Here's just a basic example of what I mean. IIRC, black printing is 6 cents for two sides at my school. BP is ~400 pages or so, probably more, on 81/2"x11" paper. Do the math, 200 sheets of paper*.06=$12.00. That's not too bad, although it doesn't include making/purchasing the binding.
Color printing is 50 cents for 1 side! So that would cost a wonderful $400 to print it. (It might be 50 cents for two sides, like the black and white. Still, that's $200.)
You might be able to do an order where you only pay extra for the pages that actually have color. That doesn't sound too bad, until you remember the entire chapter of Alabaster's flashback. Or all of the sections in the unsung realm. Or how frequently Lyra says her name, polluting that page. It'd still be an arm and a leg. Which is really depressing, because this story deserves to be printed out...
