My Little Brony: This is a Fanfic

This is a Chapter.

In the mystical land of Florida, there lived an ordinary brony named Gary. He was a regular guy, with a regular job(just kidding, he didn't work), and a regular life, but he had one not-so-regular obsession: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. There was a certain type of fictional nerd invented by other nerds when they needed to feel better about what they chose to dedicate their lives to, and those fictional nerds would think Gary needed to touch grass. And so he spent most of his free time watching episodes, collecting merchandise, and participating in online discussions about the show. And by online discussions, I meant harassing people with any opinion that differed from his own.

One fateful day, as Gary was browsing through an MLP fanfic about a generic blank-slate self-insert getting all he ever wanted out of the MLPFIM setting and characters, he stumbled upon a mysterious thread in a MLP group forum entitled "The Ultimate Pony Adventure: Live Your Dreams!". Intrigued, he clicked on it and found a post that claimed to have the secret to granting the ultimate wish of any true MLP fan. It promised the chance to become a part of the world of Equestria and live out the ultimate self-insert power fantasy. Without a second thought, Gary clicked upon the link provided in the post and filled his computer with so many terrabytes of viruses and morally objectionable legally dubious audiovisual content that his overpriced gamer laptop exploded in a fireball of extreme violence. Un.

But this was not known to Gary. Not much was known to Gary.

As he clicked the link, Gary felt a strangely warm sensation wash over him. Suddenly, he was no longer sitting in his dimly lit basement, surrounded by pony posters and plushies. Instead, he found himself standing in the middle of a picturesque meadow in Equestria. The sun was shining, birds were chirping, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers.

Gary looked down at himself in disbelief. He was no longer a middle-aged four hundred pound man spilling out of his Pinkie Pie pajamas; he had transformed into a tall, muscular, and impossibly handsome human with sparkling blue eyes and perfectly styled blue hair. He couldn't help but grin, realizing that he had become the ultimate self-insert power fantasy, some generic anime character whose name he had forgotten years ago.

But that wasn't all. As Gary looked around, he noticed that he was not alone. A group of six colorful ponies, each representing one of the Elements of Harmony, was approaching him. They looked exactly like the main characters from the show: Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, and Fluttershy.

"Hey there, handsome," said Rainbow Dash, fluttering her rainbow-colored wings and batting her eyelashes at him, because that was totally what Rainbow Dash sounded and acted like. "We've been waiting for you."

Gary's heart skipped a beat. This was it! His ultimate dream come true. He was about to embark on an epic adventure with his favorite ponies, and they all seemed to be head over hooves in love with him. Ha ha, I said hooves.

"Uh, hi," Gary stammered, trying to play it cool and failing miserably. A spaghetti geyser erupted from every other male's pants across the multiverse in sympathy, curing world hunger and feeding every starving African child. "I'm Gary, your biggest fan! I have spent more time looking at you than I've spent looking at anyone alive! I've never had a girlfriend before, but if you'd all be my boyfriend-free girls, I promise to do all I can to make you happy, as long as it involves cuddling and headpats and other totally family friendly means of expressing love."

The ponies giggled and surrounded him, their eyes filled with adoration, because they had never had fans before apparently, and had always wanted to share a single man who acted like a crazed fanboy towards them all. Twilight Sparkle stepped forward, her horn glowing with magical energy for some reason. This never comes up again.

"Welcome to Equestria, Gary," she said. "We've been told that you have a special destiny here. You are the Chosen One, destined to save our world from an ancient evil that threatens to destroy everything we hold dear. Because you're just so absolutely wonderfully perfect and excellent at getting everything you've ever wanted out of us and our world that you would have literally nothing at all to do in your own story if you didn't bring an ancient evil monster of some sort with you only you can fight."

Gary couldn't believe his luck. Not only was he the ultimate self-insert power fantasy, but he was also the Chosen One, making him inherently better than everyone else. It was almost too good to be true. He vaguely recalled something a youtuber said about Chosen Ones, something about them being inherently boring characters gifted perfection and asked only to use it for the greater good, and utterly inferior to characters who are not chosen ones but instead choose to be the one from a writing perspective. But he was special and that guy wasn't, making him inherently superior to that guy, making that guy wrong by default.

