Pathetic Earthlings, who can save you now? · 3:25pm Sep 30th, 2012

Okay, so it's come to my notice that a lot of people haven't seen the 1980 Flash Gordon movie. A lot of people haven't even heard of it!

I have no idea how this could possibly be true, but there it is. I mean, it's a classic! It's one of the greatest sci-fi/fantasy films ever made! I thought everyone in the world had watched it at least ten times!

This film was one of my favourites when I was little, despite (perhaps because of) how much parts of it scared me. This is how to make an iconic film without five tons of CGI messing everything up. It has Brian Blessed doing lots of shouting! Timothy Dalton having a whip fight in a sky palace! Peter Wyngarde in a weird gold Dr Doom mask! Max Von Sydow! Soundtrack by Queen!

Seriously, if you are one of those people who have never seen it (and if so that makes you a terrible person) rectify this right now! I can't work out how you can possibly write any sci-fi or fantasy without experiencing this film first.

Luckily for you, it's on the youtube. No excuse! Go go go!

Well I guess this is why I don't write sci-fi or fantasy :applejackunsure:

Talking ponies are fantasy!

Yes, they are!

But... but... I have a maths exam tomorrow! Screw it. Watching anyway.

Fricking loved that movie.

That and it has Brian Blessed as a freaking a Bird King!

FLASH A-AH SAVIOR OF THE UNIVERSE

I have picked up doing that from Venture Bros, just because it annoys people.

I know it shouldn't be 'the Youtube' but it sounds hilarious :twilightsheepish:

BLUESHIFT

I LOVE YOU, BUT WE ONLY HAVE FOURTEEN HOURS TO SAVE THE EARTH

Oh my god you actually posted it. Blues. What have you done.

I meant fantasy within the framework of ponies. Obviously magic talking brightly colored horses are fantasy.

So, like, It's a Dangerous Business and such.

I am improving your lives!

The attack on the "warrocket" is still the best part of the movie.

It ain't nowhere near greatest, but it's one of the funniest, most enjoyable ones ever. It probably has the world record of scenes chewed per minute, just between Max von Sydow's Ming and Brian Blessed's Voltan, not counting Princess Aura or Dr. Zarkov or Klytus. And it has a kick-ass soundtrack!

Really, other than Brian Blessed (and who can top that), my favourite part of this movie was (stolen borrowed from wikipedia):

Zogi, the High Priest: Do you, Ming the Merciless, Ruler of the Universe, take this Earthling Dale Arden, to be your Empress of the Hour?
The Emperor Ming: Of the hour, yes.
Zogi, the High Priest: Do you promise to use her as you will?
The Emperor Ming: Certainly!
Zogi, the High Priest: Not to blast her into space?
[Ming glares at Zogi]
Zogi, the High Priest: Uh, until such time as you grow weary of her.
The Emperor Ming: I do.
Dale Arden: I do NOT!

This is a beautiful piece of art. A muscle-filled hammy piece of beautiful art.

Welp, time to watch this.
And my only excuse for having never heard of this is I was born in '98. There are a freaking ton of movies I've never watched but I need to. I've seen about two episodes of Star Trek, never seen a classic Doctor Who episode, never seen The Matrix, never actually watched Firefly, and many other things. Bring upon me your replies of utter disappointment.

I had this movie on my RCA Selectavision C.E.D. Videodisc player. Good times, the 80's...

When people mention Flash Gordon, I always think of The Flash. Possibly mixed with Hal GordonJordan. I've never read a comic, no, they're just more recognisable names.

393772 Disappointment? I'm impressed that you're getting on the ball so early. I was born way back in '92 and am in exactly the same position. Heck, 'til about a year ago I'd never seen the Disney classics (The Lion King etc) either, and who hasn't seen those?

393593 Damnit, I was gonna say that...

I've seen this film, twice.

I didn't like it.

Either time.

:ajsmug:

This has long been a personal favorite of mine as well. Though I have some of the old original serials lying around the house someplace, they aren't as captivating.

SFDebris does a very good review of it, if you're interested, here:
http://sfdebris.com/videos/films/flashgordon.asp

While he's mostly known for being angry at Voyager, SFDebris also sometimes reviews things he enjoyed and in those cases his reviews can provide a fresh look for those who favor the film.

Seen the last 10-15 minutes or so three times now but never any more. Think I'll actually watch the full film tonight. Gotta be up in under 8 hours but having spent the past hour being locked in my bathroom & subsequently clambering out of the window into the arms of a housemate while half-dressed I don't particularly feel like sleep just yet.
This had better be worth it, Blueshift! *fist shake*

EDIT: Oh wow.

393594
He's doing what he has to do to save us all.

Onward, my brave pegasi! Let this be known forever as Blueshift's Day! :flutterrage:

Seen it like 5 times. So freaky. It's to Sci-Fi adventure what Big Troubgle in Little China was to martial arts horror.

>1980 Flash Gordon
wat

This movie is an amazing movie and I love it and I didn't even know it was on the youtubes. Man.

Well, guess I'm not accomplishing anything anytime soon!

Anyways...
I'll watch it tomorrow. Sleep really screws up my schedule.

>Hadn't seen Lion King until s/he was 19ish

I don't know how to phrase this without sounding like a dick but I feel the need to say this:
I'm not gonna say your parents were bad people, but they severely deprived you of an amazing childhood experience. The Lion King was the best thing ever made when I was a kid.

394871 I know. We just... weren't movie-watchers, I guess. :unsuresweetie:
The silver lining is that I can watch movies now free from nostalgia filters. So I can say that the Lion King really was an excellent movie. But that just makes it sadder that I originally missed out on it.

That movie
Was so stupid
That it was stupid
I found myself laughing
At just how stupid
It really was
My god

You have my undying gratitude for exposing more folks to this awesome film! It should be mandatory screening in schools damnit!

BLUESHIFT, YOU ARE CORRUPTING THE YOUTH OF FIMFICTION!
Now drink your hemlock.

394113 Ahh, the traditional 'I don't like what you like and that makes me badass somehow' remark, oh how i missed you.

Why did you stop returning my calls? I THOUGHT WHAT WE HAD WAS SPECIAL!?!?

Would you mind posting the original?
I might be willing to spend another hour-and-two-thirds on watching it.
