    BABSCon 2024

Hi y'all, sorry I've been dead on this site for a while, but for any of those who are still out there...I will once again be at BABSCon 2024 in Burlingame, CA, from Mar 29 to 31!

And I'll likely be in my Twilight or Opaline cosplay. Hope to see y'all there!

About profile pictures. · 7:17pm Aug 30th, 2020

So...I have a thing about profile pictures.

Don't y'all find it weird when the profile picture doesn't match the tone of the user's comment?

Examples (fictional, but inspired by actual comments):

Thank you, your review of my story was very insightful. I really value your opinion. Could you elaborate more on what you thought of the battle scene in chapter 5?

O MY FCUKING GOD go 2 hell you stupid fuking bitch altright altright altrite I hate your fooking guts your a peice of shitt

Amen to this. Racism and Nazism has no place in the brony community, and it is most definitely not something to laugh and snicker about.

I'm so sorry that your brother comitted suicide. My condolences go to your family.

To avoid embarrassing situations like above, profile pictures should have a neutral expression and background, so it's appropriate for a variety of comments. One good example is my profile picture (shameless self-plug).

Other good examples of profile pictures, at the time of writing, are Admiral Biscuit and Ice Star, among many (many) others.

Icons and symbols are okay for a profile picture (e.g. The Cloptimist, Trick Question), but I personally prefer to have a face, so it feels like you're communicating with "someone".

Neither do I like changing profile pictures regularly based on my mood. Because my profile pic is kinda like my identity on this site. And if I change profile pics too often, I feel like I'm sort of "trivializing" my identity. Please don't get mad at me Forgetful.

So, what do y'all think? Should there be certain "guidelines" to follow when it comes to profile pictures?

Didn't think about that... kinda wondering if I should change my profile pic now.

Noice.

Well... shoot.

Guilty as hell on this one. Oops... :fluttershyouch:

I think it's because I'm a joker on this site. I do see what you mean though; it can be confusing to keep track of people when they change constantly.

Well... that was... interesting?

These are all my personal opinions. No need to take it too seriously. We're all here to have fun, right...?

Of course. It's why I joined in the first place. That and some awesome stories. :yay:

I usually just stick with fuzzy and cute ponies as much as possible. :/

I like having a neutral symbol mostly for that very reason!

My profile has just a small smile. That seems fairly neutral.

A couple times I've interpreted someone's tone a little differently because of their profile picture. Like if someone has a profile of a someone with an intense expression, I could read their tone as a bit more serious.

taking this into account for my next profile pic!

TBH my opinions have kind of changed on this subject since I posted this. I have become somewhat of a hypocrite, having changed my pfp a few times in the past year. :pinkiecrazy: I still think there should be a face to see, but just find an image that speaks to you.

While I do agree that profile picture shouldn’t change that much (after all the profile pictures are sort of a ‘brand’), I personally think there’s bigger things than profile pictures to have a problem with.

I don’t think there should be profile picture guidelines, that seems necessarily restricting.

(Feel free to disregard this entirely because I didn’t notice your response to Bicyclette)