The ponies led Gary to their home, a magnificent castle that was even grander than Canterlot, because Twilight's gaudy crystal castle had only grown larger when nopony was looking. Inside, he was given a tour of his luxurious new living quarters. He had his own wing of the castle, complete with a bedroom that had a king-sized bed covered in plush pony-themed sheets and a wall lined with framed pictures of himself and the Mane Six. There was a room like a Town Hall except it contained every mare alive ever who wanted to join his harem, which was most of them, even all of the Mane Six's moms including Applejack's mother who didn't die in this AU. Big Mac was also a cute mare in this AU because Gary's desperation for mares was powerful enough to warp reality around him, and if he ever fought Discord or Bill Cypher, Gary would win in a very generic and boring way because his stronger reality warping would force his desired boring cliches to become immutable laws of hyperreality and exclusively work to his benefit. The bathroom was stocked with every type of pony-themed toiletry imaginable, even limited edition Rainbow Dash toilet paper that was blue with rainbow streaks on the edges, and the closet was filled with an endless array of stylish outfits that perfectly fit his new, impossibly handsome physique, full of Vtuber-style pointless details including what looked to be a fidget spinner on a diagonal belt across his chest.

"I made those, darling!" Rarity told him. "I make clothes, darling! That's my character trait, darling!"

"Wait are we doing a Breaking Buck reference?" Pinkie Pie asked. "I thought we were doing that episode from Futurama with the bees and-"

"Sssshhhh!" Twilight shushed sussily, and she spelled it with four s's and four h's because I forgot how many of those are supposed to be in that word.

But Gary didn't care. Noticing hidden details? He never learned how to do that. That was what video essayists on youtube were for.

As the days passed, Gary settled into his new life in Equestria. He spent his mornings training in magic and magical kung fu with the Mane Six, learning to harness the power of the Elements of Harmony, because he also had to do that. In the afternoons, he would go on adventures with his new pony friends, thwarting the plans of various villains and saving Equestria from certain doom with the power of friendship lasers he got better at firing each day. Before long he was invincibly laser blasting foes before even giving them a chance to prattle about their reasons and evil plan and motivations. He even started to blast random ponies with the Elements of Harmony just in case, knowing those lasers only did whatever the plot demanded when it was necessary, and would never hurt good ponies. Unless it was to seal Luna for a thousand years. Poor Luna. Man, I'm still not fully over that. She deserved better, man.

But it wasn't just the thrill of adventure that kept Gary in Equestria. It was the attention and adoration of the Mane Six that truly made it every last one of his favourite self-insert power fantasies come to life. They doted on him constantly, each one vying for his attention and affection.

Twilight Sparkle was his intellectual equal but also intellectually inferior to his newfound genius, and they spent hours discussing the magic of Equestria and solving complex math problems together or whatever it is nerds do for fun. Applejack was always there to lend a strong, capable hoof and cook him delicious country meals. Pinkie Pie threw him extravagant parties every night, and Rainbow Dash challenged him to daring feats of athleticism that always ended in a... Well, I probably shouldn't say the quiet part out loud, but there was a reason he was attracted to these characters, and it wasn't really their personalities.

Rarity showered him with gifts and insisted on designing custom outfits for him to wear, each more fabulous than the last, and kept begging Twilight for more money whenever she ran out of it showering him with gifts. And Fluttershy, with her gentle shy adorable nature, was also there.

But the true icing on the cake was the romantic tension that simmered beneath the surface. Each of the ponies harbored a secret crush on Gary, and they made no effort to hide their jealousy when he spent time with one of the others, because of course, that's how they'd act. Gary was in pony heaven, living out his ultimate harem wish fulfillment fantasy.

One evening, as Gary lounged by the castle's new luxurious indoor pool (bulldozing the town school to have it built was totally worth it! And nopony could get mad at him because he said sorry afterwards and was forgiven and therefore just as redeemed as Starlight Glimmer. Also Ponyville was a non euclidean place where geometry was a suggestion and consistency was a joke), he couldn't help but revel in his incredible luck. He had it all: adventure, adoration, and a bevy of beautiful ponies who couldn't resist his charms. He was the ultimate self-insert power fantasy, and he knew it.

