Chapter 2: A Country Gal's Dreams

After heading to Professor Luna and Celestia's lab the day prior, Sky was ready to start his Pokémon journey. After spending nearly a day in the backwoods of the professors' lab, the young boy found a worthy partner in Turtwig. Now the pair are getting ready to head out on their crusade. And it seems they were getting an early start.

The peak of dawn was barely shown as the sun had yet to awake. But that didn't stop a certain duo as Sky and his partner, Turtwig, were in front of the house. After getting his Pokémon, Sky made it back home, informing his grandma of how it went. The pair then decided to officially start their morning journey as it would allow Sky to properly pack and restock his supplies. However, it seems the boy was impatient about starting his adventure and had to get it out of his system. And the best way he could think of was to do some practice with his Pokémon.

The boy was now in front of a tree with Turtwig as the pair practiced the small creature's moves. He made a small obstacle course for both him and Turtwig to train as they did several attempts to increase their speed and stamina. The Pokédex that Luna gave Sky had a scanner feature that could inform the trainer of what moves the Pokémon knew. Seeing the attacks that Turtwig could do, Sky grinned like a little kid on Christmas.

"Now, Turtwig, Razor Leaf!" shouted Sky as he pointed at the tree.

"Twig!" shouted Turtwig as he flicked his head, making his stem shoot out several leaves in a row as they collided with the hard bark.

"Now, use Tackle!" shouted the boy.

Turtwig then changed to the offensive as the small creature zoomed ahead. What it lacked in size, it made up well in terms of speed. The small Pokémon was charging ahead at quick speeds that collided with the bark.

"Keep it up, bud. Tackle again!" instructed Sky as Turtwig kept using the move to increase its power and speed.

"Now try doing a revolving jump!" instructed Sky as Turtwig leaped into the air and then began to spin on the ground as he avoided the small poles.

The pair kept until the sun's first peak was shown beyond the horizon. The pair were both sweating as Turtwig had some bruises shown all over his body.

"Good job, Turtwig."

"Twig," replied the Pokémon with a smile.

"Alright, time to rest up," said Sky as he pulled out his Pokéball. He was about to call back his partner when Turtwig started to glow.

The small greenish Pokémon was glowing in bright light as the sun rose beyond the horizon. As the morning star started to rise, the glow on Turtwig became brighter and brighter until it stopped. The most noticeable thing was that the battle scuffs all over Turtwig were now gone as the surprised Sky.

"What was that?" asked the boy. He then pulled out his Pokédex as Nicole brought up the move Turtwig used on itself.

"Synthesis. Allows the Pokémon to restore some health. Huh, cool little trick, bud." said Sky to Turtwig as he got a response. "Alright, Turtwig, return!"

The Pokéball then sucked the Pokémon back. Sky's grandma watched from the kitchen window as the woman saw her grandson training.

"He's so much like his father," said the elderly woman as she could see how Sky was like her son when he started his journey.

After taking care of the sweat and changing clothes, Sky was in his room as he was packing the last bit of the things he would be taking with him once he started his journey. The boy let out his partner as the tiny Pokémon looked around its owner's room.

"Twig?" said the greenish creature as he pointed one of its stubby legs at a photo frame on Sky's nightstand.

"Yeah, that's my folks. They're currently away handling some business. So for the past 2 years, I've been staying with my grandma till I'm ready to start my journey." said Sky as he dug through his closet.

The teen was tossing out pieces of garments as they all landed on Turtwig. Once the boy found what he was looking for, he turned around and blinked at what he saw. Turtwig had many clothes piled on it as a pair of boxers was on his twig.

"Twig!" said the creature while lifting the boxer to see with one of its legs.

Sky helped his partner to get rid of all the stuff on him. The small greenish creature then jumped onto the boy's bed and got closer to the nightstand. There were more photos as well as other things that the Pokémon noticed. The boy sat down as he reached over to one of the frames.

"This is one of the first photos taken of us as a family. I was just two months born," said Sky as he showed the picture to his partner. "They told me I could go on my Pokémon journey when I was ready. Meet tons of new Pokémon and folks. Honestly, it's something I've been looking forward to since I first saw my mom and dad battle."

"Twig?"

"And now that I have you, my journey is about to start," Sky said as he patted Turtwig's head, which the small greenish Pokémon enjoyed.

"Come on, let's get something to eat before we head back to the lab to get the rest of the things I need," stated the teen.

Based on some of the recipes he remembered from his mother, Sky was able to make some food for both Turtwig and Sylveon as the pair enjoyed it.

