New Race of Ponies Confirmed as Canon! · 3:57am Aug 22nd, 2013
Ever since they first appeared in Luna Eclipsed, bronies have speculated on the origins of the bat ponies that pulled Luna's chariot.
Were they a new species of pony or were they just dressed up for Nightmare Night? We seem to have gotten our answer.
Lauren Faust even added her opinions!
This is pretty big. We currently have Earth ponies, pegasi, unicorns, alicorns, crystal ponies and now bat ponies.
If you enjoy reading stories with bat ponies, feel free to join the bat ponies group.
Bat ponies are one of the more overlooked races in MLP. Now that the creators and consultants for Friendship is Magic have shed some more details regarding the nature of bat ponies, bronies may take more of an interest in our favorite leathery-winged equines. I'd love to see a bat pony in season four with a name and a speaking role. If nothing else, I hope to see an increase in bat pony fanfics.
EDIT: Apparently, all of the bat ponies have a crush on Princess Luna, but then again, who doesn't?
Woo!!! Now we're going to need character tags for them!!
This is just awesome.
More stuff to play with in many, many more fics!

And here I was hoping for news of kelpies in s4
that's fucking awesome! maybe there might be a new race of unicorns as well... With curved and smooth horns?
Bat ponies> Crystal ponies
however bat ponies are less marketable to the show's intended demographic.
Sorry but I'm not a big fan of bats.
I hope you understand.
Bat ponies are sexy
There's another Bat Pony group that has more stories for you to enjoy while we wait for the inevitable flood of them.
Luna's Palace?
She has her own palace?

man, y'all way behind.
1300701 So Sombra is the only member we have seen so far of an entirely new race? I could dig it.

I choose to believe it's armour enchantment, fuck lauren faust.
So will we have more bat pony porn?
We have to know more about these bat ponies, especially the question that is probably in the back of everypony's minds.....and please don't go into the gutter with this.....how do they happen? There has to be more than just that they have bat wings and have reptilian eyes like a snake or a dragon....
Did I just mention something unwillingly and did not just realize it?
Also for the bat pony that could potentlally have a voice: Lets use this one.

That's Midnight Blossom on the left (or Angel, based on what story you're reading), and Cloud Skipper on the right (or Comet, same as above). It would be awesome that she becomes a supporting character like Celestia, Luna, and many others.
1300775 I fucking hope

I love those two characters. The stories I've seen them in are pretty amazing.

oh, you!

One of my favorite Joker scenes.
Faust has spoken!
So I wonder if this means that bat ponies could have fangs. Not sure what they could even use them for...
1300875 That's also one of my favorite Joker scenes.

This one's also good, too.
Fascinating. Technically the door was already open with the crystal ponies (and arguably even earlier with changelings), but now I'm quite curious as to what other subspecies of ponies might be hiding in Equestria and the lands beyond...
Sea ponies are the no-brainer, of course.
Flutter ponies... maybe we've already seen them. *COUGHchangelingsCOUGH*
Personally, my big hope is that we'll find out that the old kingdoms (the ones from Hearth's Warming Eve) are still a frozen wasteland under windigo control, and are still inhabited by ponies who refused to emigrate the Equestria. Except they've been twisted and mutated over countless millennia by the windigos' icy hatred, and have been transformed into horrific "frost ponies", which are essentially demi-windigos.

Since they're Luna's Royal Guards, they're probably just "formed" using her magic
Giving her own personal touch to her personal guard
(there's probably some more elaborate answer someone's come up with but this is the only one that really makes since to me, and the only thing I can be bothered to think of )
I've been wanting more Royal Guard stuff since I saw those two Solar Guards pulling Twilight's chariot on the way to Ponyville. I really really really hope Season 4 has something for me.
Season 1: First appearance of the Solar Guard, first speaking role
Season 2: First appearance of the Night Guard, dozens of Guards in a Canterlot Wedding
Season 3: First appearance of a Guard without part of their armor, another speaking role
EQG: A side character who is a Royal Guard
Season 4: ??????
The slow characterization continues
>that edit
lol damage control.
If crystal ponies count as a separate type of pony, do Saddle Arabians? What about zebras, who have cutie marks, unlike cows, donkeys, buffalo and sheep?
So Bat Ponies finally are canon, eh? This will please Batmare....

