The Order-naries have begun to settle into their new lives in Equestria. Ash is experimenting with methods of adapting to Equestria's form of magic with Gale's help while Soul Mage and Gold Heart are looking for a constructive way to use their talents. The Order-naries are four mercenaries of Order with the bad luck to be caught up in an inter-dimensional race against a demon named Tau'rin to find seven Gems of chaotic magical power. Twilight, Pinkie, AJ, and Rarity no longer remember anything about the Secret of the Pegasi, but there's one thing Rainbow and Fluttershy overlooked: how did the letter that Twilight wrote about the Secret get to Celestia?

When Twilight comes stumbling back home with a hangover and no memory of the previous day, Spike discovers that he's suddenly alone in knowing about the mystery of removable wings. An off-handed comment by the worn-out unicorn prompts Spike into an investigation that will shed more light on the truth behind the conspiracy and raise even more questions.

A fantastic air show by Rainbow Dash is spoiled by a violent confrontation with a flock of ducks, resulting in Rainbow breaking a wing. Fluttershy is the first pony to find the wounded pegasus, who makes a request that Fluttershy is not comfortable about fulfilling.

Twilight has discovered a strange old book purportedly written by Star Swirl the Bearded, and Rainbow Dash discovers a latent spell in it that transports the two ponies to a strange island in the middle of nowhere. With no viable options available to them, Twilight and Rainbow begin to search the island for clues to a way home and the reason behind the odd puzzles and contraptions presented to them.
