Equestria Girls Followup · 7:13am May 15th, 2013

People are still talking about Equestria Girls. Some say we need to panic, while others are withholding judgement until they've seen the show.

I'm in the latter camp, and will try to reserve judgement until I've seen the show. In spite of my aloof approach, I can't help but worry that Equestria Girls is trying to try to copy the 'success' of Monster High.

(Groan) Where do I even start with that clip?

Monster High is a series of monster-themed dolls which were first released by Mattel in 2010.

Its success can be partially-attributed to the popularity of the Twilight series, which made vampires and other monsters more accessible to younger girls.

Twilight paved the way for Monster High. Hasbro feels the need to compete with Mattel, so they create their own line of girl dolls: Equestria Girls. In addition to ruining vampires and werewolves, Stephanie Myer can also be indirectly blamed for the existence of Equestria Girls and the potential ruination of My Little Pony.

The Twilight series made monsters involved in love triangles appeal to young girls. It only makes sense that Mattel would try to jump on the band wagon and release their own line of monster dolls for girls.

It's funny. When I was growing up, vampires and werewolves appealed to little boys and My Little Pony appealed to girls. Now everything is switched around. Girls play with vampires and boys like My Little Pony.

Bella Swan is a narcissistic psychopath and is evidence that Stephanie Meyer doesn't know how to create compelling characters or strong role models for girls. She's like the bizarro-version of Lauren Faust.

If Equestria Girls does go the über girly route, I hope they at least do it tongue-in-cheek. A great recent example would be the Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse series. Let's watch the pilot episode, in which Barbie gets ready for her date with Ken.

I'm not going to lie, I wasn't expecting anything Barbie-related to be... funny. At least, not intentionally funny. The people working on the Barbie series have great comedic timing. In contrast, let's see how Monster High handles a similar premise of traversing an enormous closet.

(Groan) That's what you're trying to copy Hasbro? Really?

While Monster High takes itself too seriously by trying to create drama, Barbie acknowledges that the characters are toys and has fun with that premise.

Barbie and Monster High are produced by Mattel. If Hasbro is looking for something to copy, I hope they follow Barbie's example, while keeping a safe distance from Monster High.

I suggest suicide.

We can't do shit about it, anyways. It's Hasbro, the one who shut down Fighting is Magic!

They're just trying to hit the bronies in the guts. The bronies who made the show popular in the internet.

I don't really see what's the problem, how can a bad movie ruin the show? :applejackunsure:

It is tragic what has happened to the monster myth of terror and fear. Luckily we still have Alucard to fight back the evil Twilight series!

the potential ruination of My Little Pony

>implying we didn't already ruin it first

~Have a good one.

Ok, I watched all these Barbie clips, and they're kinda fucking awesome.

Eleven year old me just hung himself.

After thinking on it for a few days I came up with this.

Equestria Girls needs to be awesome for bronies to be able to wear our colors proud.
You see, even though the fandom is huge it's still not a household name. But with our ponies going to the big screen a lot more people will be curious and look us up and depending on how good the movie is they will either be "Okay cool for them" or "Dafuck is wrong with them".

Honestly the first pony movie should have been something like from the comics. Dark and Badass, but still be full of positive morals.

1081135
>Actually wanting to wear your colors proud
>Proud of enjoying a kids' TV show
Bro, all we do is enjoy a TV show and make fics and shit based around it. Bronies don't need to be a "Household name". Bronies aren't anything spectacular.

I wouldn't object to a good movie, though.

Everyone flipping their shit over EqG needs to stop. Shit-flipping shitstorms over this shit is so incredibly hipster at this point. Derpy? Okay, kinda understandable. Cadence/Armor? Again, pretty understandable that a Mary Sue and Gary Stu pop up out of nowhere. Alicorn Twilight? ... Don't get me started on you people. Now EqG? No, it's old now.

Having opinions: Great.
Being intelligent with those opinions: Better.

Within two hours we're going to have people parading around this post further talking about how bad EqG is like it's both the end of days and they've already watched it ten times or something. The ONLY two things that make sense are:

1: Shut up and wait to see it before judging it. (Creating an informed, intelligent opinion.)
2: Just don't watch it. The staff has said it will not affect MLP at all. Also, shut up.

We now return you to your regularly-scheduled BronyStories, because he usually makes more sense than the rest of you.

1081140
Sorry that wasn't the point I was trying to get across, what I meant was this.
If this movie sucks and a lot of people watch it, that might bring a lot more hate toward us.

