An Aileron is a part of the main wing of a aircraft that controls the pitch/roll of the craft, these are what allows a craft to do barrel rolls and go sideways

well, i do like these aerospace-themed pony names! and things are definitely serious when Princess Twilight is getting involved
Princesses addressing their subjects as "my little ponies" never gets old! and it's certainly quite the crew of misfits being assembled for this world-saving mission. very cinematic!
the reference to Jeremy Clarkson and Travis and Lukowitz having very distinctly non-pony names did make me double-take, and go back to check if this was some sort of hybrid world where modern humans and ponies existed side-by-side
can't have a scene of a crew of misfits blasting into space without one of the non-astronauts passing out from the gees. and that's certainly a cliffhanger!
ah, the classic ponies with guns problem! and there's nothing wrong with using the same solution as another fic's. there aren't too many ways to make it work, after all
tying in the top-secret space monsters to what really happened with Luna and Nightmare Moon is a great way to make this a part of MLP lore. thanks for writing!