"So, do you have everything ready?"

"Just about, grandma. All I need to do is head back to the lab for some final instructions from Professor Luna."

"Then you're well on your way to starting your journey. Just like your mother and father," smiled Sky's grandma. "By the way, there's something I've been meaning to give you."

Sky raised an eyebrow as he saw his grandma get up from the table. She approached the living room and pulled out a small box within a hidden drawer. The elderly woman returned to the kitchen as she presented the object to her grandson. The teen took the object and lifted the lid as inside was a necklace.

"It was your father's. When they dropped you off with me, they told me to give this to you when you begin your journey. Your mother gave it to him when she finally confessed her feelings to him as they traveled. They wanted you to know they'll be with you in spirit when you're on your adventure."

"Thanks, grandma," said Sky as he put the necklace on. For the boy, he could sense his parents with him when he looked at the necklace.

"I'm proud to know that you're following in their footsteps. Make sure that you give it your all. And no matter what happens, you never give up. Even when the odds might not be in your favor, keep fighting." said Sky's grandma.

"I will," responded Sky with a determined look. "Turtwig, you finished?"

"Twig!"

"Then let's go," said Sky as he got up from the table and grabbed his backpack. "Thanks for everything, grandma."

"Don't mention it," said the old woman as she hugged her grandson tightly. "I love you."

"I love you too. I promise to call every now and then to let you know how I'm doing," said Sky.

"I appreciate that. Also, once you get the last things from Luna's lab, you might drop off this package for me. Seeing as how you're heading out on your adventure, I'd figured you could do this small favor for me."

"Anything for you, grandma," said Sky as he took the package and placed it in his backpack. "Turtwig, let's go!"

"Twig!"

The boy and Pokémon exited the house as Sky's grandma, and Sylveon watched the duo head down the path. They waved goodbye until they disappeared from sight; both excited to see how far the pair would go in their adventure.

As she finished collecting her latest samples, Luna was doing her routine checkup for the Pokémon in the backwoods. The woman then returned to the lab; waiting for her was Sky.

"Ah, you're here. I trust you're ready," said Luna.

"Of course," replied the boy.

"Lulu, is he here?" called out a voice.

From above, another woman was stepping through the doors. Like her younger sister, she wore a lab coat, hair that was rainbow color-ish, a green undershirt with matching heels, and a miniskirt. Sky noticed and could tell she was the oldest of the siblings based on how much taller she was than Luna.

"I take it you're Sky?" asked the woman.

"Yup, and I assume you're Luna's older sister."

"Yes, Professor Celestia. Sorry for not being here yesterday. I had some things that required my attention."

"That's alright. Luna was able to give me most of my stuff. And I even picked out a partner." said Sky as he gestured to Turtwig, who was by his feet.

"Yes, an unusual one. We don't spot many Turtwigs in the backwoods. It must have been fate that brought you two together on this journey. Regardless, you're here to get the last bit of info before you start. Follow me." gestured Celestia.

The older sister led Sky to the computer as she asked him for his Pokédex. The boy gave it to her as she took it and slotted it into the computer. The woman began to type some commands, and after a few moments, she took it back out.

"There you go. I've registered you for the Equestrian League. Now all you have to do is gain eight badges to qualify. I've also included a map on your Pokédex, allowing you to see where you are at all times." said Celestia.

"Also, you're gonna need these," said Luna as she had five Pokéballs in one hand and a small case in the other. "If you're gonna be on your journey, you'll need a way to catch other Pokémon. And this is where you'll keep your badges when you win your Gym Battles."

"Thanks," said Sky as he took the items from Luna.

"Remember, only six you can carry up to at a time. Any more, and they'll automatically be transferred here. And if you ever need to make a trade to your lineup, feel to contact us." said Celestia.

"I hear ya. Well, I guess this is it. Time for me to start my journey. Ready, Turtwig?" asked Sky.

"Twig," responded the small creature.

Sky pulled out his Pokéball as he recalled back his partner. He put the ball in his pocket as he was about to step out.

"Oh, before I forget. Do any of you know where I can find Sweet Apple Acres? I promised my grandma I drop off a package for her." asked Sky to both ladies.

"You're in luck. It's just beyond the road from here. Not too far. In fact, before you would have hit the town, you would've come across a huge farm. Just keep following the path, and you'll see it in no time." said Celestia.

"Thanks."

"Good luck, Sky. We hope for the best on your journey," said Luna.

"I will," nodded Sky.

The boy stepped through the door and began walking along the path. The two sisters watched from the window as they saw the teen disappear. The road ahead was long, but Sky pressed on. He had to path through some grasslands as he saw a few more Pokémon roaming. While he wanted to catch some, his first priority was to deliver the package that his grandma had asked of him. He was walking when the ground suddenly began to shake.

"What the hell? Is that an earthquake?!!" shouted Sky as he held onto a fence on the side of the road.

The teen looked as he saw what was making the rumbling. The fence he was holding onto was part of a larger field. On the inside, there was s dust cloud being kicked up as emerging from it were two herds of Pokémon. The first ones looked to be dairy cows; they were pink in color with a black hood and a plump, cream-colored belly/udder with four pink teats. The other group was much bigger and resembled that of a bull. They were a tan color, with a brown mane that covered part of his stout body, a slightly chubby belly, somewhat fat haunches, and a hump on his back. It had blue hooves and horns, as well as three long tails. They had three blue circles on their head, from their forehead to their eyes.

"Miltank, the Milk Cow Pokémon. The milk that Miltank produces is calorie-dense and highly nutritious. Although it's best known for this milk, it can also hold its own in battle thanks to its strength and toughness."

Sky then aimed his Pokédex at the other group that was charging.

"Tauros, the Wild Bull Pokémon. Although Tauros in other regions are known for their fierce love of battle, they are calm enough that many people can ride them without fear."

"Yee-haw!" shouted a voice.

Sky heard the shout as he turned his attention back to the huge dust cloud. Riding beside the group were two other Pokémon as someone was on the back of one of them. The smaller of the two Pokémon resembled that of a canine. Most of its body was brown, and some parts were dark blue. It has very large ears and what looks like a mustache and forehead hair in the shape of a "W." It has small neat paws and a blue cover over its body and tail.

"Herdier, the Loyal Dog Pokémon. Herdier's fur is so dense that it forms a hard, protective layer and always grows. Keeping the fur groomed can be challenging, but many trainers find it worthwhile because Herdier is such a loyal partner." explained Nicole.

The other Pokémon presented was a cream-colored equine Pokémon with red eyes and a long horn atop its head, similar to a unicorn. Its mane and tail were comprised of red and yellow flames, while smaller embers trailed from its fetlocks.

"Rapidash, the Fire Horse Pokémon. Most of the time, Rapidash travels at a casual center across the flat lands where it lives. When it breaks into a gallop, its mane blazes brightly."

"Get along, little doggies!" shouted the person on Rapidash's back.

"Herd!"

"Not you, Herdier," said the human to the dog as they returned their attention to the large group of Pokémon.

Sky saw the human on the back of Rapidash. It was a girl with moderate sap green and hair that was pale, light grayish olive hair. She wore brilliant gamboge shorts and vest, a short white shirt underneath, brown cowboy boots, and a stetson hat on top of her head. They managed to get the entire herd into the nearby barn. Sky had gotten up from all the shaking and began his way toward the place.

He arrived at the front entrance as there was a huge sign above it that read: "Welcome to Sweet Apple Acres." The boy stepped through the gate and began heading towards the house. Along the way, he took in all the many vegetables that were ready to be picked as in the distance, there was a massive orchard filled with some of the most delicious apples the teen had ever since. He noticed a few Tauros in the nearby prairie as they were grazing after the exercise they had just done.

The boy's attention was soon caught as he heard some sounds. The noises came from a girl who was way smaller and younger than him. What stood out for the tiny girl was the cute little pink bow she wore on her head. The girl was trying to pull something, a cart full of hay.

"Come on. Just... need... to... pull!" said the small girl as she struggled. She lost her footing and fell onto her rump as she felt it. "Ow." said the girl as she began to rub her behind.

"You okay?" said Sky as he towered over the fallen girl.

The girl looked up and saw the older boy as he was extending his hand. She accepted it as Sky pulled her up to her feet with ease.

"Thanks."

"No problem. So, need a hand?" asked the teen.

"I guess. I just need to push the cart into the barn. But it's a bit heavy; it seems I loaded too much." chuckled the girl sheepishly.

"Well, let me handle it," said Sky as he stepped behind the cart and began to push.

The boy dug his feet into the ground as he began to apply some pressure. The wheels on the cart slowly moved along the dirt as soon Sky managed to make it move.

"Thanks for the help, Mister."

"Don't... mention it. But you don't have to address me like that. My name is Sky," grunted the boy as he pushed. "What's yours?"

"I'm Applebloom," said the girl.

"Nice to meet you, Applebloom."

"So, what are you doing here?" asked the girl.

