How many 'a's and 'h's is too many? An autobiography by Justice3442 · 4:05am Aug 21st, 2017

It's back! Again! For the second time!

Apparently, some mod thought there was an overabundance of 'a's and 'h's in the title and long description. This has been trimmed after consultation with a different mod!

So, uh... Hopefully, the story will stay up unabused at this time?

We'll see! And if you have no clue what I'm talking about, feel free to check out the tagged story and you can see what is somehow my most controversial story yet, and this is coming from someone who's written a crossover with a talking butt! :rainbowlaugh:

EDIT: And FEATURED! Again! For the third time! Like a mighty sun rising over the mountain top and sharing it's light and screams with everyone! Let's hope it falls off the box naturally this time! :twilightblush:

Jesus Christ, just how damn picky are the mods on this site?

4642793

Well, there are multiple mods. I think my first pass-through fixed things enough for most, but apparently someone else, seemingly uninvolved with the first revocation, came along. To be fair regarding the first, I had forgotten about the rule regarding descriptions that actually describe the story, so I felt that was a bit understandable.

4642804
It's ruined.
It went through the borders, it was so beautiful.
I mean the fic itself is still great, but, as a fan of breaking the borders...

4642807
Hahaha. I know, right?! :rainbowlaugh:

4642804
Good grief. Why can't all the mods look through a fic before it's uploaded?

Of course, I had my fair share of picky mods, as I tried to upload a fic, but it got denied because it was copying too much. And of course, there are far worse offenders in that category, yet I still see them on this site.

The mods have a vendetta against my long titles too. I feel your pain.

4642825
There are a loooooot of fics dude.
A loooot of fics, every day.
There a multiple mods so one mod doesn't have to cover a single fic.

Although if a fic is already approved, it would be nice to run it by the other mods before going, "I'm nuking this fic."

4642804 As someone whose writing career started by writing a guide book for newly made alicorns which was taken down and only put back up when I wrote a story around said guide, I feel your pain.

4642807

The first version broke right through the title panel, ran all over the ad on the right, and just kept going.

The feature box description was blank because it couldn't fit...

It was so awesome.

So to recap: When Justice submitted this story, some mod approved it and it was put up. A while later, one or more mods saw it and said, "Nah dude, the title is too long and the description doesn't describe, fix it." After it was fixed to their approval, another mod came along and said, "Well I think the title is still too long, fix it." And here we are now. That about cover it?

4642963
I actually put it through automatic approval first. So first time there was no approval process as authors who have published more than three stories can generally skip it.

The first revokationg, the issue was the title length (it escaped the frame/story box on some pages) and the lack of description. The second thing being a rule violation that I forgot about :twilightblush:. I fixed both things and republished where the story was up for well over a day.

Then apparently another mod came by and decided that the name must be shorter as well as the "aaaaahhhs" in the description. I will say this revocation happened sans a message and I had to reach out to another mod to figure out what happened. Though, he and I got it sorted.

So now it's back up and hopefully it'll stay that way.

4642971
Awesome. Glad that got sorted. How a crackfic so simple nearly caused the whole site to implode, I'll never understand.

We get shit like Cupcakes, Rainbow Factory and Sweet Apple Massacre and yet an absurd comedy about a screaming sun is what breaks the site. Oi vey...

In the sense that we are wishing you consensual frequent and healthy sexual intercourse, yes, fuck those mods.

The fact the title broke through and kept on going was legendary :rainbowlaugh: And it was a funny story dude, so props! :yay:

It was brought up on the Discord channel, and has thereby been commemorated forever:

I suggested a small tweak to the site's css:
.title, .title-box { overflow: hidden; text-overflow: ellipsis; }

Oh, that is glorious. :rainbowlaugh:

I can see why some people are a bit peeved at the story. Messing up your self-publish is supposed to be 'treated more harshly', but in this case it simply rewards you with extra time in the feature box for each time it's been taken down and republished. That doesn't seem very fair to those who follow the rules or have a tough time getting their own stories featured.

4644464
Complaints about the story from readers haven't been from any rule violations, except for the description which got fixed after the first revocation. Those comments turned into something of a flame war that had very little to do with my story and was started because of some potentially inflammatory language that may or may not have been intended to come across as such. This is the first comment regarding the story sticking around in the box for this long.

I can also tell you that revocation seems to reset some sort of 'score' used to determine if the story is feature of even popular box worthy. While it's possibly the story being removed twice and garnering the score it needed to be featured twice somehow increased which days it's been in the box, it's also been kicked out twice and a fair amount of that time meant no one was able to see it.

I understand frustration regarding getting readers to view certain stories quite well, but in this case, it seems the story has been this visible based on readers approval of what they've read. From my perspective, it seems revocation is unlikely to do an author any favors regardless of the reason. Somehow, this story just happens to have the staying power to overcome such things. Suggesting I've gotten 'extra time' in the box may seem reasonable from an outside perspective, but knowing that the story has had to essentially climb back up from '0' or however the scoring system work, makes me feel that, at BEST, the revocations have had little effect on the NET time it's spent in the feature box. In fact, the story has likely missed some viewership.

Good luck with your stories in the future. I know getting a story the recognition an author thinks it deserves is often an uphill battle.

4644729
I think it's more of a 'score' decay each day a story is featured in the box. Say a brand new story gets 50 views within an hour it might bump down another with 150 views in the same time frame, assuming the latter has already been featured for a day or so. This score decay seemed to have been reset each time AAAHHH was republished.

I think it was mostly noticeable after the last takedown, where I remember seeing AAAHHH move to a well-deserved top spot, then gradually it went down like any other, until I remember seeing it at the bottom. It then vanished, and I presumed it went out of the feature box for good. But it somehow went back in and started actually climbing again, and since it's impossible for a story to get back into the box after leaving it, unless updated, it made it seem like something iffy was going on.

I don't believe this was intentional in any way, but if the above statements are true (of course there might be another explanation) it means there are ways to keep a story in the box longer than intended. As for the so called drama, I don't think anyone actually complained about the story itself, just how it was presented.

4645372
Stories can fall in and out of the update slots towards the bottom (or bottom of the NEW story slots). Again, I'm not 100% certain of how scoring works, but it seems if something gets into the box and doesn't have much activity, it quickly falls out and cand replaced by whatever it knocked out. Keeping tabs on the box this last weekend, I noticed many things that got in were actually fairly low scoring, all things considered. Say... stuff with upvotes well under 30 with a grip of downvotes. So, though my story would fall off back to the popular box, the activity there and lack of activity on the new stories would often be enough for it to climb back into the box. I've seen this happen before with stories, so falling out of the box and ending up back in is not uncommon provided something is new enough.

While this definitely seems odd, I'm guessing if something more out of the ordinary was at foot, it'd have been more pronounced.
