    Words in print

Recently, I've been asked for permission by Avonder to include Whom The Princesses Would Destroy... in a story anthology he's putting together. I'm not one for hoarding words and I gave it quite, quite gladly.

    You'll find it here.

    Now(TM) with Travel Advice

I'm safely ensconced in my hotel room in Ludwigsburg. Hope to meet at least some of you. To increase the odds of this happening, I offer the following advice:

    Soon(TM)

I will be flying to Galacon 2018 in under twelve hours and I expect I will be safely in Ludwigsburg within 24 hours. I will be hard to contact during this period, though I think I've acquired a method of fool-proof Internet access no matter where I am (aside from six miles straight up, of course).

Hope to see many of you soon!

    Happy July 20th!

...or July 21st, depending on your timezone.

49 years ago the first manned Moon landing was accomplished. It is one of my favorite moments in history (To learn about my favorite you may have to wait for December the 9th), and to celebrate I've re-edited Hoofprints to be a little less... ah, draft-y.

From @Kyle Marquis (@Moochava) via Twitter:

Yearly reminder: unless you're over 60, you weren't promised flying cars.

You were promised an oppressive cyberpunk dystopia.

Here you go.

Well, shit.

No, I was promised a post-nuclear fantasy wasteland with mutant telepathic animals.

Not enough cyber, then.

(No TerminatorVision (tm), cortex vaults, or pop-up claws covered in deadly neurotoxin? I feh at it.)

Whenever somebody uses the word (or prefix) "cyber", I assume they're talking about "cybersex". It generally makes as much sense as anything else they could be saying.

I got exactly what I expected. Each day different than the last, both good and for ill. Because no matter what happens, we evolve.

I wasn’t promised that, either. I don’t think you were, for that matter.

In fact, I had a book containing detailed descriptions of things I was promised, an anthology of essays with gorgeous color artwork. They were all predictions due on a specific year. Often, rather conflicting. The binding eventually snapped and the book was lost piece by piece. I was never able to track down a new copy.

The list of things I remember from it included underwater settlements, and no cyberpunk dystopia.

In fact, the idea of a computer network was completely alien to all the authors in there.

I was promised mutant superpowers! >:|

Or, at least, that's what I expected...

On the plus side, the graphics are better. However, I own disappointingly few black leather jumpsuits.

This sounds fascinating.

Look at an EPCOT Center promotional brochure from 1984. That is what I was promised.

I am 42, I was promised hover boards and life on Mars

I don't know what you're talking about. I was promised flying cars, hoverboards, strange fashion trends in youth culture, 80's nostalgia, and the Cubs winning the World Series. Three out of five isn't half bad.

Okay, so, on the plus side we are getting closer to it being perfectly permissible to wear a trench coat again, though it comes with the prerequisite of saying, "Go go gadget [X]!"

They have developed cybernetic prosthetics that can feel to a limited degree.

We are getting there. :pinkiecrazy:

If Elon Musk has anything to say about it, Mars gets more and more possible.

Everything can be hacked!

And everyone.

- Sombra

To be honest, I find it kind of amusing that people are surprised by any of this. I assume that any Internet-connected device can be and in fact has been hacked by at least one person. Maybe that's just my ridiculous cynicism, but somehow, it doesn't even bother me. Spies gonna spy.

I'm not surprised, but allow me to still be pissed about it.

I'm angry that it got leaked, does that count? :trollestia:

I don't recall being promised anything, but I prefer to look on the positive side when something in the present looks like what people in the past imagined the future would look like because it means things aren't stagnant.

The people I encounter on the road every day have enough trouble dealing with two dimensions. It would be reckless and irresponsible to introduce a third

That's a great quote.

Psh. Back To The Future promised me flying cars. I'm from '83, and the movie is from '85. It totally counts :trixieshiftleft:
