So, I am in a position where I am in need of some cash to buy something important: an engagement ring for my girlfriend. It's not a cheap thing, so I need all of the revenue that I can get. So, I'm just going to ask you if you are open to this idea. If not, I will apologize and never speak of it again.
How would you guys feel if I started taking commissions for merchandise based on my stories? What would you think if I started making T-shirts that say "with all of the quiet dignity and grace that I can muster, I walked up to Celestia and punched her in the face"? Would you be open to stuff like that? if yes, what what would you enjoy seeing? How about story commissions? Basically, I need cash to propose marriage to my girlfriend and I was hoping for your support. I must stress that I'm not some sellout who looks at you guys with dollar signs in his eyes, I'm just curious.
If that is not something that interest you in the slightest, please tell me and I will never speak of it again. I just wanted to get your opinion, that's all. If you cannot spare a single cent, there are absolutely no hard feelings, particularly since I realize that life can be tough.

Hiya! I am a big fan of your stories, specifically the Secret Life of Rarity and the stories that follow it. You need some ideas? try these:
different t-shirt designs featuring different characters from your stories: Blossom, Sweetie Belle, the filly version and the grown, Rarity, and the others.
bake something and design it like your characters colors and in the shape of their cutie marks.
STORY TIME! call around and talk to your fellow bronies and pegasisters that live nearby and ask if they'd like a LIVE READING of your stories. Be sure to charge them, not enough to make them angry, but enough so that they will come, and read them some of your work.

I would buy a coffee mug or shirt, I'd also donate a little. I've done so in the past when author's of stories or deviant artists I like have fund-raised for different things. Aurora Dawn comes to mind who made Rainbow Factory, re-paying an author for months spent writing to bring us free entertainment seems only fair.
I probably wouldn't buy any of it, as I haven't got a cent at the moment and won't for a while yet, but I won't think any less of you if you decide to ask us for money. Take that as you will.

I'd warm up to the idea of story commissions, but I think you'll be held back on your own stories unless you do it selectively.

I'd buy a TD punching Celestia shirt if it not only had what your wrote on the front, but a picture of Celestia being socked in the jaw to go along with it (and maybe a picture of the Mane 6 pouncing TD and beating the crap out of him on the back, but this last part isn't necessary).
