What the fuck you're still alive?

i never got to thank you for following my "It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane." bookshelf a couple years ago

sooo thanks :fluttershysad:

That doesn't make it less good to know that you're well enough to post.

Wow... You are alive. Glad to see you're still here with us all.

ooh, nice to see you're alive!

I still have no idea why we had that war. I have yet to hear a reasonable explanation that makes any sense.

I'm not cynical enough to believe it was just for money. There are lots of ways to get money.

And a lot of terrorists died. Good riddance.

Well howdy!! It's good to hear from you

We had that war because of a collective anger left over from 9/11 towards Muslims in general, and we already wern't big fans of Saddam. At the Iraq wars start it had considerably more than 50% approval, it was close to 75%. It was a mistake, but anger easily leads to mistakes like that.

It’s hardly like it’d be the first time the U.S. started a war for money, though if Iraq War 2: Electric Boogaloo was then it might very well be the first the U.S. directly participated in to such an obvious extent. It’s more likely that the Iraq War was neo‐conservative realpolitik in action; look up the Project for a New American Century. This article seems like a good springboard (though you will want to trace the timeline back through it). This one also seems promising.

Those would be the reasons the American public went along with it, not why it was started.

But Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, and all the evidence we went to war with was extremely flimsy, having been propped up by the Pentagon under orders from the executive branch. None of that explains why the executive branch pushed the Pentagon to invade that specific country.

The best guess I have is that a neocon worldview where nation-building might work was presented, but I can't believe the Pentagon would sign onto that, and it was risky and unnecessary in the wake of 9/11. Maybe we had to go to war with somepony quickly and Iran was too powerful? It makes zero sense.

I am happy to see you are still alive. Please continue living.

The executive branch at that time was George W. Bush, a man who was driven by revenge for Saddam's attempted assassination of his father. And the man in the Pentagon he had to "convince" was then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, one of the key backers of the first Gulf War (W's vice president, Dick Cheney, was also a key backer of the first war.)

Nothing about that war makes rational sense, because nobody involved in making it happen was doing it for rational reasons. It was a combination of greed, vengeance, pride, and a substantial helping of corruption with a little bit of nepotism sprinkled on top, all propped up by widespread anger coupled with islamophobia that basically meant they had a window of opportunity where they could do whatever the fuck they wanted and get the country to back them on it if they gave it the right spin.

You could spend the rest of your life searching for a rational underpinning to that war and you will never find it, because it does not exist. In short, yes, the reasons for going to war in Iraq post-9/11 really were that shallow.

Feel free to downvote me if I'm being paranoid, but this is starting to remind me of /u/istherelifeafterlyme from Reddit.