Well, I'm terribly sorry if my race isn't 'entirely new' enough for you.

I've seen one theory that bat ponies are the result of pegasus-dragon crossbreeding. Kirins of the sky, if you will.
Of course, one has to wonder how this was determined...
What about Seaponies? They were canon in the older MLP gens and were seen in that book where Twi and co went into the ocean to that seapony king Leosomething. You think that they are a subbreed of Unicorns like batponies are from pegasi and crystal ponies from earth ponies?
I always assumed they were created by Luna who wanted ponies who appreciated her night. Perhaps, so she wouldn't feel so unloved she took her closest admirers and ascended them into the first, Bat Ponies.
Either that or some dieing children that Celestia deemed were just part of the cycle that Luna gave pity upon and gave them the choice to be reborn as her children, in a way. Or 'chosen protectors' as an excuse to ignore her Sister's insistence to abide by the laws of the natural order.
This is more an alternate version of my first thoughts at the top, where instead of ever being ponies in the first place, they were always bats who were given power and form of a pony to serve her. These ponies would later go on to fight for Nightmare Moon in blind love and allegiance so not to think Luna's children would abandon their, for lack of a better word, mother.
They would later be banished or sealed to the mountains beyond Canterlot, occasionally sneaking out and some breaking code to mingle with the normal ponies, courting mates and creating Earth Pony and Unicorn off-springs. So by Luna's return, and re-instating her children and lifting Celestia's banishment upon the bat pony race, they were reintegrated by Luna's command, as with Celestia's blessing, to serve as Royal Guards to Luna and her home away from home. A Kingdom of Batponies, that for centuries awaited for their mother's return to take her rightful place as their Queen.
Would be nice if anyone could flesh those ideas out and make a story around it. Something that stays within the shows level of canon and such. Because there ARE those who DO talk that are clearly Luna's guards that are or look to be halflings. The Time episode alone can be argued for example. If the father was unicorn, the child wouldn't necessary be born with wings, but instead a horn.
Regardless of if they originate from mountain caves or not, my head canon is they have a Moon City and can survive in the vacuum of space.
On the topic of their diet, I imagine their diet consists of not just one set of things bats eat/drink, but almost all of them. As such their diet consists of large portions of fruit, usually focusing on the fruit juices as fruit bats tend to do (for some reason they prefer it to the pulp or skin) and thus having high sugar diets, so soft drink and fruit juice bottled up and delivered to them en mass make up a lot of a city living bat pony's diet. Theoretically their diet will also consist of the odd rodent or insect. On the topic of blood, they don't drink other pony's blood very often, preferring to bite at larger sleeping creatures that won't miss it, and usually only drink other pony's blood as a love bite.
...They are not vampires.
As for romance, I have a large section dedicated to a short over view of their romantic system on Tumblr... Which I shall quote:
They generally prefer high density living, either in large family units, huge cities, or both. This is on one hand a function of their rather communal behavior, as they are highly social. On the other, its also a matter that if they're not able to live among their own kind, they are more readily accepted in cities, what with the fact that most see much weirder ponies around on a regular basis.
Bat ponies when not being mis-characterized as vampiric are often construed as being seducers. However this is a misunderstanding, as it's not a matter of them being lustful, but the fact they have a splintered system of romance (described earlier), which leads them to taking multiple partners in a polygamous long term relationship, as a large amount of activities for them could be construed as romantic. So one should probably consider that their advances probably might not be immediately sexual in nature, but possibly a set up for a date.
On the topic of Magic, their abilities as whether ponies is not as thoroughly ingrained as with pegasi, and in exchange they have an inborn affinity to dark magic, though not necessarily the Sombra or Nightmare Moon kind, and certainly not as controlled. This typically manifests as either the fact the area around them is darker, or perhaps they themselves are harder to notice, however more dangerous or useful applications have been known in rare individuals.