But just as Gary was about to dive into the pool, a dark cloud appeared on the horizon, casting a shadow over Equestria. It was the ancient evil that Twilight Sparkle had warned him about, and it had finally arrived.

Twilight looked at the cloud.

Twilight looked at Gary.

Twilight looked at the cloud.

Twilight looked at Gary.

Twilight looked at the cloud.

"Finally! I thought I was going to go mad without a real challenge!" Twilight yelled.

Gary said nothing.

Twilight looked at Gary. "Gary, that's your line. Say something cool already!"

Gary looked at the cloud.

Twilight looked at the cloud.

Twilight looked at Gary.

Pinkie Pie was there.

Twilight looked at the cloud.

Gary pointed a finger at the cloud. "You don't scare me at all!"

"Nailed it," Rainbow Dash snarked, rolling her eyes, before getting back into character, or in this case, back out of character, which was in character with her character established in this book.

Now, like any great author, I feel it is time for an awkward detour into something completely different. You could almost say, "and now for something completely different", or perhaps, "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition", or maybe even the time-honoured classic meme line of "I'll be back". In the realm of literary exploration, we often find ourselves navigating the intricate maze of character dynamics. Characters, you see, are not merely individuals existing within the confines of a story; they are the very essence of the narrative itself, the lifeblood coursing through the veins of plot and theme, creating a delicate balance of in character and out of character moments that dance like fireflies on a moonlit night.

Now, let's take a moment to reflect on the profound significance of characters in any given narrative, for without characters, there would be no narrative to speak of. In character, they weave the tapestry of the story, breathing life into the words on the page, making us laugh, cry, and ponder the intricacies of the human condition. But what about out of character moments? Ah, yes, those elusive and enigmatic instances when characters deviate from their established personas, like a ship straying from its plotted course into uncharted waters.

In character development, we often find that the most compelling tales emerge from the interplay between the expected and the unexpected. Characters are not static beings; they are organic entities that evolve, adapt, and occasionally throw us curveballs that leave us in awe. It is precisely these out of character moments that keep us glued to the pages, on the edge of our seats, and eager to see what twists and turns lie ahead.

Consider, if you will, the classic hero's journey, a narrative archetype that has stood the test of time. In character, our hero embarks on a quest, faces trials and tribulations, and ultimately emerges transformed, having conquered their inner demons. But it is the occasional out of character choices, those moments when the hero defies our expectations, that add depth and complexity to the story. These deviations from the expected path are like splashes of vivid color on an otherwise monochromatic canvas, creating a vibrant and dynamic narrative that resonates with readers.

And let us not forget the role of the antagonist, that shadowy figure who exists in counterpoint to the protagonist. In character, the antagonist embodies opposition and conflict, pushing the hero to their limits. Yet, it is in those out of character moments when we catch a glimpse of the humanity lurking beneath the villainous facade, a glimmer of vulnerability or doubt that makes us question the boundaries of good and evil.

But wait, you might be thinking, what about secondary characters? Do they not also play a vital role in the grand tapestry of storytelling? Indeed, they do. Secondary characters, too, must navigate the treacherous waters of in character and out of character behavior. They serve as foils, allies, and sometimes even unexpected catalysts for change, adding layers of complexity to the narrative.

In the end, the dance of character dynamics is a delicate and ever-shifting one. It is a waltz of contradictions, a symphony of in character and out of character moments that keeps us engaged, enthralled, and eagerly turning the pages. For it is within these contradictions that the true magic of storytelling resides, where characters cease to be mere words on a page and instead become living, breathing beings with the power to captivate our hearts and minds. So, let us revel in the beauty of character complexity, for it is a journey worth taking, a journey that leads us deeper into the heart of the story, where the unexpected and the expected coexist in harmonious discord. Speaking of Discord, he doesn't show up in this story.

The Mane Six gathered around Gary, their expressions filled with worry, because there was a big evil cloud over Ponyville that looked just like that one from The Subspace Emissary but eviller.

