This might make sense. But I think that you would have a hard time convincing ponies to eat a formerly-stone delicacy, even if you knew logically (as Twilight may) that it were perfectly safe.
And, yes... I'm sure they would eventually have to figure out a system. But if anything, wouldn't it make Princess Twilight's birthday that much grander of an event if they kept the tradition of placing all the candles on the cake each year, the cakes getting bigger, the flames getting higher and hotter... it'd be an honor to be the one to get to light the candles on her birthday cake! Though, Twilight probably wouldn't be totally comfortable with such a big holiday being centered around her.