"Well, I'm actually a Pokémon trainer. I just started my journey today."

"Wow! I can't wait until I'm old enough to go on my own," said Applebloom.

The pair approached the barn doors as Applebloom opened them up for Sky to push the cart in. The girl told the teen where to dump the bales of hay as he tipped it over.

"Thanks for your help, Sky."

"Don't mention it, Applebloom. Happy I could be of assistance," said the teen as he wiped his forehead. "By the way, I'm also here cause I have to deliver a package. Know anybody by the name of Granny Smith?"

"Yeah, that's my grandma. She should be in the house. I'll take you to her." said Applebloom as she began to lead Sky out of the barn and toward their house.

"Granny?!!" shouted the girl as she walked into the living room.

"She's not here, Applebloom!" called out a voice.

Stepping out from the kitchen was the girl that Sky saw earlier.

"If you're looking for Granny, she went to town to pick up supplies. Said she be back soon," replied the older cowgirl.

"Aww. Cause I have somebody here who needs to give her something," stated Applebloom as she gestured to Sky, who appeared behind her.

"Hold on a minute... You're that girl I saw earlier," said Sky as he saw the girl that Applebloom was talking to.

"Huh?" replied the girl with a raised eyebrow.

"You know my big sis, Applejack?" asked Applebloom.

"Sister?" responded Sky as his initial reaction. "Oh, no. It's just that I saw her rounding up some Miltanks and Tauros earlier when I was making my way here."

"So you saw me herdin' the cattle?" said Applejack with a smile.

"Yeah, honestly, it was amazin' how you were able to do that."

"Heh, you're gonna make me blush, sugarcube," said Aj while tipping her hat. "By the way, Applebloom, did you put the hay in the barn for the Miltank?"

"Sure did. I had some help from Sky here," said the small girl.

"That so? Well, go fetch Big Mac. Lunch is about ready." said the older sister to her younger sibling as Applebloom exited the house and began to search for their eldest sibling.

"Hey, I appreciate you helpin' mah sister. Not many folks are willin' to lend a hand without thinkin' twice," Applejack said to Sky.

"No trouble at all, Applejack."

"Aj is fine. So, you just startin' yer journey?" asked the country gal.

"Y-yeah. How can you tell?" asked Sky.

"Well, the backpack is a dead giveaway. But also, cause I ain't seen you in town or before until now. So, plannin' to enter the League?" asked the girl.

"That's the plan, at least. I've been dreaming of this day for quite a while. My parents are currently away doing some business, so I've stayed with my grandma for the past two years. And recently, I've decided to set out and begin my own Pokémon adventure."

"So you're fond of Pokémon, huh?" questioned Applejack.

"Yeah, who isn't."

"Can't argue with that, sugarcube. Sometimes I wish I could go on a journey of mah own. Gettin' a chance to see the world. As much as I love bein' on the farm with mah kin, sometimes I long for that chance to go on an adventure. But, my family comes first. And I couldn't burden them with that kind of responsibility."

"You really take your family to heart, huh. That's admirable of you," smiled Sky.

"Heh, you really tryin' to flirt with me, sugar," said Applejack.

"No, but I meant it. I've never met someone that close to their relatives. I thought I was close with my folks, but you take it to another level. That's why I admire your ambition."

"Thanks for that," smiled Applejack.

"Before I forget, I got a package for your grandma," said Sky as he reached into his backpack and pulled out the package. "Mind giving it to her when she gets home?"

"No problem. Say, why don't you join us for lunch? Think of it as sayin' thank you for helpin' mah little sister."

"I don't want to intrude or be a bother," said Sky.

"You're not. In fact, seein' as how you're a trainer. I reckon you got a Pokémon with you. Correct?" asked Applejack.

"Yeah."

"Well, then. Let's have a quick battle. I wanna see what you're made up, sugarcube. See if you got it takes to really go to the top."

"Well, I've never been one to back down from a challenge. You're on, cowgirl!" smirked Sky.

"Just a warnin', sugar. This ain't mah first rodeo," said Aj as she returned the gesture.

The farm girl led Sky out of the house and to the backyard. The pair stood apart as a field in between them would serve for their battle. The two teens glared at each other as the wind began to pick up, a few tumbleweeds rolling by.

"My first Pokémon battle. I'm already excited. Now, Turtwig! I choose you!" shouted Sky as he pulled out his Pokéball and tossed it.

"Twig!" shouted Turtwig as he appeared from inside the ball and landed in front of his trainer.

"A Turtwig, huh? Never thought I get to see one in person," said Applejack as she saw who was Sky's partner. "Now, Sandshrew! You're up!"