"It's time, Gary," Twilight Sparkle said. "You must harness the power of the Elements of Harmony and defeat this evil once and for all. Because for some reason you're better at that than us, and also we're firing Element Of Harmony laser beams again for some reason."

Gary nodded, a determined look in his sparkling blue eyes. He knew that this was his moment to shine, his chance to prove himself as the Chosen One and solidify his status as the ultimate self-insert power fantasy in the greatest story of all time written by the most attractive and smart author of all time.

With the Elements of Harmony at his disposal, Gary faced off against the ancient evil, a towering, monstrous creature of pure darkness that threatened to engulf Equestria in darkness. It looked like a massively meaty muscular man from the waist up, except it also looked like purple clouds and it was the size of a mountain and a gigantic red eye was at the center of its disproportionately tiny head mounted atop enormous manly pecs.

"I AM NIHILOSS."

His booming voice shook the very air, and not just because that was what sound did.

Gary opened his mouth to speak.

No sound came out.

"YOU ARE GOING TO DIE, AND PONYVILLE IS GOING TO DIE, AND THEN EQUESTRIA IS GOING TO DIE. I AM A CYNICAL NIHILIST AND I WISHED UPON A DYING STAR FOR INFINITE POWER BECAUSE, CLEARLY, THE INFINITE MULTIVERSE IS SO AWFUL AND UNFAIR THAT THE ONLY WAY TO STOP BAD THINGS FROM HAPPENING IS TO STOP ANYTHING FROM HAPPENING AGAIN EVER BY OBLITERATING EVERYTHING. I AM THE END OF DAYS. I AM THE FALL OF EMPIRES. I AM THE END OF SENTENCES AND THE LAST WORD IN SILENT FINALITY."

The cloud of darkness loomed over the world and spread.

Gary was terrified.

His own heart pounded in his ears.

And a strange beeping.

It reminded him of that time he visited someone's house and the fire alarm needed batteries.

But it faded quickly.

And he was left confused.

Lost.

He couldn't believe in himself.

But he could believe in ponies who believed in him.

The Mane Six were about to take turns each yelling a sappy emotional power of friendship speech about never giving up.

And then they did.

The Mane Six, along with Spike, gathered around Gary, the scared and trembling human who had unexpectedly found himself in the magical world of Equestria. Twilight Sparkle, the princess of friendship, stepped forward, her lavender coat shimmering in the gentle glow of her horn. Her friends, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Rarity, and Fluttershy, stood beside her, their expressions resolute.

Twilight's voice echoed with determination as she yelled, "Gary! We know you're scared, but you have a destiny to fulfill, a darkness to conquer. You're the Chosen One, and it's time to embrace your inner strength!"

Rainbow Dash, her multicolored mane trailing behind her, added with fiery passion, "Yeah! You might be from another world, but you've got the heart of a hero, and heroes don't back down!"

Pinkie Pie, bouncing energetically, chimed in, "Woo-hoo! We've seen you face tough challenges, Gary! Remember when you tackled that huge pizza all by yourself? This is just like that, but with extra cheese and magic!"

Applejack, the down-to-earth farmer, spoke earnestly, "Darlin', we've all been through our share of scrapes, but we face 'em together. You ain't alone in this fight."

Rarity, her unicorn horn glowing softly, added a touch of elegance to the moment. "Gary, darling, you possess a unique strength within you. Your determination and courage can shine brighter than any diamond."

"Your next line is... Was this all part of your plan, Jojo?"

"WAS THIS ALL PART OF YOUR PLAN, JOJO? ...NANI?"

He exploded.

And then he exploded twice.

And then explosions erupted all around him, reacting in a disconnected chain from sheer volatile awesomeness overexposure.

In an instant, Gary's victory was swift and decisive. The ancient evil was vanquished, and Equestria was saved.

"Well, that was easy," He smirked smugly.

Equestria was saved, thanks to the bravery and courage of Gary, the Chosen One. Twilight Sparkle and the other ponies rushed to his side, their faces filled with gratitude and admiration.
