Experiments in Poor Judgment 2: Judgm Harder · 1:37am Apr 17th, 2014

Fact 1: I will be at Babscon this weekend.
Fact 2: So will Bradel.
Fact 3: So will our laptops.
Fact 4: So will alcohol.

This plan could not possibly go wrong.

"But Horizon," you cry, "that's not a plan! It's a loosely structured series of implications —"

— COULD. NOT. POSSIBLY. GO. WRONG.

So yeah: In two days, late-ish Friday night, probably starting about 10 PM Pacific time (GMT -0800), Bradel and I are going to begin consuming uncomfortable amounts of alcohol, retreat to an Undisclosed Location with Internet access, and then sit down to livewrite. Livefic. Whatever.

This will most likely involve something along the lines of opening a google doc and typing amid the distractions and snark of whoever wants to open up the doc with us and play peanut gallery, while our brains increasingly shut down. Bradel's done it before, and he's got some Plans for his writing time around. Me? Maybe I can talk him into tag-teaming his story for a truly collaborative experience, or maybe I'll Occupy Page 2 and do something completely ridiculous to his semi-serious, like write crossover Twilight Sparkle/Flatland geometric porn.[1]

Want to see what gets metaphorically pooped onto the keyboard in that sweet spot while our judgment centers are flatlined and the typing centers still work? Keep an eye here or on Bradel's blog on Friday night and we'll link with the linkies.

Also, a shout-out to my fellow authors attending Babscon: There is NOTHING for fanfic content on Saturday. Anyone want to try to cadge together an impromptu author gather, say, 5 pm Saturday for an hour or two? If they'll let us take over unused con space (not guaranteed), maybe we could go occupy Quills & Sofas; or cram into someone's hotel room (volunteers?), or just swarm the atrium until we start getting dirty looks from the hotel staff?

--
[1] Disclaimer: Flatland porn not guaranteed. I may just tease you with it all night while I write something differently demented.

I will certainly join you for an author gathering.

We'll have to see how large my room is, but it may be able to serve as a Saturday option. Kind of makes me wish I'd sprung for the added cost to possibly get a suite if one stayed un-bought. But I've got a one-person room reserved, anyway, and so we shouldn't have to deal with lots of other folks wandering around.

Though it'd probably be better if we could get some con space, so we could have more people and, y'know, seating.

Also, if we do use my room and anyone steals my laptop, I will find you and murder you, in the sorts of slow, painful ways that make Bad Horse whinny with excitement. I use this laptop for all my statistics work, and if I lose it, graduate school is going to suddenly become very, very difficult.

That you have also read Flatland: A romance of many dimensions makes me very happy.
Anyway, the layout of the hotel is such that convention stuff will be going on on the first floor, and there is a huge atrium cafeteria thing on the floor above it. You can probably find plenty of room on the second floor. Go look at the floor layout provided at BABSCon.com.

Anyway, here's a list of who I think is coming.

Bradel
BronyWriter
DarthLink22
Penstroke
Myself
Chelis
The guy who wrote "My Little Changeling: Friendship is Weird" whose username is impossible to remember
Jake the army guy
Regidar
Horizon
Kaiden
DustyPwny
Andrew Joshua Talon
Law Abiding Pegasus
MasterWeaver (I think)
Insert Author Here (I think)
Ocalhoun
ElectreXcessive
Probably more I can't think of or I'm not following.

>follows link in post hoping for a Larry Niven reference
>is inexplicably disappointed in not finding one

In all seriousness, wish I could be there with you guys. The timing just didn't work out this year. Maybe year next, if there is a year next. So don't cause any con-breaking disasters, m'kay?

As a 20-year convention attendee, I can assure you that you don't need to worry that much about your fellow geeks, but if you want peace of mind and want to host the fanfic meet, I can volunteer my room as a secure drop point for things like your laptop you don't want around others during a semipublic gathering.

(I'd have simply said "meet up at my hotel room," but I'm sharing it with two other friends and need to be considerate of them.)

Well, I don't seriously think it's a concern. But I did consider it momentarily, because it would rather suck, and the ability to deliver an italicized threat that referenced Bad Horse was really what drove me to speak it aloud write it out.

I truely am missing all the fun! I will have to console myself with Everfree and BronyCon.

I was in the convention hotel in November for Convolution, so I know what the layout looks like. The atrium is awesome and has all SORTS of space, but the one major problem is that it's actually a restaurant, and if we try taking over their tables and chairs for random gathering space the hotel is going to get awfully cranky. Especially right at dinnertime.

(And I am definitely not planning on an author dinner meeting, because I also saw the atrium restaurant's prices in November.)

I'm starting to feel like I'm really missing out where Babscon is concerned.
Hopefully as BronyCon approaches the hype will make me feel better~

If their reaction drive is powerful enough to be interesting, they're not unarmed.
Blind spot.
General Product hulls are as ugly as they are functional. (Not to mention a bit phallic.)
Beowulf fucking Scheafer.
Crashlanders, Wunderlanders, and Jinxians OH MY.
Kilrathi are best Kzinti clones.

Ringworld or bust.

Feel better? :trollestia:

Definitely count me in for Saturday evening. I've got a room to myself as well, so that might be an option if needed as well. With luck, it might be nearby Bradle's room, and at the very least, we can purloin a couple of extra chairs and whatever if we do get stuck trying to host something in-room.

I didn't even have to click!

I aim to please. :derpytongue2:

Also, Beowulf. He is seriously one of my favorite Sci-fi characters ever.

Wish I could be there with you guys. And I'm serious about that, and it's not just for the booze, because I don't drink. Heck, I have a hard enough time being rational without drinking.

You should do a speedfic writing contest on Saturday. Go with an hour to write, and then everyone read each other's stories. Trust me, hilarity will be had.

BOOZE

"So I heard a fire alarm went off at the con yesterday?"

"Yeah, some poor shmuck invited 20 authors up to his room, and everyone tried to plug their laptops in to a single outlet with a bunch of daisy-chained power strips."

"Okay, but did they get any fanfic written?"

"Only one. Before smoke inhalation got him, the fastest typist wrote most of a story about Twilight Sparkle being replaced by a fire truck."

Nah, horizon, ur doin it wrong. See, it's not a plan. That's why it cannot possibly go wrong. Geez.

A meetup sounds interesting