The farm girl threw a Pokéball, and out popped her selected Pokémon, which resembled an armadillo. It had a white belly and a yellow back. Its back resembled bricked pavement or walls. It has a short tail, four short legs, and a small head.

"A Sandshrew, nice," said Sky as he pulled out his Pokedex.

"Sandshrew, the Mouse Pokémon! Sandshrew often lives in the desert and other dry places, so it's accustomed to life with very little rainfall. It can move quickly by curling itself into a ball and rolling across the sand."

"It's a Ground-type. This means we got the advantage. This will be easy." said Sky to Turtwig.

"Twig!"

"Don't count yer chickens before they hatch!" proclaimed Applejack.

"Let's end this. Turtwig, Razor Leaf!" shouted Sky.

Turtwig heard the command of its master as it let out a cry and flicked its twig on its head. Out shot several rows of curved and sharp leaves heading towards Sandshrew.

"I told you, don't underestimate us. Time for you to find out. Sandshrew, use Dig!" commanded Applejack.

Sandshrew heard the girl's command as it began to burrow itself underneath the ground, leaving a hole behind.

"What?!!" shouted Sky as he was surprised by what his opponent did to dodge his attack.

"Twig?" said Turtwig as he didn't expect that and was now caught off-guard.

"I'm not just a dumb, blonde country gal as people might think. I got brains up here, sugar," smirked Applejack. "Now, Sandshrew!"

Turtwig felt the ground underneath it shake. Soon out popped Sandshrew with its claw raised as it did an uppercut on the small greenish Pokémon, who was scored with a direct hit.

"Twig!" shouted Turtwig as he was flung into the air and crashed onto the ground.

"Turtwig, are you alright?!" asked Sky to his partner.

"Twig," stated Turtwig as it returned to its feet and shook off the attack.

"Well, I'll be. It still wants to fight," said Aj as she saw that Turtwig wouldn't be defeated so easily.

"You got that right. Now Turtwig, use Tackle!"

The small creature took off as it zoomed toward the armadillo at lightning speed.

"Fast little thing. Sandshrew, Sand Attack!" shouted Applejack.

"Shrew!" shouted the armadillo as it began to use its tiny arms and toss sand into the air.

The sand was flung as it began to get in Turtwig's path. The small creature was starting to be blinded by the sandy material as it couldn't see where its target was.

"Turtwig!" shouted Sky.

"Now, use Scratch!"

Sandshrew then emerged from the sand as it bursts apart. It was in front of the Turtwig, who was again unprepared. The armadillo then had its arms out and swung its claws. It swung them both, leaving some marks on Turtwig, who was sent flying and crashed onto the ground.

"Turtwig, are you okay?" said Sky as he was concerned about how much punishment his partner was taking.

"Twig!" said the Pokémon as he managed to get back on its feet.

"Use Synthesis!" ordered Sky.

Turtwig looked up at the sky and sun. Its body began glowing greenish light as it absorbed the star's rays.

"So they think they can heal? We won't let you. Sandshrew, Dig!"

"Shrew!" shouted the Pokémon as it leaped into the air and burrowed under the dirt.

"Turtwig, watch out!"

Turtwig heard Sky's command as the ground underneath it rumbled. It didn't finish its healing process as it jumped out at the last second with Sandshrew coming out of the ground going for another uppercut, and missing its mark.

"Use Bite!" ordered the boy.

Turtwig then leaped with its jaws, ready to latch onto Sandshrew.

"Turn around!" shouted Applejack.

Sandshrew heard the cowgirl's orders as it did that. Soon Turtwig's mouth made contact with the outer layer of the armadillo's body as it made the small greenish creature feel pain. It sent a shock through its body as it was hurting from hitting the tough armor.

"Rapid Spin, go!" yelled Applejack.

Sandshrew quickly turned and curled into a ball as it spun several rotations, all in the blink of an eye. It picked up speed and was heading towards Turtwig, still feeling the pain.

"Turtwig, dodge it!" yelled Sky.

"Twig!" shouted the Pokémon as he managed to avoid the attack by leaping out of the way.

Sandshrew rolled past it but quickly changed direction while still curled up. It was now heading back to Turtwig, who saw the armadillo out of the corner of its eye as it made contact.

"Twig!" yelled out Turtwig in pain as he skidded along the dirt.

"Turtwig!" shouted Sky as it pained him to see his partner being tossed around.

"Shrew," spoke Sandshrew as it unfurled in front of Applejack.

