I really wanted to sorta capture how Fatalis was built up in legend to be this unbeatable visage of destruction, the true God among monsters, even though it lost an eye it's power went unphased from start to finish. FYI, I maaaay have another two-shot planned for the holidays, something a little less grim and closer to Indomitable's timeline.

I am also a Hunter of the Research Commission, and... I have not succeeded in facing this thing. We cannot call it a monster, it is Death. I didn't even save the game before quitting. Nobody should face that thing alone, even once. That is torture. And your retelling is... harrowing. I spent the whole time trying to survive, and do enough damage to call for help, and I didn't make it. Couldn't. Ran down the clock and I couldn't scratch it, spent most of that time trying to dodge attacks. How can anyone fight Fatalis without Fatalis equipment?!

Fatalis is, in the Monster Hunter universe, the equivalent of a deity. It single-handedly wiped out Castle Schrade in a single night, and supposedly wiped out the civilisations we see as ruins. In Iceborne, they fully sell what a Black Dragon is; Death. Alatreon is the prelude to how close to perfect you need to be, not just as a team but to carry your own weight against Fatalis.
My retelling takes what I've learned of Fatalis' history and what little lore there is; to this kingdom, like Schrade, this wasn't a battle they could win, and I'm happy to have sold that feeling well as everyone poured their souls into attempting to defeat the Black Dragon.
But, it took my own team and I dozens of attempts with Alatreon gear to boot before toppling Fatalis, but I can confidently say you'll prevail someday, stay strong, Hunter.