Here's a bad example.
Let's say a brony decides he wants to bring non-brony friends to see the movie and this is their first experiences with MLP (like it would be for a lot of people.) and the movie sucked. Well chances are the friends would start making fun of our brony.

sigh...
All I'm trying to get at is that if the movie is really, really bad, there will be a lot of bad publicity on us.

1081156

If this movie sucks and a lot of people watch it, that might bring a lot more hate toward us

Good point, but again: Why should anyone care? It's not going to stop us from liking what we like.

Let's say a brony decides he wants to bring non-brony friends to see the movie and this is their first experiences with MLP (like it would be for a lot of people.) and the movie sucked. Well chances are the friends would start making fun of our brony.

Then he's a moron for bringing non-brony friends to a movie that's really aimed at pre-teen girls, and wouldn't have much appeal to anyone besides bronies who want to see what it's like, and pre-teen girls.

All I'm trying to get at is that if the movie is really, really bad, there will be a lot of bad publicity on us.

Again: Why do you care? Being a brony isn't like being gay; there's no "closet" to come out of. Say you really like... I dunno, fucking Bratz or Barbie, or something else girly. Do you need to tell people that you like them? No, that's your own fucking business, it's not something that should directly impact your life. It's like enjoying a sports team no one else around you really likes.

Those Barbie clips were funnier than I expected. Where as Monster High killed itself with stupid ass puns and trying to seem meaningful. What the hell is with those knee high boots all the Equestria girls are wearing? The style just comes off as gaudy.

People are still talking about Equestria Girls. Some say we need to panic, while others are withholding judgement until they've seen the show.

So... I can't say I'm really, really looking forward to it because I already think it's awesome? Hmmph.

You really think they are going to come out with Barbie-like dolls? Oh crap.... * Prepares rope to hang self*:moustache:

1081156
>Let's say a brony decides he wants to bring non-brony friends to see the movie he will have no friends.

That would be like a friend inviting you to watch End of Evangelion with no prior knowledge of the series. Nobody that the theoretical person is friends with is going to go see Equestria Girls in cinemas without a young relative.

That Barbie stuff... was actually surprisingly good. :twilightoops:
I'm not sure how I feel about this. :unsuresweetie:

inb4: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans Of Barbie :moustache:

What really annoys me is that this movie will likely be dubbed to norwegian before even season2 which has not even started yet. So if i want to watch this with my sister, she'll just "dafuq? Princess twilight?". I really don't want to spoil that for her.

:pinkiecrazy: This situation is getting tense... and not by alien activity, so I will play it safe and stay on overwatch.
That's XCOM baby!
:pinkiehappy: If everything fails... I will just make a dash to the skyranger.

We have a series of highly talented animators, voice actors and writers in the fandom. Why don't we make our own equestria girls. Instead of a stereotypical American high school where everyone is either a social retard or the most popular person in school, set it somewhere believable. An East London community school would be pretty interesting.

Why worry? Who knows, it might turn out great! Look at the show after all. We bronies wouldn't exist after all had we not given it a chance, let's all just sit back, relax and see it it really is shit or not before we start storming the Hasbro HQ with pitchforks, AK-74s and molotovs. Save our rage for when we see it actually is shit and stuff

1081209 Let's do this. :pinkiehappy:

1081111

Guilt by Association. In business, the views of a single executive or notable employee can damage the brand as a whole even when they speak or act as private individuals, not as representatives of the company. The actions of a notable sports star can damage the reputation and share prices of the whole team. Something bad linked to you damages you, no matter how unfair it is that the link causes damage. A burning building adjacent to your house isn't your fault - but you might get burned anyway.

It's not exactly fair, but society will draw lines and throw blame down them. There's a line between MLP and this. A very strong and official line. They may be disconnected canonically, but they're, pun not intended, stablemates.

And even if only one horse has foot and mouth the whole farm might be culled.

I have a great idea, how about don't care about Equestria girls, and don't watch it or look up anything on it?! That's what i'm doing.

I think EqD will go for the style of Monster High but be more like those barbie clips you showed us. Espically Pony Twi becoming human Twi and having to deal with no magic and weird hands is a much better and interesting way of a set-up for the start of the special (plus Ponies at the beginning, Ponies in cinema! For real! <3) than,... well, what we saw of Monster High. I had no idea that stuff was so...uhm... trying hard to be interesting? And that´s running for three years now?