The cowgirl held her position while waiting for the dirt cloud to disburse. Soon it did, as there was Turtwig who was leaned up against one of the fence posts. Its whole body was covered in scuffs from all the damage it took, yet it still wanted to fight. For Applejack, she was shocked and impressed by the will of the small Pokémon as it wanted to keep fighting.

"Turtwig, can you keep going?" asked Sky as he didn't want to put his partner through more punishment or risk its health.

"Twig!" shouted the green creature as it told its master that it could keep going.

"That little thing is tougher than a house of bricks," said Applejack to Sandshrew.

"Shrew," said the armadillo as it too was impressed by Turtwig's courage.

"Turtwig, Razor Leaf!"

"Use Dig!"

Applejack gave Sandshrew its orders as it burrowed into the dirt again, making Turtwig's Razor Leaf miss the mark.

"Turtwig, don't let Sandshrew pinpoint your location. Start running!" ordered Sky.

Turtwig responded as it began to run despite all the damage it had taken. The small creature was zipping in and out and changing lanes, all trying to confuse Sandshrew from locating where it was.

"That won't work," snickered Applejack. "Come on out!"

"Stop!" shouted Sky.

Turtwig hit the brakes immediately upon Sky's command. It skidded and came to a halt just inches from Sandshrew popping out. It pinpointed where the small creature was despite all the running on the surface and looked to strike, but Turtwig managed to fake the Pokémon out.

"Nice! Now, use Tackle!" shouted Sky.

"Twig!" shouted Turtwig as it leaped into the air with a headbutt.

Sandshrew saw the attack and tried to turn but was slow as Turtwig made contact with its side. The attack sent the armadillo to the floor as it skidded for a few meters in front of Applejack.

"Sandshrew!" said Aj as she was concerned.

"Shrew!" said the armadillo as it got back up.

While the attack may have hit, the few armor plates on its side helped to minimize the damage it took from Turtwig's attack as it got back up.

"Nice hit, bud," said Sky to his partner.

"Twig," nodded Turtwig while looking at its opponent.

"So you finally got a hit in? Not bad, but it was merely a scratch. And no doubt, Turtwig is runnin' on fumes. One more attack, and it's all over." stated Applejack.

Unfortunately, she's right. Applejack has been able to counter me and Turtwig's moves perfectly. And Sandshrew is tough to hit, even with its armor. If only there was a weak spot. Somewhere that's effective and has no... cover... That's it!

At that moment, Sky now had a plan on how to not only land an effective move again Sandshrew but also potentially win the battle. The teen looked at his partner as Turtwig did the same. He didn't say a word as the Pokémon saw that its trainer had a plan. And right now, he was willing to trust Sky to lead them to victory.

"Time for this battle to end," stated Applejack.

"I agree, cowgirl. Turtwig, run and use Razor Leaf!" ordered Sky.

"Twig!" shouted Turtwig as the small Pokémon began running. It flicked its head as its attack was heading toward its opponent.

"This again? Fine, we'll do the same thing as before. Sandshrew, use Sand Attack!" ordered Applejack.

"Turtwig, keep on using Razor Leaf!"

"You really expect to be a Pokémon trainer with moves like that?" said Applejack as she couldn't believe what Sky was doing.

Sandshrew was flinging sand into the air as Turtwig kept pushing forward. It was still charging ahead while continuing its Razor Leaf attack. The two attacks met as the sand was being held in place and took the shape of a wall while the leaves bounced off it. The tiny leaves began to fall back and gather up as they were starting to create a veil over Turtwig that Applejack was starting to lose sight of the Pokémon.

"Now, Turtwig, like we practiced, do a revolving jump!" ordered Sky.

What is he doing?

Applejack was confused about the command that Sky gave Turtwig. She then realized the boy was looking to get behind Sandshrew and attack its blind spot.

"I'm onto yer plan! Sandshrew, jump and use Scratch!" shouted Applejack as he was hoping to intercept Turtwig in the air before the Pokémon could leap over them and attack.

Sandshrew stopped its attack, and it leaped into the air. The armadillo burst through the sand wall with its claws, ready to strike. It sliced through the veil of leaves, hoping to either hit Turtwig in the air or see where he was spinning. But to both Applejack and Sandshrew's attention, the small greenish Pokémon wasn't in the air. On the ground was a small object spinning as it stopped and was revealed to be Turtwig. It was now positioned right below Sandshrew as it had a clear shot at its stomach.

"Nice one, bud. Now, Razor Leaf!" shouted Sky with a smile.

"No!" shouted Applejack as she realized she'd been tricked.

