I like this story, keep up the good work!
Well that was pretty metal. Personally I try to make a point of never eating anything capable of begging for its life.
is this by chance 'future somnambula?
10912147
Whe is she going to get some books?
Maybe next time cook him alive?
A Library of .....
I don't think a library was invented yet as a word for library as we know it, so maybe they will name the city The Library, first of it's kind, etc but as a whole city.
Like in our history Imperial Library of Constantinople
I like this idea. Like, if someone tries to cheat after the riddle starts the sphinx gets a power boost or something.
Nice chapter, good work.
I don’t get the beggar riddle.
10919337
It was "A" beggar, gender neutral term. This beggar had a brother who died, which means the brother is male (heh). The dead brother did not have a brother when he was alive, making the beggar female.
Excellent work keep it up
10919357
Is it sad it still took me a sec to understand cause I thought the he in the last sentence of the riddle was still talking about the beggar?
Can the town be Thebes? Later known as Seven Gated Thebes because they need to have gates that don't involve going past a sphinx?
"Oh, well he's going to die."
It would have been more interesting to play against expectation. Remember that your protagonist is not a hero. It's all too convenient to have her doing heroic things by chance.
Also waiting for somebody smart enough to decline the riddle and walk a couple hundred feet to the side to go around her.
10919361
Nah, you have to twist your thought process to figure out riddles. That's the whole idea of them. Not having the thought process of solving riddles doesn't mean you're stupid or anything, it just means that you don't think the right way for them to be clear to you. Which is totally okay.
The Library of Ashurbanipal
Or some other ancient library. I found 8 of them, wonder how you can pony pun them.
10919323
Have to wait for the chapter for that, but there will be books...
10919325
There are some libraries in this world, but they are at the moment semi-rare, like one or two in major cities, some private. Even just books were once worth their weight in gold in real-life once.
10919326
Was actually planning something like that. More info given in future chapter...
10919439
Thank you for giving some good ideas
I generally don't like Displaced stories, as they get a little too power fantasy for my taste, but this one is interesting so far. I look forward to seeing where it goes as the premise is pretty cool.
An old mining town? Shouldnt take more than a couple decades for someone desperate enough to personally drill a tunnel through the mountain base?
Definitely a magical creature, just image what that slavers been eating.
Ah out feathery, furred gal has found he rhomr at last
10919439
I actually liked it. She fooled him hard and gave the griffons a chance to escape, but it was implied that if they didn't leave quick enough they could suffer the same fate. just because you're not necessarily 'good' doesn't mean you can't play favorites, after all
No me esperaba que se lo comiera vivo, eso fue un poco gore 😋
Me hubiera gustado que se lo hubiera tragado vivo para que muriera por los ácidos estomacales 🤯
The beggar is female.
The first statement says that the beggar had a brother,
the second statement tells us that said brother didn't have a male sibling.
Everything else is meant to confuse the one listening to the riddle into mixing up the beggar with the brother and the time limit was something Hena added on to not let the zebra become calm enough to realize this.
That's my take on it at least
Oh I know this one, did it again just last week after all
The answer is "Corn"
I take it you're not gonna use this riddle:
"I have a head like a cat. I have feet like a cat. But I am dumber than a cat."
Seeing as it's really more of a personal opinion than a riddle and there most likely aren't any Charr in this world
Didn't know you could answer with chicken on that riddle I've always used the other one... good to know
That's probably accurate.
It's likely that in most cases she's normally only a little stronger than she appears, but when she's guarding something and the one trying to get past her either fails the riddle or try to force their way past she becomes much more powerful in response
Well that should be interesting
10920034
Same here. And yeah, the other riddle would not make that much sense in the setting. There's also other riddle in the same instance, depending what you chose.
"I'm half as smart and twice as strong. I've got a kick you won't forget." Answer; Centaur, might be thought offensive perhaps...
I'm indeed planning something along those lines; mess with the Sphinx, she'll mess you up bad, or something equally clever wording. Planning on giving her so called choice-policy of "Toll, Riddle or Combat?", borrowed from a episode of cartoon I once watched and still can be found.
"Still... " Oh what wonderous horror it will be, when the guild will crash down on her after it drops.
On an other note, how do you determine who wins or lose? Do you role a d20 on Wisdom, like in good D&D manners? And two times more to see if they have something to trade for their lifes and if their persuation check is high enough?
After all the D&D life isn't fair, but a role of the dice.
10920072
Yeees... And then there's the fear of when it it drops.... Middle of a battle or when meeting someone or something other bad time...
And as for the riddle answering in D&D, apparently it varies. Some give solvable one and some let players roll knowledge-of something that might be connected to it, like history, arcane etc... and then are given the answer. And yeah, sometimes it just comes down to dice-rolls...
10920086
You forgot, Hena is a player, as it's her story. The rest, so far, are all NPC and therefore mere slaves to the dice.
What I'm saying is that it should be theoretically possible for an innocent foal to foolishly agree to a riddle and find its end, or that Tirek himself could get past her without any harm.
You have chosen the D&D path and now have to follow it. Only bad DMs fudge the dice.
10920086
Hey, will Hena ever meet The MLP Sphinx? I have a feeling it would be funny if it caused them to see each other as rivals because of how different they do things? Then again, The MLP Sphinx might see Hena as a big sister instead.
so has anyone noticed no one noticed that Hana only counted to 10 before attacking the slaver? Even though earlier she said 20
So this is probably maybe before the Princess's time as rulers of ALL of equestria as Starswhirl was mentioned, so good time frame. Ponys working together so after Unification Era...
and now they are making an old Mine town into a Neutral place of learning (please don't name if after the Library of Alexandria >.<) so many geeks, nerds, and bookworms will be coming by in the years! so many creatures that believe themselves to be smart, or at least, whish to learn if nothing else should be some fun times..just so long as they don't pester their neighborly Sphinx
Gonna be honest, I'd have answered 'fish' to the second riddle.
Because us Hoomon peel off the scales, then gut the fish.
Thus, Inside-outside and outside-inside.
I could even have argued that it's true, because she said 'you'.
10920314
The dumbass Stripeass changed it to ten due to suicidal overconfidence.
S at of knowledge huh? How fitting
10920034
You could also answer with Fish.
You remove the scales, cook and eat the flesh then throw away the bones.
I read the riddle, the answer but i dont understand it. Even the comment section explaining it is still not ringing any bells. Is that a english thing?
A trick question? I dont get it at all...
Riddle me this. When is the next chapter?
10921679
Already started writing when writing this, finished when its ready.
10921471
"Inside outside"-one? Simply put in chicken one; you pluck away the feathers and cook the revealed meat, then you eat the meat and throw away the bones. Pretty similar with corn; peel away the leaves covering it, cook it, eat the yellow stuff and throw away the remaining core.
10921698 ok
10921701
I mean the one getting the Zebra eaten. Im german so i perhaps lack the common sence for it?
10922924
Ah, 'The Beggar'. Its basically confusing wordplay, and beggar being gender-neutral term. Can't quite explain it any better than earlier comments.
10922931
Ok thanks
Fish.
The word fish is also a plural, like sheep. Fishes is only ever used in the scientific context to refer to multiple species of fish, and even then is somewhat rare as it is very USA-specific grammar and not really seen outside it.
I love the story so far, good luck on the rest.
What’s this a crossover with?
10919439
"Also waiting for somebody smart enough to decline the riddle and walk a couple hundred feet to the side to go around her."
One traveller: "Does she see us?"
Her: *shouting through a megaphone* "I CAN STILL SEE YOU!"
Another traveller: "Two hundred yards more, then."
Riddle me this Batmare, err, ponyman, ummm.... Riddle me this....
10924732
It seems to be a crossover with mlp, D&D 5e and mythology.
only 2 things good for a slaver
DEATH
&
Misery
May I suggest Athens, because it's At Hena's place? :P
Then the Sphinx counts to ten. Not twenty. Jerkface or not the zebra got gipped on his time limit.
