), and so on. The answers you give to these quiz things contribute to the big pot of information held about you in various huge databases.

There are real bad guys out there. They want your money. They want your vote. They want to know who you're connected to, what your social media bubble looks like, and what the best ways are to trick you into giving these away.

I'm going to generously assume your online banking password isn't any of the 50 answers you gave. But if you forget your password, what will the bank ask you to confirm your identity? Is it your pet's name? Is it your marital status? Is it a memorable word, that could be your favourite TV show or your favourite superhero? Every piece of information you give, especially in an easily-parsed form like this, makes their job easier.

It's 2020. The web has been around for 30 years, bad guys absolutely exist, and it's a mistake to go filling in these things.

One of the main reasons I don't plan on filling this one out.

Your point is entirely valid.

Just to be clear, are you suggesting people would actually answer "What country are you from?" with their home address? If yes, it shows a low a bar you put on human intelligence. On the other hand, if you're suggesting "They" can have an easier time finding your home address because you've stated what country you're from, that's more reasonable.

I'm only adding this 'cause I think clarity is in order. The last thing you want is some smart-ass coming along going "A-hyuk, a-hyuk, nobody's gonna answr that wth they're home adress, ya puranoid returd! So dump."

But... but... I want to know who your favorite pony is :raritydespair:

She's your banking password isn't she

No, but if there are 19 people in the world with the same name, even just knowing which country or state you live in can make it easier to connect to the right identity. I know of at least two people on the internet with my name, both of them in a different country.

I'm aware that many of the questions here are things I've mentioned at some point in the past, either in blog posts or comments. I'm not suggesting you wear a tinfoil hat 24/7. But putting all these answers in one place in an easily-parsed format makes any attacker's job too easy.

Good thing I never fill these out with my password and banking information! :')

This is the point where I wave my hands theatrically and go "See, see?"

It might be wishful thinking to presume you're not already identified and profiled.

- being (pseudo) anonymous still have downsides - namely, no-one will come to help you when bad guys come to you, too ......

Thanks to immigrant parents I've got an extremely unusual first name for the country I live in, to the point I suspect I might well be the only one, so I'm definitely wary of that!

Even leaving fraud etc. aside, I don't mind people knowing I'm a brony (I used to turn up at court with my keys on a Pinkie Pie keychain), but I might draw the line at wanting people to know I wrote unabashed clop. (Which, yes, technically makes it not wholly "unabashed", but whatever.)

That said, I wish to raise a complaint. You clearly provided a truthful answer for question 50, which is not only a combo breaker but also makes a lie of your headline :twistnerd:

The most immediate danger is making it easy to link several online identities to the same person (if you have those, of course, and don't actually want that). Cross social media platform harassment and people being hounded off the internet happens all the time. Especially if you're engaging in activities under one pseudonym that you really don't want to show up anywhere else.

I mean, I have my patreon under my real name, people know I'm Aussie, that I'm an old fart is not news either, nor is my sexual alignment a surprise to most people who know me well. The only things that I think were "new" information on this was my favorite song right now and my religion (WBTBWB's Cliks Likes Fame Geil and Jedi respectively).

If you're a more private person, that's fine, but this blog comes off like a person who always proselytizes about how terrible <insert social media platform here> and how no one should use it—then complains about being left out of things.