Turtwig flung its attack with all of its might and power. The Razor Leaf hit Sandshrew directly in the stomach as the armadillo felt the attack based on the pain expression shown on its face. The attack continued as it pushed the Pokémon into the air and soon ceased as Sandshrew came crashing down to the ground.

"Sandshrew!" shouted Applejack as her Pokémon was covered in scuffs.

"Now finish it with Tackle!" ordered Sky.

Sandshrew was barely getting to its feet as the attack from Razor Leaf was super effective, especially since it was the part of its body that wasn't protected. It opened one eye as coming at it was Turtwig, who jumped and bashed its head into Sandshrew. The armadillo didn't have time to react as its head turned from the impact of the headbutt it received from the tiny creature as it hit the ground. Applejack was left stunned when she saw her Pokémon on the ground with swirls for its eyes. That clear sign meant that the victors were Turtwig and Sky.

"Sandshrew!" called out Applejack, hoping to get a response.

"Shrew," was all the armadillo said in a weak tone.

Applejack fell to her knees as she processed what had happened. On the other side, both Sky and Turtwig were panting hard. Both expected Sandshrew to get back up and continue to fight. But after a few moments passed, and the Pokémon wasn't stirring, it dawned on Sky what it meant.

"We did it," muttered the boy softly. "We did it!"

"Twig?" said Turtwig as he looked at his trainer.

"We won. We won our first battle!" stated Sky, telling his partner of their huge accomplishment.

"Twig,"

"We did it, Turtwig!" shouted the boy as Turtwig began to cheer.

The teen bent down as Turtwig ran to him and jumped into his arms. The boy hugged his partner and gave him a pat on the back when suddenly, the small Pokémon bit his head.

"Ow, what the hell, Turtwig?!" shouted Sky as he felt some pain when his partner bit him.

"Twig," said Turtwig muffled as he was shaken by Sky, trying to get the Pokémon off his head and stop the pain.

From afar, Applejack was checking up on Sandshrew, who finally gained consciousness. The armadillo looked at the cowgirl as it had a sad look.

"Shrew," said the Pokémon as he blamed himself for their defeat.

"You did great, sugar. Don't beat yourself up," said Applejack, praising the Pokémon for its hard work.

"Shrew," said Sandshrew as it was glad to know that Aj wasn't mad and licked her face.

The country girl giggled upon being licked by the armadillo as she looked at Sky. The boy struggled to get Turtwig off his head as Applejack examined the two. The way Sky was able to come up with an ingenious plan to expose their weak spot and capitalize on it with such precision and skill made the girl come to respect the boy even more. For someone who was just barely starting their Pokémon journey, the farm girl could see that Sky and Turtwig were a well-oiled team. And maybe, he could become one of the greatest trainers to exist.

From afar, a person had been walking by and saw the whole battle from start to finish. While they were impressed by Sky's victory, their entire focus was on Applejack and how she acted during the battle. If anything, it showed the person what they already knew.

"Good match," said Sky as he walked over to Applejack and Sandshrew as he managed to finally get Turtwig off his head.

"Thanks. You're one tough cowboy, sugar," said Aj as the two teens looked at each other.

"Applejack! Granny Smith is back!" shouted Applebloom.

"Seems mah grandma is back. "You still want to join us for lunch?" asked Aj.

"Hell yeah. After that intense battle, I'm hungry," stated Sky as he accepted the country gal's offer.

The pair returned to the house with both Pokémon accompanying them. They stepped through the door as in the dining room was Applebloom. But there were also two other people present. One of them had moderate sap green eyes like Aj. His hair was brilliant orange, and his skin was brilliant orange. The last person was an older woman with light, brilliantly orange eyes. Her hair was light gray, and her skin was light lime green and wrinkling.

"Hey, Granny. You're back?" said Applejack.

"Yes, siree. And I see we have a guest."

"Sky, this here is the rest of mah kin. Big Macintosh and Granny Smith."

"Hey," said the boy as he waved at Aj's other family members.

Applejack was with Applebloom washing the dishes. Meanwhile, Sky was helping Granny Smith to clean up the table as a way to say thanks for letting him join them for lunch.

"Thanks for all yer help, sonny."

"No problem, ma'am. My folks told me that everybody has to do their part. Speaking of which, I've got a package for you from my grandma." said Sky as he reached into his backpack and gave the package to the elderly woman.

"Well, it seems Daisy finally remembered after all these years," said Granny Smith as she took the package from the teen.

"What is it?" asked Sky.