1081396
I mean, for me, i don't friking care for Hasbro :applejackunsure:

1081120
Pretty much, yeah. Thanks for sharing! :yay:

1081134
Welcome to the dreamhouse, fellow brobie! :raritystarry:

Yeah, but you know if a bunch of bronies show up for the premiere the media will have a field day painting us as pedos or worse.

1081142
Thanks for the feedback. The evolution of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is comparable to Homer's sandwich.
derpicdn.net/media/W1siZiIsIjIwMTMvMDUvMTQvMjFfMzZfNTZfMTc0XzMyNTA2Nl9fVU5PUFRfX3NhZmVfZXF1ZXN0cmlhX2dpcmxzX21hY3JvLnBuZyJdXQ/325066__safe_comic_equestria-girls_macro_the-simpsons_511ade567f123be4030001ab.png

Again, I tend to be more optimistic about the future, but I can definitely see why the worrywarts feel the way they do.

1081165

Monster High killed itself with stupid ass puns and trying to seem meaningful.

I know what you mean about the puns.

"Fang my head and cry?" What the hell is that even supposed to mean? Just because two words sound similar, replacing one with the other doesn't automatically make it funny.

Monster High also has several CGI movies, including... (sigh), Scaris, City of Frights.

1081929
Being depicted as pedophiles already sets the bar pretty low. I'm not sure how much worse it could get after that.
:pinkiesick:

1081829 It's all ogre now

1081367 It has to be done

1081959
Also, "Ghoul friends", who green lighted that? And they way they look reminds me of that old Bratz toy line. All their names are also terrible puns.

Why would you post those Barbie clips though, now I feel I should watch more.

1081793

Well, really, the only relevance it'll have to you is any damage it causes to the main brand by association. It's not likely, and Hasbro don't seem to be taking a vast risk on it, but it could still make the higher ups rethink things. Worst case scenario, it doesn't do that well and some lunatic thinks "maybe we should have tied it into the show after all - then they'd have loved it!"

Well, no, the worst case scenario is probably a smallpox pandemic actually, so we'll call that one a bad case scenario instead. But certainly if this truly is bad and gets a bad critical and financial response, it could certainly see the main show affected.

1081929

Again?

1081959

...Scaris, City of Frights?

Cancel the previous, Smallpox is now a best case scenario because it may prevent anything as terrible as this ever happening again.

1081959>>1082114

Wasn't there a cartoon where they put all the Batman characters in high school. It kinda feels like that.

I main problem is that the stuff looks and feels so generic. And they made Spike a freakin' dog! A dog who doesn't even talk!

As a Spike fan that pisses me off.
Spike is the only male character in the show with any depth, the rest have been caricatures. Shining Armor has all the personality and charisma of a hotdog... a hotdog with ketchup.

Spike is what I count as our representative in the show. A dog, man. A dog!

1082114
Are you saying that damage caused to the main brand by association affects me?
i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/189/748/74708%20-%20and_not_a_single_fuck_was_given_that_day%20luna%20meme%20nightmare_night.jpg
Ok, the movie is so bad that tennage girls start to cry and go out of the theater asking for their money back.
Hasbro decides to make S4 with an story arc season long, that involves Sunset Shimmer vs Twilicorn for the most part, and ends in Twilicorn marrying "Brad" or whatever the blue haired guy is named, he still in human form by the way, yet they end having a lot of little alicorns.

the season is so bad FiM is cancelled, bronies kill every Hasbro employee, and take over teh place raping little girls and real ponies colored as the mane 6 and background characters.

Yes, fuck, that would affect me. in the other hand, if the movie isn't liked just because Twilight had a romantic interest in it, I'm goint to be even disapointed of every fan crying just because Twilight Sparkle loves Brad more than she loves them: They will never receive a flying hug from the princess of harmony, she'll never run to them with anticipation in her eyes, she'll never look up to them tenderly.

And that's why self insert fics are so downvoted, because these weren't written by them.

That's all I see people complaining about in this movie, other thing than that, seems just like a recolored High School Musical.

Alright, I'll just leave this here, guess who's the fandom, and who's Hasbro.

[youtube=7DH49WgTEOQ]

1082239

Okay, I don't think it'd be that bad, but damn, that sounds pretty bad. Though honestly I think people upset at a love interest have made their choices. And now you mention High School Musical I think they won't have a financial flop: It'll earn from the kind of tweens that watch that sort of thing, and earn from trolling Bronies going into it expressly to bitch about how terrible it is. Or to say "It's actually great!"

