Okay, writers. Who the hay do you think you're kidding? After Forever Filly, it's way too obvious. Rarity is Sweetie Belle's real mom. That's why her (grand)parents constantly leave her with Rarity. That scene in Sleepless in Ponyville where Rarity comforts Sweetie by telling her that she could sleep with her was something I just passed off as Rarity being kind at the time, but then when the CMC got their cutie marks Rarity is shown singing to Sweetie and telling her how proud of her she was and it looked just like a mother talking to her daughter. And in Forever Filly, Rarity frets over Sweetie growing up. That's not the reaction of a big sister. That's the reaction of a mother. Look how Sweetie always hangs out with Rarity, to the point that she has her own room at Rarity's place. Sweetie is almost never shown with her own parents. It's clear she's far closer to Rarity and sees her as her primary caretaker.
I'm not saying it was that way originally, but that does seem to be the direction the last few seasons have gone in. Sisterhooes Social doesn't paint that picture. However, even in fanfiction, Rarity acts more like a mother than a big sister. I read a story where Rarity sang Sweetie a lullaby, where she was called to the school when Sweetie got in trouble, stories where she wants to spend more time with Rarity, idolizes and admires her. Even the fan art shows Rarity acting in a maternal way, feeding and tucking her in. That's fans picking up on subtle clues, perhaps even unconsciously.
The alternative is that Rarity's parents are awful Ponies who've abandoned their youngest daughter. And yes, I know big sisters can take care of their younger sisters in a motherly way (I've been on the receiving end myself) but all the TIME?
So having said that; does this mean that Rarity's parents assumed legal guardianship because their daughter had an unplanned pregnancy in her late teens?

So guesstemation on what age rarity would have sweetie? Out of all the mane six, rarity and fluttershy look/are the oldest.

Maybe she got pregnant fairly young (even for pony standards) or was in a bad spot so Raritys parents had to take care of the child unilt Rarity got her life together. Sweetie Belle just never connected the dots that shes like a decade younger then her "sister". (Though even that wouldnt be impossible).
I mean AJ is in a similar boat.
Alternative is, what we have seen from the parents so far, is they got Sweetie when they were close to retiremenet, now that shes grown up enough that Rarity can take care of her they spend their retirement traveling the world.
Most of that evidence really doesn't point to parenthood. All the CMC's older siblings spoke to them that way (you could be simultaneously arguing that they're all like parents to their siblings, too, and that's a whole different argument. In the meantime, it's not much of a point). I can tell you, at least in my experience, that older siblings certainly can do some of those parentsims you mentioned, especially when there's that big of an age gap and they've been kind of like a third parent in their family. Letting me sleep in her room, even reading aloud to me? My sister did that, and I'm friends with an older sibling who does that. My parents did the same for their younger siblings. Worrying about her growing up? Oh, shit, yes. In fact, Forever Filly suggests they don't always live together; the setup was that Rarity hadn't seen her in ages and barely knew a thing about her.
If that's your headcanon, fine. Watch the show however you want. But it's not canon, and those really aren't convincing points.

You raise some valid points, but what bothers me is Sweetie's parents seeming absence. Maybe we're seeing things from Rarity's perspective so it's a bit myopic?

Her parents being absent is concerning, that's true. And I think it'd be concerning even if Rarity was Sweetie's biological parent, because what difference should that make? They've been her guardians all along, and Rarity's too busy with her branching businesses and being on Twilight's team.
I like this theory, though it's entirely possible that her parents just really, really suck. I mean at this point we've seen more of Applebloom's parents and they're god damned dead!
I remember there was a story a long time ago that dealt with this idea. That may have been around the time that "AJ and Big Mac are AB's parents." gained some traction given how it seems AJ's parents died when she was very young (before she got her cutiemark), and there's no way AB'd have been born yet.
And of course Scootaloo's an orphan. Those three ideas were, at least for a time, the prevailing "alternate parentage explanations" through the fandom.
personal I go with that they are mother and daughter but rarity was far to young to keep sweetie so rarity parent said it was they and never told sweetie belle. and when rarity was just getting start with her dress they raise sweetie belle till rarity could handle it.
also I personal think twilight is in fact shiny armor and princess Candace child. but they were far to young to raise her so shinny's parent toke twilight in and raise her with Candace help.