"Don't you worry about it, sonny. You should get along if you want to make it to town before night falls. Feel free to take some snacks with you." said Granny Smith.

"You sure?" asked Sky.

"Positive," responded Granny Smith.

"Thanks."

"Before you leave, though, I want to inform you about something."

"Sure?" said Sky as he was confused about what the elderly woman was asking of him.

Granny Smith entered the kitchen as Aj and Applebloom finished the final dishes.

"We're just about done, Granny," said Applebloom.

"Applebloom, do you mind? I need to speak with your big sis about something," asked Granny Smith.

"Sure," said Applebloom as she began to walk away.

"What is it, Granny?" asked Applejack as she scrubbed some plates.

"You know," said Granny as that was all she said.

"Is she coming out or what?" said Sky as he was outside the house.

The boy was looking up based on the sun's position; if he didn't start making his way in the direction of the town, he would be caught trekking through the woods in the dark. Soon the sound of the door opening was heard. The teen turned as out came Applebloom, Big Mac, and Granny Smith. The boy was expecting the older woman to say something as she had a backpack in her hands. Instead, she stepped to the side, and there was Aj. Sky didn't understand what was going on as Granny Smith handed the bag to Aj, who put it on.

"Remember."

"Yes, Granny," said Applejack.

The girl then hugged her grandma as it was one she was going to miss. Aj then received a hug from her big brother as he couldn't help but shed a few tears. The last one was Applebloom, as she was the one who would miss her sister the most. Aj told Applebloom to keep her head up and to remain strong. Also, the fact that she wasn't going to be gone forever. With her final goodbyes in place, Aj strolled down the porch and made her way toward Sky.

"Uhm, what are you doing?" asked the boy.

"Well, turns out, I'm taggin' along," answered Applejack.

The girl then remembered her conversation with Granny Smith after Applebloom left.

(Flashback)

"I saw you battlin'," said Granny Smith to her granddaughter.

"I was merely treating him to a battle as thanks for helping Applebloom with her chores. Plus, I kind of invited him for lunch before you arrived."

"So it seems, but I was talkin' more about you. The way yer face lit up when you battlin' against him. I've never seen that look in yer eyes than when you first told yer folks that you wanted to go on an adventure when you were older." said Granny Smith.

"I was a little kid, Granny. I've grown since then. I've realized that hard work and family are way more important than some silly dreams that will never become a reality. Besides, the farm is the most important thing we have. It's been in our family for generations." said Applejack.

"Yes, family is what keeps us together. But family also supports one another. Even their dreams."

"Granny..."

"Applejack, this is yer chance to make yer dreams come true. Don't worry about the farm or us. We'll be fine. If there's one thing I've learned throughout mah years of livin', it's to have no regrets when yer time comes."

"But..." said Aj while looking at her grandma.

"Ask yourself and look into yer heart; are you gonna throw away yer shot?"

(End of Flashback)

"Wow," said Sky as he heard Aj finish telling her tale.

"You don't mind a girl taggin' along, do you, sugarcube?" said Applejack with a smile.

"Not at all. The more, the merrier," responded Sky. "Just wonderin', is it a good idea to take Sandshrew away from the farm?"

"Oh, don't worry. I was just usin' him to battle you. I got mah own partner, right here," said Aj as she pulled out a Pokéball and spun it on her finger. The girl also revealed extra empty Pokéballs on her belt that were given to her by Granny Smith.

"So, mind tellin' me what Pokémon is in there?" asked Sky.

"Well, that's a secret. One that you'll see when I'm ready." snickered Aj with a smug smile.

"Well, better get goin'. We still got to get to town before nightfall."

"Then let's get walkin'," said Applejack as she looked back at her family.

They were smiling at Applejack as they were pleased to know that she would live her dream and go on a journey. The cowgirl knew that this was what they wanted for her, and she wouldn't let them down. She tipped her hat and then walked along with Sky. The pair waved goodbye, as did the rest of Aj's family.

Take good care of my granddaughter, Sky. Keep her safe. Applejack, don't worry, we'll be fine. Go live your dream.

As the entire Apple family was seeing Aj off, the girl couldn't help but shed a tear. The girl knew that going on this journey would be away from her family for quite a while. In fact, by going on this adventure, she would be separated from her folks for the longest. Still, they were willing to support her dream. And that only meant she wasn't going to turn back now. So with determination in her mind and heart, the girl was going to make the most out of this opportunity. Besides, with Sky by her side, the girl was looking forward to this. The two teens walked until Sweet Apple Acres was out of view as they ventured into the forest as the town lay in the distance.
