The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Fuckin' Disney magic · 1:09am Sep 20th, 2018

So, I was watching this trailer...

And part of me is picking out all the bits that either homage or directly mirror the original movie.

And the rest of me is going OH MY GOD IT'S FUCKING MARY POPPINS HOLY SHIT OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

I didn't like Tron 2. I didn't care about Christopher Robin. But Mary Poppins Returns? That is my jam. And even if it doesn't live up to the hype I am so obviously awash in at this moment, even if it's just another soulless cash-in, yet another inexplicable entry in the mind-bogglingly long list of latter-day sequels and reboots no one asked for, I can already tell it's going to be an event.

And I was kind of shocked when she started singing, until I remembered Emily Blunt sang the best song in the MLP movie, that's kind of why I wrote that thing, y'know? And Angela Lansbury's in it! And Dick van Dyke is essentially reprising his secondary role from the original movie, how cool is that? (Yes, he's playing the younger Mr. Dawes, but they're clearly playing around with familiar resemblance, and I find that terribly clever.)

Oh man. :D I'm just so jazzed right now.

Disney has a direct line to the nostalgia part of the brain and they are gonna pump that sucker for every dollar they can. And we're gonna let them and we're gonna enjoy it.

I probably won't like it as much as the original. Julie Andrews is the only Mary Poppins I knew.

Dick van Dike is still alive? Good for him.

The only thing I don't know if I like is it looks like they're going back to the same cartoons they did the first time (with the penguins and such) and I really want to see new stuff. But it looks great!

Well. I guess now I’m obligated to watch the original. It’s been so long that I’ve forgotten everything about it.

How could you? D:

I mean, I haven't!

4940780
Really? It's been literal years since I last watched it, and I can still quote almost the entire thing. You still know the songs, right? Please tell me you AT LEAST can still sing "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"!

I don't think I've ever sat through Mary Poppins all the way through. I think there are penguins at some point? Neat though. Hopefully the Disney Curse of Awful Unnecessary Sequels doesn't hold here.

I've never watched Mary Poppins.
I've never watched The Wizard of Oz for that matter.

"Tuppens a baaaag" always makes me break down in tears. ALWAYS :raritydespair:

Yo Mary Poppins is my JAM. Just one of many haha. I grew up on so many old Disney movies like that (or not Disney, like Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang). When she sings about the saints and apostles on St. Paul's Cathedral I get such chills man. Good stuff.

You ever watch a 90's movie called Winnie the Pooh's Grand Adventure? One reviewer called it a film that doesn't quite feel like a kids film but obviously isn't geared to adults either. I loved it though. Still do.

I do love Tron: Legacy though, for all its faults haha.

They can't give it the Star Wars treatment...

They just can't!

Shit, I just remembered I have another Mary Poppins fic I need to write. c.c Maybe I should do this.

4940804
Yes, yes, I remember Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Pretty much the only thing I remember, and that only because my parents bought 'the kids' a Disney singalong video songs from assorted Disney movies. I'm sure they regretted it after the 1,000th time my sister, brother, and I sang the songs on it.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure that I've ever seen the movie from beginning to end. If I did, I was too young to recall it.

I didn't care about Christopher Robin.

We can no longer be friends. Good-bye.

Dick Van Dyke plays a banker? Dick Van Dyke is still alive?!
I hope the new guy is like a son of Dick's old character because man is he short compared to Poppins.

Anyway I'm sure with all the money loss I'm sure Disney will do their damndest to keep things more coherent and true to the original source than they've been going about things. Especially if they want China to be housing any if their movies in theaters.

Trailer looks fantastic at least.

Please tell me you AT LEAST can still sing "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"!

To forget that would be quite atrocious.

Dick Van Dyke is still alive. And looks exactly the same as in the 1964. Mary Poppins is still young. This calls for a Mary Poppins / Twilight crossover.

I'm pretty sure Mary Poppins is a Highlander. :B

4941077
Well, there can be only one. :raritywink:

4941065 "Coming, coming!" called out Night Light as he scurried down the stairs, around the stacks of slightly singed books, stepped over the Junior Guard Authentic Armor Breastplate And Helmet, and drew up short in front of the house's front door. Running a quick hoof through his ruffled mane, he swung the door open while launching into his practiced speech. "I'm sorry about the smoke and the fire department again, but you know how foals are when they get the alchemy set unpacked and a few extra ingredients get added to their experiments, but we've got-- Oh," he added, blinking at the possibly middle-aged but maybe just a few years younger mare standing on his doorstep with an umbrella crooked over her foreleg. "Beg pardon, I thought it was the neighbors again."

"You are the father of Twilight Sparkle and Shining Armor, are you not?" The earth pony mare opened up her purse and removed a sheet of paper that looked as if it had been torn up at one time, but was now sticking together just because it was afraid of coming apart again. "Now, then. The qualifications."

"Oh, you're here about the nanny position," said Night Light abruptly. "I'm sorry, but Princess Cadence was sent over by Princess Celestia just an hour ago. She's up with Twilight right now, helping clean her room and de-animating all of the furniture." A chaise lounge took that moment to go galloping past, followed by a small unicorn and a moderate-sized alicorn who shrieked with joy at the pursuit.

"Ah, a Chased Lounge," said the mare. "A true classic. I see my niece has things well in hoof, Mister Night Light. I shall bid you good day. Oh, and if you could give me directions to Rock City. I have another employment possibility there."

This makes me happy. :)

until I remembered that Emily Blunt sang the best song in the MLP movie

I bet that opened up your eyes, eh? :trollestia:

4941077
Wait... so if somepony chops off her head... they get her power? :rainbowdetermined2:
Then the theme song would make so much more sense...

Here, we are!
Born to be Queen!
We’re the princesses of the universe!

4941065
Fortunately, he does not look like he does in his originl Mr. Dawes makeup.