The truth is, it'll probably be "Meh." It promises a thousand terrible things, looks horrible... but it will turn out to be just "meh". Neither good nor horrible, just "Meh".

Paving the way for G5: Meh Little Pony.

1082403
Seriously, I sometimes feel like some guys just watch that cartoon because it's like watch soft porn. The main cast are all independent females, with a nice voice, friendly behavior, always naked and standing in four, with tatoos in their butts. and available sentimentally.

Now with this "Brad" thing, that's really showing up. the movie hasn't even watched, I still don't knowing what's the fuzz about it being bad. :applejackunsure:

1082126
I think that Batman show you mentioned was planned but never realized, and thank whatever you worship for that. And you're spot on, it looks VERY generic, and I for one think it'll BE even worse. I guess our best hope is that it doesn't affect the overall show too much, that it'll be a one time thing that bombs so hard that even mentioning it around the Hasbro offices afterwards will be punishable with that treatment they give Alex in "A Clockwork orange".

1082941

Staff's assured us it doesn't affect MLP at all. This is its own thing.

I actually had a a few comments on the various subjects, but I can't seem to be articulate today. I'll just drop them and hope for the best.

I always looked on the Monster High dolls as "Barbie for Abby Sciuto." Largely inoffensive and mostly good for being unique. I watched the animated stuff they put up on Nick and... well, I wanted to be impressed for many reasons. Monsters used in starring roles (I always tried to play monster races in D&D), some sort of world-building with monsters and humans knowing about one another, some interesting monsters in general (There's a steam-punk robot girl, not to mention cat girls that actually go a bit further than just ears and a tail) and a lot of 'Rule 34 can probably do something if they do a quick age magic wand.' And then they were painful. If you see them once you don't know the wince lines or stupid stuff is coming. Seeing them twice is strictly for eye candy. The puns are a poor fit, the world is... disjointed at best, and the writing is scattershot. Characterization is almost nil and, well, that's the good stuff to a literary fellow like myself. I was so disappointed. I was also confused: Seriously, what are Clawdeen and her family supposed to be? By tone and by the way her older brother talks I guessed she was African-Lupine-American but then she opened her gob and all I could think of was "Fuck! A werewolf bit Snooki, now we'll never get rid of her!" Also why does the yeti sound Russian? Shouldn't she sound Chinese or Nepalese?

Those Barbie clips are actually damn good. I wasn't expectin that but I'll admit when I have been surprised. The awareness felt even and properly handled. From the way you described it I was afraid that I would have to slog through another batch of PoMo Hipsterism's greatest hits and feel the talons of Insincerity rip out my soul, as it always seems to. I get that enough on this site.

In all honesty I will probably watch Equestria Girls in theaters. Given the Brony saturation in my area it'll be a great way to network. I already buy other products to demonstrate that I support the endeavors. I also hold out hope for season four. No matter what, I still have all that I have created and all that others have created and that is truly worthwhile.

1082239 The problem for me with the romantic subplot is that Faust expressly didn't want the Mane Cast to have love interests for exactly this reason. The parts about humanization seem interesting while the high school parts...seem like high school parts in every other girls-going-through-puberty show. My second problem with "Brad" is that we have all of like forty five minutes to develop his character with everything else that's going on in the movie, and that's not enough time to develop a good romance. Even great movies with great characters like Princess And The Frog ran into that problem when developing romantic subplots or superplots. She has way better chemistry with Celestia anyway.

1086184

Faust expressly didn't want the Mane Cast to have love interests for exactly this reason

What reason? i missed something here.

Also, sorry for drop this to you sony, but this isn't Faust's show. You can decide which part you like, or which you don't, but you can't say "That's not canon." Or "The story is just a bad fanfic."

Also, all romance in movies suck, screw the frogs movie, You could have mention snowhite or every Disney movie, no, animated movie, better yet all the imdb catalog. Equestria girls is aimed to teens, Twilight Sparkle boyfriends doesn't need to be the better character developed ever, neither is this a romantic movie anyways.
25.media.tumblr.com/5240050ca23b870bb6b7585e8935f0fa/tumblr_mmqv12XiIr1r3enmgo1_1280.png
So huggie, huggie, are you jelly?
I don't know why people doens't get that disgusted when shipping Twilight with Trixie after share 15 minutes of hate in the first episode, or with Dash for some reason that doesn't seems to make sense to me. Even Sunset Shimmer seems to have more approval for shippings than Brad. :duck:
